Also what's logical from the outside probably isn't anything like how the candidates see things. If you're the kind of person who's enough of a megalomaniac to think you should run the country, and are constantly surrounded by a bunch of people saying you can and will run the country, dropping out probably seems unthinkable until you absolutely have to face it.

You also have to believe that every campaign thinks Trump and Carson will both flame out, and thus their current ~45% level of support makes the difference between polling at 3% and polling at 8% pretty trivial. I'm not saying that they're correct, mind you. But it's easy to imagine that they each have some variation of "when that finally happens, I'll be the brash tell-it-like-it-is guy" or "when that finally happens, I'll finally be able to get some media coverage" or some other variation.
