ANU study has identified 5 social classes in Australia.

quote:

According to the ANU's analysis the class group you most closely match is: Established working

Estimate of population percentage:24%

Established working class Australians are the oldest group, with an average age of 66 years. They have the lowest participation in both highbrow and emerging cultural activities, the lowest social contact score and the lowest occupational prestige among their contacts.

I know baristas, IT shmucks, database admins, directors, a UXO removal specialist, armed forces, government workers in various roles, tradespeople, an escort, youtube artist, concept artist, forestry worker, financial adviser...

surprisingly few scientists actually. maybe because most of them became teachers.

edit: derp, the first one is who do you know in these jobs.

After a successful start to a national badminton competition, Hijran and her teammates thought a meal out together would be a nice way to celebrate.
However the Australian-born woman, of Turkish origin, was left embarrassed and upset when she was told she would have to leave an RSL in popular holiday spot Noosa for wearing a hijab.
Hijran, who asked that her surname be withheld, travelled to the Sunshine Coast with her Melbourne badminton club for the week-long Atalanta Jamboree competition against Australian and New Zealand teams.

Message from Phil Stephenson
CEO of Tewantin Noosa RSL & Citizens Memorial Club Inc

The Tewantin Noosa RSL & Citizens Memorial Club Inc recently received a complaint from one of our patrons in relation to a Muslim lady who was asked about her headscarf while at the club. Unfortunately, a lot of mis-information has been spread about this issue which we wish to clarify.

The Club does have a dress code that doesn't allow men or women to wear headwear unless it is for medical or religious purposes or for other purposes approved by the board. This includes no bandanas, hats and caps and is seen as a mark of respect to those who served. A Muslim lady recently attended the club in a headscarf and the club supervisor asked if the scarf was for religious purposes to which the answer was yes. The lady was not asked to leave the club and the party actually went on to have an enjoyable visit as was relayed to the reception staff on the party's departure and this is also evident in the CCTV footage of the party throughout the various areas of the Club.

I have investigated the matter with the staff concerned, received written statements regarding the events and reviewed CCTV footage and believe the staff handled the matter appropriately. We have also taken the additional step of reinforcing this policy with our staff to ensure they have a clear understanding of the intent and implementation of this policy.

The Club is not discriminatory in any way and it is not the Club's intention to relay any form of discrimination to its Members, visitors or guests. The Club is very multicultural in its membership base and staffing of the Club.

We have seen reports in various media outlets quoting a lady named, Hijran. The actual lady in question has made no complaints nor had any correspondence with the club to date. The media reports do not match with our staff reports or the CCTV footage. We believe our staff acted in a respectful and appropriate manner however have reiterated our policy to all staff that head wear for religious and medical reasons is allowed in the club.

We understand this is a passionate issue in the community but are disappointed to see that there were many racist, discriminatory and hateful comments on Facebook between community members attacking each other for their views. We will not tolerate profanity and hateful comments on our Facebook page and as such have deleted any such case of these and will continue to do so in the future.

Yeah I also saw that. :v:

quote:

Phil Stephenson, CEO of Tewantin-Noosa RSL, disputes Hijran’s account of the event, though he did not witness it directly.

He said that according to a statement given to him by the staff member involved they had initially failed to recognise the hijab as a religious item, which should be exempt from the venue’s dress code on a religious basis. He said as soon as the staff member identified the item as of religious significance a “friendly chat” ensued.

When pushed on how Hijran’s understanding of the event had become so different to his he said, in relation to her account, “I don’t entirely believe it”. Stephenson declined to put New Matilda in contact with staff who directly witnessed the event and would not forward the statement tendered to him by the staff member involved.

After news of the incident spread among other members of the badminton tournament there was anger. One woman – not known personally to Hijran – left a post criticising the RSL on its Facebook page.

And then the inevitable happened.

Under the post a string of racial and religious abuse began.

Despite the club insisting it allows religious and medical exemptions for head coverings in all cases, some leaving comments said they supported the club preventing Muslim women wearing hijabs so that “the rules apply to everyone equally”. Others were more overt.

“Islam is not a religion but an evil cult. Dont [sic]like the rules? Keep out, simple as that,” Raymond Stuart wrote.

“stop playing the anti muslim [sic]card all the time you stupid muslims! [sic],” said Jason Hude.

Pokies are worse than tobacco. At least smoking gives you an exit in death. Excessive gambling destroys lives, families and financial flexibility with such ease and once your hooked on the minor pots and flashing lights there is no real easy exit...

Old people with that money zombie syndrome is one of the worst experiences a hospitality employee can see on a day to day basis. Nothing would make me happier than seeing those scam dispensers banned for good.
