The Vosgian Beast posted:Sure, you can make the case for that but this topic of discussion brings out the worst extremes of neckbeardery. You might as well bring up people not liking Dark Souls 2 as much as Dark Souls 1. I watched the video LInkara did on Homestuck, and I honestly don't get what the big deal is. I like that it's a riff on text adventures. I get that there's a lot more to it, and he probably didn't cover in the video, but I have no desire to learn more about Homestuck. i am tim! posted:Shamus Young is a doofus that takes every valid criticism of FO3 and drowns it in hyperbole. Fallout 3 is rife with lazy writing, but that's more disappointingly typical of Bethesda than anything else given that it's a vehicle for exploring a post apocalyptic DC. All things considered, it was a really fun wasteland to explore! Shamus Young posted:Are you one of the people who played through Fallout 3 without noticing any of these problems? That’s fine. Lots of people clicked through the dialog without listening, or listened to the dialog without thinking too much about it. You might spend several hours screwing around in subways and killing ghouls between story beats, and by the time you reach the next signpost on your journey the details of the previous scene might seen a little vague. I do see how it gets hyperbolic at points, but I still think it does a good job dealing with the various issues in the game's setting and narrative; not just in how they compare to the older Fallout games, but how they don't work in general. I mean, WHY would you build your town around a nuclear bomb? The only justification I can think of is that it's set in a crater, and setting up a settlement within a crater might provide some additional protection from storms. I'll say that Fallout 3 was my introduction to series, and I liked it enough when it came out. It was around that time, though, when I heard the complaints that it was a dumbed-down ARPG. However, my feeling has always been that Fallout benefited from that change. I briefly tried to play Fallout 2 when Fallout 3 had still yet to be released, and if you've never played a classic CRPG before, it's extremely unwelcoming (although that's partially because the Temple of Trials in F2 is just a bad introduction in general.) By styling it similarly to The Elder Scrolls, I think Bethesda was able to open the game up to a much wider audience. I think a good endorsement of Fallout 3 comes from this interview with Tim Cain(the lead designer for Fallout 1)[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4XVW6qcuzM&t=110s. He liked Fallout 3, and he hits on the same idea that it fits in more with the Bethesda wheelhouse than the older games do. His primary critique is on how Bethesda should have tried to come up with something more original, rather then carry over a lot of elements from the older games. KKall posted:This is why I don't usually talk about video games. Like I said, though, it was a really interesting video. You brought up A Canticle for Leibowitz, and it reminded me of a cut location from Fallout 2 called the Abby, which served as a more of a direct copy of the 'technology as holy artifacts' concept.

I'm not sure what Bethesda wants Fallout to be, since they're removing stat checks with the new dialogue system. The games have always been really about dialogue and handling of situations. You could shoot your way through things but you could also talk and circumvent obstacles. The gun customization in the upcoming game looks rather neat but in a post-Witcher 3 world, I don't think their brand of open world is for me any more. The give you a bunch of stuff to do but most of isn't at all very compelling. It's a bummer since I'm a Massachusetts resident so seeing post-apocalyptic Boston would have been neat, but I just have no desire being Bland Voiced Protagonist with stupid dialogue choices written by people who don't care about writing.

Wow Fallout 4 is sounding like it's going to be bargain Bin Witcher 3 from what I'm reading. At least for me all my hype/emotional investment is in XCOM 2, where the story is your soldiers inciting a global rebellion to overthrow alien overlords. Now I could go into a tirade of how revolutions tend to just get in a new dictator rather than cause any substantial change of life for the average citizen, but chances are it won't go into something like how after the war it's probably going to end like what should've happened at the end of Falling Skies, where all the humans start to fight each other with superior weaponry courtesy of XCOM and aside from the boundless leaps from alien tech, not much will change in terms of human nature. After all the game series is more focused on the murdering of aliens through the use of strategy and base management, not the sociopolitical implications your organization has on the world stage.

When he cuts in with a one liner, it can be gold, like when he goes into the acallepa version of Hulk Hogan's theme in the Thunder in Paradise video. He's like Diabeetus in Retsupurae, where Slowbeef is the more talkative, but Diabeetus has great timing and one liners. Actually, should we talk about retsupurae in this thread? I guess they're not really "critics", when though they critique things on the Internet?

Beefstew posted:Fallout 3 really epitomizes Bethesda writing. It has the mostly laughably stupid "heroic sacrifice" in the history of media. The game even acknowledges that it makes no sense, so it's just there for some really forced dramatic tension. Didn't Bethesda put in a hella passive aggressive ending for making the guy who IS RADIATION IMMUNE do what you're supposed to do, where it calls you a coward? Now that I think about it, didn't ME3 also do that? Miss Wallace posted:We both kinda do it without being aware of it sometimes! I try to tone it down when we're reviewing but sometimes I space it. Just a nervous habit I guess. I can attest for doing awkward stuff when nervous. If I get especially stressed during work I tend to walk in circles and constantly rub my hands together. If I'm focused I can stop myself from habitually walking in circles but I'm still rubbing my hands together. Just something you can't really help.
