Most adaptations have Beast turn into a blue freak by trying to cure himself of his mutation, because that's a lot more relatable than just drinking some weird poo poo for kicks.

Sandman was one of the very first comics I ever read, I feel like I probably missed a ton of stuff.

Yeah give Sandman a reread Zoux. Parts don't always hold up but it's still a remarkably rich series worth some delving and a phenomenal snapshot into the time when it was written.
