My Girlfriend and I Flying into Vegas this December for 4 days/3 nights. Looks like Excalibur and Circus Circus are the go to cheap places to stay.

First time going so a few general questions
Rental car vs taxi?
We plan on going rock climbing at least one day. Rental cars from the airport seem to be the same cost as a taxi. That said, taxi is probably way more convenient for getting around. We need a way to get to red rocks. I've heard you can get rental cars from a lot of hotels. Is this true?

So far on our check list
Gambling
Climbing
Nightclub - leaning Xs
a show - absinthe or cirque du soleil (best to buy tickets in advance or day of?)
Nice dinner - open for anything, neither of us are picky eaters. $30-70 a plate

Looking for more stuff to do. We'll probably budget a day for just walking all around the strip and doing whatever looks fun

Any players cards from specific casinos that come with awesome deals?

Do not stay at those places....I mean....Just why.

Rent a car. carrentals.com

Dinner - Depends on what food you really want. I'd hit L'Atelier De Joe Robuchon or Picasso probably if I had to pick a nice meal for a mid level price.

Take a spa day.

What about the Luxor? would prefer to keep it under 50-60$ /night after fees.

I'll look into these places. Dinner will probably be a game time decision.

I think its a you-get-what-you-pay-for sort of deal, and $60 a night is skimping is like Motel 6 in Iowa sort of rates. I've not stayed in those so I can't comment on them specifically but they have a reputation. If you're going to do Vegas right and spend 18 hours a day outside your room, maybe it doesn't matter?

NYNY and MGM are not much more expensive. I'd stay at either of those places before Circus Circus. I had to stay at Excalibur a couple of years ago and it ain't bad but would definitely stay at the two I mentioned over them.

Your dollar will also go a lot farther downtown, if you don't want to stay on the strip. I stay at the Golden Nugget, but you could also consider the Downtown Grand or even the El Cortez Cabana Suites if you want to try something a little funky.

If I were staying on the Strip I would probably do what jabro suggested. You could even go the Hotwire route.

Sign up for Caesars Total Rewards program and go through their websites for hotel deals. I've stayed in the Flamingo, Rio, and Planet Hollywood all for 50-60 a night doing that - all are definitely steps up from Circus Circus. Sometimes they'll even have free nights (not including resort fees). Obviously, you won't get deals like that around holidays or weekends, but still... worth a look.

Circus Circus is far from everything, Luxor and Excalibur are both dumps. The Flamingo, for example, is much nicer, right in the middle of the strip, and tends to have good deals often. It's a mistake to try to save like $30 a night on a room because in the end that's going to be the least of your costs. Splurge for your room and enjoy it. And if you don't HAVE to be on the strip, go for Fremont street, it's always cheaper there and everything is walkable.

And yeah, rent a car. If you're doing any more travelling than going around the strip you always should do that.

Luxor has the shabbiest looking lobby and casino and is really pretty trashy.

Excalibur isn't much better even though it has the FUN DUNGEON (it is not a fun place)

I think the MGM was literally $15 more expensive for me from Jay's page.

I was looking at the Flamingo as an option for a first trip in May next year. Are the "go" rooms worth the extra over the "fab" rooms?

And I'm guessing it's not really worth booking anything yet, since it seems like a lot of places have deals closer to?

They're pretty nice. The TV is bigger, there's a TV in the bathroom, the shower has multiple showerheads, and it has a fridge which is convenient for pregames and postgames. You can probably 20 dollar trick your way into one unless you're arriving on a Friday or on Memorial Day weekend. (and perhaps even then)

Trip report.

I stayed at the SLS hotel and it was quite nice. If you like a place that is kind of swanky but is also a tad small, it's fairly reasonably priced I feel. And if your coming to Vegas for a convention at the Las Vegas Convention Center, it's only one monorail stop away or a 10ish minute walk.

Also, my room has a mirror on the ceiling above the bed. This might be kinky/sexy if I had a girlfriend, wife or the ability to pick up a hot lady, but since I don't have any of those, it's just a bit creepy.

Quick background.

I was just in Vegas for a convention (like so many people) called LDI. It's a convention every year for people in the entertainment industry. Specifically people that work behind the scenes. Doing lighting, staging and audio for concerts, party's and events.

Now with that said, every year they make arrangements with the big nightclubs on the strip to have us come over. It is a amazing sight to see hundreds of stagehands walking right past the front door in to Omnia on a Saterday night while the rest of the beautiful people/plebs stand in line for hours trying to get in.:cheeky:

I just find it hilarious.:classiclol:

Also, the Omnia has very weak drinks, but a amazing set peice above the dance floor that flys in and out very fast. Quite a sight to see.

Going to a bachelor party and wedding in a few weeks (Nov 13-16) and need some ideas for lounges/ultra lounge type things for the bachelor party.

We are starting the bachelor party Friday night with the zipline down fremont. Then heading to the Stratosphere for drinks / rides maybe. After that is kind of up in the air.

Are there any lounges that are better than others? I believe we'll have a limo for transportation throughout the night. I've never gone out on a friday in Vegas though.

Most people will tell you to avoid the Stratosphere and I'd be inclined to agree. That place is an absolute dump. Maybe do the rides during the day but I'd recommend heading to the strip for any drinking/lounge activities.

Agreed, the bar at the top of the stratosphere is sort of cool for about five minutes but it was dead when we went and you'll probably want to leave and actually go to the big shiny buildings you're looking at. Also my friend's girlfriend got punched in the stomach at the pool by a beach umbrella when we stayed there

Don't even bother, unless you're staying at the Stratosphere you have to pay for admission to both the tower AND the rides. It adds up real quick. Plus it's far from everything, either stay in the downtown area or in the main strip (between Wynn and MGM basically) for fun times.

I would just stay downtown Friday Night. You can bar hop to a few cool places down there. Mid November is fuckin dead here.

On a similar subject, Excalibur, Circus Circus and the Luxor are dumps? I was under the impression they were - okay - but what other popular hotels/clubs/restaurants should one be weary of?

Any CET property that isn't the Cromwell, Paris, certain Caesars towers, and planet Hollywood I guess.

Monte Carlo is blah but they're remodeling it I think.

They aren't dumps like a roadside motel. It's just better to spend a little more to get a lot more.

Look for non gaming hotels for occasional deals like Vdara and MGM/Signature.

Dump is a relative term. Circus Circus is aimed at families, Excalibur is like a big TGI Fridays, and Luxor is just boring.

Haha I really like the Excalibur as TGI Friday's comparison. Only reason I go there/Luxor is because there's $5 craps and it's cheaper to put full odds on the pass line/come bets.

It's a relative term. But they're dumps. There are much nicer hotels who target the same types of crowds.

Yeah, I mean by strip standards they're dumps. It's not like they're falling apart (well, Luxor might be, actually) or sketchy, but they're pretty crappy options for Vegas. So yeah, dumps.

They're not dumps in the seedy motel sense. They're just 25+ years old or so and it shows. When it would cost $100mill+ to renovate a hotel like the Luxor or equivalent it just doesn't really make financial sense. In the last 15 years or so there have been so many high end hotels that have been built that the older ones became dated very quickly. And with so many rooms to fill, room pricing is cheap across the board.
