This way they know where the unit is, and they can put a face to the person that is calling and checking up on them. Also, if they don't like what they see they can ask for a different MOS. Yeah this. I'm glad I knew the people I was going to be reporting to, so that way I had an IDEA of who I needed to talk to and where their offices were when I was done with AIT. Doesn't help that when I came back from AIT, I went to the wrong armory (I didn't know we had two in Las Vegas), and got bitched out because how could I not know that our unit sometimes went to different armories for different drills.

Nothing is going to work Reserve wide. It just won't. Look how hard it is for ANYTHING to get done. There has been talk of a new PT test due "any time now" since basic. Still isn't here almost 9 years later. It took me three years for docs to consider medboarding me for my legs. On the plus side, the spine stimulator is great. The test is awesome so far, minus having wires out of my back. It's bad that I look forward to surgeries or getting sick so I can have time off. Especially this last one where I had to convince that 24 hour no driving, doing anything that could be signing a legal document, etc meant I shouldn't be at PT the very next morning.

How would that orientation go? This is the "office you'll be at where you will share a computer with 8 other junior enlisted. The office will also need to be cleaned weekly despite what state it is in. Now come with me, I'm going to show you the NCOIC and Officer's offices that you'll have to vacuum and take the trash out of. "

I think the story is that TRADOC spent like five years creating and verifying it to determine the standards, they briefed it to the commander for his final approval (probably before it went to the chief of staff), and someone asked where the slides were with MEDCOM's alternate PT events for profiles. "Uh, we were supposed to talk to them about that? Every step of the way?! And they have veto power on this? Sir, I wasn't briefed on that." We had a few guys we tried to get approved to enlist CAT IV (less than 31 on asvab so like half our testers) but they were reserve only and on so few positions that I never got to see it happen. In the more aggressive recruiting years during the war, CAT IVs were all over the place a guess. So yeah there are probably E6s out there with an asvab score of 24.

Bet he promoted into the stratosphere, too. Speaking of stupid, one of my guys got tapped to go to the piss handler course, then got short notice PCS orders. He'll be a UPL for a weekend. Retardog posted:There's a better than average chance that I'll be working on a project to reduce the number of nonparticipants in the Reserves. Since most of you have experience and aren't retarded, I'd love to hear your ideas on how we could do a better job of a) keeping people from just not showing up and b) if they aren't gonna come back, how we can get them out of the Army faster, either through separating them or transferring them to the IRR. quote:Biggest thing is prevention: make sure recruiters just aren't dumping recruits on your books without telling you. Then keep tabs on them before/after IET so that they know where and when to show up. Same goes for promotions: the RSCs love promoting people into positions for whatever obscure MOS they held 14 years ago at a unit located at the exact edge of their mileage statement. We also had a lot of success sending out AGRs to people's houses to explain why getting kicked out with an OTH for being a non participant is pretty bad. This is pretty much it. In addition you NEED to do the following - A) Following up on psydude's 2nd paragraph, ensure that ALL documentation - most importantly the certified letter confirmations from the post office is retained. Hold full timers, mil-techs and AGRs accountable for this. "It's missing" is too common an excuse. Yes, these people are overworked and in the case of miltechs, underpaid. They still need to be held accountable. That's all the commander can do in the reserves; make the full time staff do the work. If you don't enforce this on full timers it just gets worse B) Make sure packets are CORRECT the first time. Higher echelons love corrections because they can retain that soldier on the books as a number yet at the same time blame lower echelons for not doing the work correctly. Ask for status updates on submitted packets regularly. Hold higher HQ feet to the fire or they will gently caress it all up and then blame you every time. EVERY TIME. C) For soldiers that there is hope of salvaging, do what you need to do to salvage them. Get that soldier into the MOS they want. Re-assign them to a closer unit. Make sure their NCOs are arranging a ride to drill or car pooling for soldiers that are a long way way; some of our troops are pissing away their drill check in their gas tank. D) Along those lines, do not be an idiot. Do not have rules for the sake of rules, give your soldiers a fair shake to improve when they mess up. If there is a soldier that was late to drill, amazing as it may seem that does not make him a shitbag, It happens. It may even happen twice. It's HABITUAL that's a problem. You do not need hardass NCOs failing as many people on body fat as they can, they need to be bending over backwards to PASS people if they legitimately can. If there's a Burger King nearby and the soldiers want to go eat there instead of the catered meal LET THEM!! They have to pay for it! At December drill, do not have 4 hours of PowerPoint in the morning while the families sit around waiting to do the Christmas party. Get started early, get it done early. That E5 with 3 kids has a wife (or husband) that has to deal with those 3 kids for 2 hours after Santa is done while they scream their bored heads off because someone is holding them until "everything is done". No, it does not matter that 3 NCOERs are pending; he;s an E5! He doesn't write them! Get him out; if one is his, make arrangements for him to sign it later - then enforce it. Don't make his wife sit there for 2 hours with the kids and then she shits on him the whole way home about how the Reserves suck. She's right at that point! They do suck! E) Fight for decent ATs. Yes, sometimes you have to go to NTC or Ft. McCoy. This should be once every 3 or 4 years. Endlessly sitting around a FOB wearing body armor is not training. It isn't even training for the loving officers, how can it be training for the troops? Fight for good ATs where they get to go to real places, do real missions, and when they are done with the mission, HAVE SOME REAL FUN!! That doesn't mean playing volleyball in your PT clothes for 3 hours - it means getting to see some attractions and even *gasp* drink beer! People hate the reserves for the same reason they hate the real Army - it sucks! We've sucked any actual satisfaction completely out of it in favor of "standards" and "taking care of the soldier (lol)" and "readiness" and.. well, you've heard all the buzzwords. Make whatever effort you can to impose any sanity at all on any little corner of the Reserves.
