Read a few posts above for Galor chat, but the Risian Corvette is still pretty baller in most situations. Fedside, most of the really good traits are locked behind Z Store T6 ships, and many of those T6 ships will be a better choice to fly at the moment. If you can get a free ride to 60 that will alleviate a ton of grind, but you'll still have to worry about spec points, dil grinding, etc if you want to max everything out.

If you don't want to max everything out, and just want to shoot lasers at spaceships and play through cryptic's generally horrible but kind of charming Iconian war story, then fly whatever the hell you want and press buttan. PvP is still dead, so there's not a lot of reason to actually go full sperg with the game anymore.

Okay but like ... which are the traits to look out for? 3000 zen per ship is a nightmare grind already, and I'd rather not waste that on something I don't actually need.

I liked doing the rainbow beam boat Corvette at full speed thing. I would like to keep doing that.

Honestly you can get by without any of these ship traits, but if you have zen/dilithium to piss away...

Phantom - Reciprocity: Reduces cooldowns on Intel and Tac powers whenever you dodge and attack. Depends on having aggro, but makes certain low-tac-slot ships more viable than they would be without hundreds of millions worth of attack pattern doffs.
Arbiter - Weapon System Efficiency: Quicker-firing energy weapons that take less weapon power to fire while EPTW is active. You should always have EPTW active. Basically a straight and sizable damage buff.
Presidio - All Hands on Deck: Reduces the cooldowns of science and captain powers whenever you use a tactical power, with a short delay between activations. Absurdly good for tac captains due to the shorter APA cooldown, and good for everyone due to every ship using tac powers constantly.
Icarus - Subwarp Sheath: Bonus armor penetration depending on how fast you're going.
Astika - Supremacy: Bonus power levels while FAW or CSV are active. Not quite a replacement for plasleech, but close enough. Also stacks with it to basically max out every power level while both are up. Lockbox ship though.

There's also Pedal to the Metal (bonus damage at max speed) from the Pilot spec, which is basically free and there's no reason not to rush for it on a beamboat.

^^ Yeah, earlier this evening Pulse was giving lots of money to anyone in chat complaining about being space poor. Obviously, the devs told him the game is dying and he's trying to give some happiness to the hoi polloi before it goes.

Psycho Landlord posted:

Yeah, seriously, some real bad advice about those Jem ships up in here. The Jem Dread is one of the best vanilla Carrier classes in the game currently, even at T-5U, and has access to the other side of the "best hangar pets" argument - ramming speed is a monster on those things.

The Recon ship is strictly inferior to the Strike Ship (You can just ignore the Command seats, you aren't obligated to use them you know) and remains one of the greatest DPS machines in the game. The Escort Carrier is merely serviceable, so yeah, sell that or use it to piss pubbies off. Or use it for the Admiralty system.
<snip>
Course, it doesn't help that most of the advice you got in here came from people who never play this game anymore but continue to bitch constantly in this thread for some unfathomable reason.
My original char runs a Jem dread with bugship pets, and I still play. I'm speaking from experience here - the jhdc is a good ship, but it wasn't the greatest thing out there even before T6 ships dropped, and nothing since then has drastically improved it.

But this is a dumb thing to argue about, especially when giving advice to a new player. I think the best advice has already been given - sell the jhec, run either the jhdc or bugship based on what you like to fly, use the EC from the jhec to buy some essentials.

Anyone who says anything bad about the JHDC is a liar and likely a communist, don't listen to them. It's a loving monster with bugship pets, and the scramble fighters trait makes it just bonkers. Because the only thing better than a ship with tons of hull and four badass frigates is a ship with tons of hull and four invulnerable badass frigates. I could just park next to the crystalline entity and be all 'ha ha, get hosed' when it would do its explosion, promptly doing zero damage to the ship or the pets while the bugships continuously unloaded into it. The carrier itself is only decent; a 4/3 layout with four tac consoles isn't really a combat god and it turns like a dead yak, so just cover it in beams and FAW at anything that comes close while your bugships eat everything around you and you'll do great. Just keep an eye on the health of the pets and don't let them get too low unless you want them to ram something, because once they're under half hull they're liable to kamikaze into somebody.

If you're chasing after the absolutely highest possible DPS, antiprotons are the best because the antiproton effect is just another [CrtD] modifier. But unless you have some kind of bizarre disease which can only be cured by getting top 10 in the ISA DPS leaderboards, you don't need to care about that. Pick a color that you like and get those. If you pick a craftable color, you can get donations from people in chat. Assuming anyone's on and they're logged on with their crafters instead of levelling up alts during the XP week. At least the population in channel should pick up starting tomorrow for a little while.

Seriously, don't waste money on exchange weapons right now. Normally you can level just fine with whatever drops/mission rewards you pick up. Right now with the XP bonus you level so fast that it doesn't quite work, but that's still no reason to hit the exchange for weapons.

I logged in today to see how STO is these days. I had a rather large amount of zen thanks to the lifetime sub thing so I bought the dreadnaught 3 pack and a bunch of keys while they're 15% down (those things are still good for selling/trade right?). I was looking at the T6 siege destroyer to replace my T5-U fleet scourge but I'm not sure it's really much better. Then again, all my gear is mk 12 so the ship probably doesn't make much difference.
I used the free L60 token on the char that has a Recluse (upgraded I think), is that still going to be remotely useful?

I wouldn't blow the spacebux on the scramble fighter trait for anything less than a full carrier. Normal fighters pop almost instantly when attacked, there's almost no window in which to see them taking damage, think 'oh gently caress, better push butan', and trigger the trait. It's really only beneficial to ships that have frigate pets.
