The two VCR editing thing was mentioned by Robert Rodriguez in Rebel Without a Crew, his book on the creation of the Mariachi trilogy of films. It's basically the bible for amateur filmmakers trying to figure out how to make a feature film on the smallest budget possible. When he was a kid, his dad was a VCR salesman and he ended up with a pair of VCRs that he could use to edit. He also had a video camera with no viewfinder that he connected directly to the TV and used for filming straight to the VCR, though he was inevitably limited in filming locations to the length of a extension cords.

I still don't know what exactly makes Soylent 'better' than some traditional hospital grade stuff like liter bottles of Jevity and the like. edit: I guess the price of Soylent is a lot more competitive than the feeding tube/non-feeding tube versions of the nutritional replacement supplements now, but I'd rather just grab a case of Ensures or something. Eh, it's a "stop being hungry with minimal effort"-product, and probably less unhealthy than most of the dreary fast food in that niche. I can't really hate that it exists - not that that's especially high praise.

In absolute abstract, probably not. What's hateful about it is the idea that eating is somehow a chore and an inconvenience, one that needs to be remedied or "hacked" by drinking gruel. If that most basic of living needs is somehow preventing you from devoting more time to coding or whatever the gently caress inspired Soylent, maybe you should re-evaluate your career choices.

Some people, like myself, have appetite problems, because of different medical issues. So its not all about maximizing your 100% uptime on coding efficiency or whatever. So you can get off your high horse on that one dude. That said, like some goon said earlier, I just drink Ensure. If I can't make myself eat food but I need nutrients, I drink protein shakes and slimfasts and stuff. Pretty much the same thing as soylent except it tastes good and its sold in stores everywhere.

Would that have worked?

Ensure gives you 50% of your daily required Vitamin C, so drinking two of those a day (or one plus some other foods) means no scurvey for life, yeah. If you take multivitamins you don't even need the ensure, although you'll need some protein and calories somehow. Other things work fine too, just as long as you get some Vitamin C. Anything with a large bit of it on the nutrition label and you're good to go. And even other fruits and vegetables like tomatoes give you a good lot of vitamin C. Scurvey is only a problem if you're eating like fish and nothing else, like pirates did. Course there's other nutritional things to worry about other than just scurvey

I can't speak for the taste specifically but my girlfriend got samples of 100% Food, a similar product to Soylent, and I thought it tasted way better than any nutrition or protein drink I've ever had. She's a former anorexic and just doesn't enjoy the act of eating.

I had a sip of the chocolate one and it was a very nice Dutch cocoa flavor with no chemical aftertaste or the fruity flavor a lot of organic cocoa has. I enjoy eating but I could see grabbing one if I was too busy to eat and wanted something fairly healthy. Or sipping on one when I'm sick and my stomach is being difficult.
