They're both good devices and will treat you fine. The iPhone will probably outlast the Samsung in terms of support, which sounds like it might be important to you.

So I think my HTC One M7 finally ate it yesterday. It died and won't even begin to charge, no matter what outlet and charger I use. It's been a good phone but I think its time is up.

I talked to a Verizon rep last night and I've got three upgrades available on the account so I guess their whole lineup is available to me. I've been thinking about making the switch over to an iPhone for a while, having been on Android for so long though has me confused though. My original plan was to hold out until the S7/iPhone 7 or even the M10 comes out but that no longer seems to be an option, so now I guess I'm pretty stuck between the 6S and the S6.

I don't root my phone, I don't download a ton of apps, I don't take lots of pictures or video. Mainly what I use it for is web browsing, looking at Facebook, maybe every now and then a game or something, but that's rare. Call, text, web browsing, social media. If I'm making a trip, I'll use maps as well. I'll watch YouTube and stream music at work from time to time as well.

For how I use the device, is there a big difference in which one I select? I kinda want to try becoming an iPerson, but I'm unsure. A friend of mine got the S6 last night and it seems pretty wicked, but like the iPhone, this would be my first Samsung device too.

If you can handle the size I'd recommend the Note 5 and the + over the smaller Samsung and iPhone variants. Other than that can't really go wrong with either choice.

There are lots of cool new phones coming out recently and I was trying to save up to get a Moto X Pure Edition with all the trimmings (bigggest hard drive, protection plan, etc) but I'm not so sure about my decision now.

The OnePlus 2 looks interesting, the Droid Turbo 2 seems nice as well, but I was hoping to try Ting and the turbo is verizon only, also it has bloatware. There are so many phones coming out right now in the ~<$600 price range that I'm totally at a loss for what to go with. I'm really not a fan of anything I can't uninstall on the phone, small hard drive and/or no expandable storage, and I'd like a good camera, but other than that I have no strong opinions. I really don't know poo poo about android phones, besides the fact that my Gen1 Moto G was great when I got it, great enough to buy another one to replace my first when I broke the screen, but is no longer cutting the mustard in any regard.

I don't know how to do this, so I'm thinking about getting a small flip burner phone to use on a prepaid basis.

Any good ideas to avoid the burner phone plan? I tried an app called Flyp but it didn't work!

Price of entry for an iPhone with a usable amount of storage is $750, so you need to either double your budget or look at other options. Is the "lots of storage' for music, or photos, or what? If you just want a basic smartphone that can hold all your music and don't need high performance / giant screen, you really might get by just fine with a 16GB 2015 Moto G for $220 and a 64GB microSD card for $20.

Maybe. Motorola used to have a stellar reputation for updates, but recently has been more hit or miss.

That being said, from what you described the Moto G fits you perfectly. So I would second that recommendation.

Plan wise, I can definitely testify that ATT is fine for Philly coverage wise. You are probably currently paying $40-50 if you are on postpaid ATT with a dumb phone. Cricket is owned by ATT and uses ATT towers, you can get that as low as $35 a month with autopay for call, text and 2.5GB of data (and you can keep your number). The main downside is prepaid LTE 4G speeds on ATT is capped at 7-8mb vs postpaid which is 10-30, but for your usage it would seem like a huge upgrade either way. Postpaid ATT would start at $50 for call, text and 2GB, but all that gets you is slightly faster internet.

Howdy phone thread,

I've still running a Galaxy Nexus from about 3-4 years ago and finally decided that having a phone that dies every 5 hours is inconvenient enough to warrant a new one.

I figure pretty much anything on the market now is probably slightly better than the Nexus, but would be interested in hearing which are considered the top phones right now. I'm in the US, and would ideally like to get either something good ~$200, or can shoot up to $400 for something really spiffy.

For plans, I've been on Sprint for quite awhile now, but am think their rental plans are all awful and they haven't really done much to encourage me to stick with them. I really, really dislike the concept of renting a phone.

Getting unlimited data is probably the most important thing for me, but getting a plan that's ~$60/mo but could tolerate something more expensive.

Thanks!

Endless Mike
Aug 13, 2003

Only Sprint and T-Mobile offer unlimited data that I'm aware of. $60 isn't going to get you there. It looks like it's either $70 on Sprint or $80 on T-Mobile, though both have plans with limited LTE data, and unlimited throttled data. Might be worth re-evaluating your data usage and seeing if you can get away with less (T-Mobile doesn't count music streaming against your cap, so that might lower your usage a lot).

I guess if you want some specific ideas: T-Mobile plan with whatever amount of data, and either a 16 GB Moto G ($220), a Moto X (starting at $400), or Nexus 5P (starting at $380). Might be worth waiting until Black Friday/Cyber Monday for the Motorolas, since they've had some decent deals in the past.

