Ah, the fifties, when tobacco industries could say whatever bullshit they wanted without anyone calling them on it, and when DDT was sprayed everywhere, even on sidewalks where children happened to be playing. Honestly poo poo isn't all that better for tobacco these days, but that might be because my definition of "better" would have big tobacco execs on trail before the Hauge.

I think a bigger problem than participation trophies is that kids are pretty keen on the fact that nobody gives poo poo about their non-sports trophies. My math olympiad medals from 5th grade didn't mean poo poo to me, or were actively embarrassing. Maybe it's changed since the 90s but back then kids were not generally proud of their academic achievements, be it in math competitions or science fairs or whatever. I do, however, still have my 20 year old math olympiad t-shirt and it is stylishly tight and chic these days. It's easy to forget, as an adult with no kids, how important sports are to boys' socialization, and how ruinous being bad at them can be. If you wanted to find something all mass shooters have in common, I bet sucking at sports is one.

Oh hey I got one today:quote:This is too funny! "People in the U.P., in general, have a warped sense of humor. This is a highway near Ishpeming, MI. A deer was hit there. The couch was dumped there previously. Day two the deer was on the couch. Day three the end table and lamp showed up. Day four the TV and TV stand showed up. The County Sheriff had to call MI DOT because of all the people stopping to take pictures. The cardboard caption in front of the deer on the couch reads, "Sorry Hunters. Obama ruined health care. We can't afford to have injured hunters on our conscience, so I'm staying home! Sorry, the Deer."

That thing deserves an award for being so unfunny that it makes other things that would be funny boring. I have to keep scrolling to look at it because, in the absence of evidence to the contrary, my brain refuses to accept anything could be so utterly antithetical to humor and I'm forced to conclude that I somehow imagined it. It was mildly amusing right up to the point where the cardboard sign exists. Like the "get well soon" balloon in a dead raccoon's hand. But... gotta put politics into it. Edit: From a few pages back, but I had this show up in my feed. Did you notice that if you look carefully you can see an erased answer? And that erased answer looks even more like something that would get a -1 point for getting the correct answer, but showing your work wrong? How much do you want to bet, little Jimmy wrote "No because 75 is not close to 68 or 73" and then had mom change it to score some political points. Considering the size and ferocity of the far-right movement in this country, I wonder why we're not getting stories of all the people who are dying and getting terrible healthcare as a direct result of Obamacare. Whatever could be the reason... (Seriously though, I'm confused, because wouldn't you think they would at least make some up?)

You should probably point out that troops make well over 15 an hour when you factor in things like the fantastic healthcare we get, if you live on base (as a single Airman) your housing is paid for and your food is paid for and if you move off base you get extra money for food and housing. I make $13 an hour right now and my paychecks here are still smaller then when I was active duty and living off base.

You don't discipline a loving seventh month old. But they asked because another prospective girl had said "a smack on the hand." Seriously timeouts worked with all four of the kids I helped raise. I agree that no one who is not risking their lives or contributing to the greater well-being of the country should receive the same pay as our men and women overseas. That's why I support a massive redistribution of the wealth of the parasitic capitalist class.

There's also probably correlations between education/income of parents and use of corporal punishment that make it hard to separate contributing factors

^^^also, does military not have COL adjustments? Yeah, as someone who worked multiple crappy retail jobs, lol at thinking someplace like that would ever give you overtime (or even 40 hours) unless the world was ending. You could be the only dude in the store but if they realize they're going to have to pay you OT they will kick your rear end out at exactly 40hrs. Also having a steady paycheck like you would get from a military job. The two best things about finally getting a real job was a set schedule so I could actually plan something more than a week or two in advance and a steady paycheck. Those things make such a huge difference. Scruff McGruff fucked around with this message at 01:56 on Oct 27, 2015 |
