I don't understand liberals that like Bill Maher. You know, there was a kind of dumb article on a feminist website about the rise of the "brogressive", which I mostly disagreed with largely because it's always been a thing, not a new phenomena. and Maher is the avatar of it. He's a misogynist that peddles Islamophobia and bravely fights against political correctness, for gently caress's sake. Maher is nominally on the left on a significant number of issues, but it's a kind of left that doesn't have any room for people that aren't white men. Maher's prime fans are the kind of atheist that buy into BIOTRUTHS. gently caress all of them and gently caress bill maher.

Yeah, Maher is basically a mean cheerleader and he can be genuinely funny when he's on point. I also still give him some credit for being willing to say genuinely unpopular things he honestly believed to be true. I do think Maher is genuinely acting in pursuit of the truth as he sees it and is not just a raw naked partisan, which sets him apart from most right wing pundits.

Of course he also says a lot of horribly reprehensible poo poo, especially about Muslims and women. For me he's like the cigar of comedians: horribly bad for you but nevertheless sometimes fun.

This is a a page back, but you are lucky. My sex-ed in the glorious state of Kansas literally told me not to use condoms because they don't work. Seriously. They were like "Don't trust condoms! They have a failure rate over 50% for teenagers because teenagers don't know how to use them!" Then they refused to teach us how to use them. Looking back it was loving amazing.

Oh we got this too. A wonderful lecture on "The only way to prevent pregnancy is abstinence before marriage!" :downs: and talking about promises to God to remain pure and blah blah blah

No one explained contraception in any detail or taught anyone how to use a condom.

A fundie friend of mine (the one I always talk about--'fossils are a devil's trick,' etc) has three kids and basically said that he advocates abstinence-only sex ed because teaching contraception makes you complicit in your children sinning, and shelters them from the righteous consequences of their sin. The less they know, the less culpable you are for their mistakes. It's a profoundly hosed up worldview that is actively harming our children. Not that the religious right gives two actual shits about that.

I guess I got lucky. We had sex ed in 6th and 8th grade and they went over all the different forms of birth control, the potential risks, and all the relevant physiology. We also watched the live birth video. Both teachers I had definitely made sure to stress that the only 100% effective form of birth control was to not have sex but there wasn't any religious or YOUR DICK WILL FALL OFF AND YOUR SOUL WILL BE EMPTY nonsense. AFAIK nobody got pregnant until college.

This was in a suburb of NYC in the early 2000's.

I can't remember why I'm mad at you...

In my rural central-Ohio Catholic elementary school in the mid-80s I had a killer human biology/sex-ed class in fifth grade. A younger couple (who were friends of my parents) came in to teach it. He was a biology/animal husbandry professor at the OSU Ag School in town, and she was a nurse. The brought in tons of materials, huge posters, and a box of colored chalk. By the end of the week we knew everything about how babies are made with full color pictures. We were a little young for contraception, so we basically learned the nuts and bolts of reproduction. It was really cool. That, combined with the fact that my mother was a nurse and always very frank with us, gave me a pretty good base in sex-ed.