I'm paying $119/mo with AT&T for this:
-FamilyTalk Nation 550 with Rollover: $50
-3GB data: $30
-200 texts: $5
-add'l line with 200 MB/200 texts: $30
Total after taxes, employer discount, etc.: $119

The above plan meets our needs, but I'm looking to either save money or upgrade devices, or both. We have a pair of iPhone 4S phones that are showing their age, but are still chugging along. I'm not dying to upgrade, but I'd do so if it makes sense. Am I leaving money on the table by not upgrading when I'm eligible?

Yeah, assuming said person will never go over that 200mb plan, you won't beat that price. Prepaid could, but I wouldn't do cricket in Mississippi where you might need roaming.

Upgrade phones on two year contract, the iPhone 6 starts at $140, 6S starts at $240.

Edit: If the coverage is there Verizon is:
$60 for call/text/6GB of data. Or $45 for 3. Data is shared.
$20 a line.
$22 each for an iPhone 6 (not 6S).

Maybe you get a work discount as well?

$144 (6Gb) or $129 (3GB) before taxes and possible discount, don't pay $140 up front for phones. Your plan is hard to beat, but that's an option.

Why are these teenagers not at home studying their Latin vocabulary?
Country: Belgium
Carrier: Mobile Vikings (with sim-unlocked phones, so no phone+carrier plan for me)
budget: max €300-400, but if I can get what I want for less, that's ok, too (only for the phone, phone plan is pay-as-you-go).

I'm looking to buy a new phone after my HTC Desire Z has finally (after many years) given up.
I'd like an Android Phone that supports at least 5.0, 5.1 or 6.0 (if that's possible within my budget).
I've gone to the stores to try out sizes, and I decided on max a 5" screen (5.5 is just too big), but between 4 and 5 is good as well.
I'd like to be able to open all websites (my Desire Z had some problems with sites which aren't optimised for older phones) and do so at reasonable speed. Gaming/special apps are not necessary. A good camera would be nice, but a mediocre one isn't a dealbreaker.
I just want a really, really fast smartphone that does what I want, gives me fast internet, opens the menu, ... instantaneously (and without a 30-60 sec delay, as my old phone had) and that won't become a slow brick within 2-4 years. Does this mean I need one of the higher-end phones?

It's got some major problems, and isn't really comparable to the flagships from established manufacturers on overall quality. Camera is a little subpar too. I'm shocked by Nexus 5X pricing, here the 5X is $380 base and the Oneplus 2 only model available is $389.

Hello, experts.

I'm in the U.S., and I've been using an LG Optimus V that I got for $50 on Black Friday 2011, on Virgin Mobile. I pay $37.85 a month for what used to be 300 minutes per month with unlimited text and data, and within the last year, they upgraded me to unlimited minutes too.

I've had my same Hotmail account since 1997, but when Microsoft recently changed Hotmail to Outlook, my old Hotmail app stopped working, so last night, I tried to uninstall and reinstall it. That didn't work -- it forced me to upgrade to the new Outlook app, and unfortunately that isn't compatible with my old phone. So now I don't have my main e-mail on my phone anymore, and I lost most of my contacts too. And now something happened where I can't even add new contacts through Gmail (which I never use) or my work e-mail, and I can't make outgoing calls anymore either. I get an error message saying "The process android.process.acore has stopped unexpectedly" every time I try.

I was really hoping to wait for Black Friday sales to upgrade -- I realize I got my money's worth and then some after three years and eleven months. But considering I can no longer check my Hotmail account, make calls, or even access my contacts, I need to get something sooner rather than later.

I'd like to stay with Virgin Mobile since the price is right, and I would like to keep my phone number too. I don't need anything too fancy -- maybe move up from 3G to 4G. But I mostly use my phone for checking multiple e-mail accounts and the Awful app to entertain myself out in public. The Optimus doesn't have a lot of storage space, so I had to uninstall Facebook and most other apps a few years back.

Oh, and I'd really love to keep this in the $100 range. Am I being unrealistic here?

Endless Mike
Aug 13, 2003

I'm sure you can get something that will work relatively okay (and certainly better than what you're dealing with now) in that price range. I wouldn't say any of the options on Virgin are *good* though. Looking at their site, I'd recommend stretching your budget a bit and getting a $150 Moto G.

If I were to really recommend something, it would be to stretch your budget even more, get a 16 GB Moto G and move to a GSM provider just to get away from being on a Sprint MVNO, but if you're happy with your service, that's not really for me to tell you to do.

T-Mobile, AT&T, and their various MVNOs are GSM providers. Cricket's cheapest plan is $35 if you set up autopay and has unlimited minutes and text, 2.5 GB of high-speed data, and unlimited throttled data, which is probably better than what you're actually getting on Virgin from looking at their current plans (though I suppose it's possible you're on an older one that has true unlimited data...not that it actually matters with a 3G phone).
