That would work for having no station music at all, but the goal was to not interrupt the track that's playing outside the station.

But lacking the :orks101: details like the giant sharkmouth made from riveted armor plates, broadsides modeled as giant cannons sticking out the side, or a big exhaust pipe that belches black smoke when you hit the boosters. And I actually had some traders who survived the enemy dreanaught too. I guess that one flew into some of my mines and decided that meant it should be flagged as hostile despite being, you know, one of the protection targets?

Well, that would be an improvement to any ship. So can't blame you there.

Also, remember those patch notes about better escort mission pathing? :shepicide: "But why don't you just skip escort missions then?" It's a main story mission. And then after he stopped pathing into unrelated planets, they flew to the station... past it to get in a ramming match with an enemy ship, and proceeded to fly 7m away from the station. Just milling about slowly chasing after anything with a gun. Until finally, with a pixel of health bar left, all enemies were dead. No longer able to commit suicide, it flew 10 times faster than ever before towards the station for mission completion.

So I just got the Minotaur and- :gizz:

Oh my god it's everything I had hoped for. That chin turret is a bit iffy, but the thing swivels so well at half throttle that it is only an issue if a gunship flies past it's arc... Which usually means it's now in front of a fully aimed broadside salvo.

Having the top rear turret as a Scatter or Pulse set to Fighters Only remains the most effective set and forget anti-fighter weapon. Which you can actually stop to flip to open combat if you are fighting a dreadnought or something unlike Flak or Swarm turrets.

I got 3 Particle beams (top middle, and chin). An Ion on the bottom, and everything else is Pulse turrets.

Lasers are the best anti fighter weapon. Once you hit dreadnoughts, it's four lasers set to fighters and the rest all pulse all the time.

Eh. *tilts hand back and forth*

If you're going whole hog on particle beams they're a nice complement -- if you can afford the mounting space. Without some kind of anti-shield weapon the beams just tickle things forever. But you can also get the same result with a single shieldbuster launcher. So use ions if you are one of the people that hates ordnance.

I do feel like ions should be priced about the same range as pulse turrets rather than up with the more expensive guns.

My issue with shieldbusters is that you need to set them to fire on locked or they just spam out all their ammo, but I don't always want them to fire on my locked target. It's another place where more hotkey functions would be useful as I'd like to have it fire on manual without needing to switch to turret view.

Eh, the game itself is honestly pretty intuitive. You'll figure it out quickly enough. The only thing to note is that you should move on to tougher systems sooner rather than later. It is easy to spend too long in the first system when you could be making four times as much in the second.

The real killer is filling out all those turret slots.

When I upgraded my Manticore to the Minotaur, it cost 4.1 million for the ship, 4.7 million for the single MK6 Particle beam.

A Blackgate Dread would cost me about 9 million. A Blackgate has 7 more turret slots than the Minotaur, but if I stuck with scatter turrets those are only 2.1 million each :shepspends:

Starsector is the game you're looking for. The individual ship combat alone beats the pants off of every other 2d spacegame out there (and Rebel Galaxy, for that matter), and then there's fleet mechanics. Often compared to Mechwarrior in terms of its in-depth loadout customization and weapon resource management. Also noteworthy for having the hands-down best and most creative way of handling defensive shields that I've yet seen in any spacegame.

I'd be playing it right now, except I'm waiting for the latest juicy update to drop. :sigh:

Yeah maxing out on level 6 gear is only needed if you want to do silly things like use a low-level ship in the endgame. Putting all top-level stuff on a big ship like the minotaur or the dreads turns combat into a cakewalk.

But he might just be grinding out a fully upgraded ship as a way to "finish" the game.

I really, really wanted to like Starsector. I loved playing through the tutorials... The 2-level ship piloting plus tactical fleet command is great. But the game feels balanced around being fun & challenging for the people who play it obsessively. It has a difficulty curve like a brick wall. And unfortunately for me, the direction the developer has gone seems to be more detail rather than more approachable.

Rebel Galaxy is maybe a little too easy. The game doesn't get ruthless with throwing overwhelming odds at the player and the AI doesn't press its numerical superiority very well. You can make it harder for yourself intentionally by jumping ahead early or being hostile to more factions, but the path of least resistance is very gentle.

For anyone who finished the game and said "this is for babies", I second checking out Starsector -- even though I'm not that big a fan of it. It's got great AI and zero qualms about crushing your balls.

I just finished playing through this game. It was a a ton of fun, finished up with a Sturville and all mk 6 gear, mostly beams and ramming. My strategy was basically pull up alongside whatever super capital ship I was trying to take down and unload laser death at point blank, which was actually pretty survivable since they provided cover from about half the battlefield and I would nestle in ahead or behind their broadsides.
I really hope they add more endgame content in future updates, I don't really feel like grinding out a lot more cash to get a big, slow behemoth when there isn't really much else to do after completing the story that I can't handle in the Sturville.

Also, Steve is the best mercenary personality.

Get a Wolf from the Hegemony. Toss some tactical lasers on the turrets, a pulse laser for your main weapon, and your choice of missile. By yourself you can take out small fleets. With a team of wolves you're pretty much unstoppable.

If you actually bought it instead of just doodling around in the demo, play it with half damage or shamelessly use the dev commands until you've figured out what works. Leveling up is satisfying, but at the end of the day you're doing this to blow up spaceships.

Rebel Galaxy and Starsector both have you farting around in the beginning for a while before you can really start to murder stuff. I'm pretty sure half the time in my first playthrough was in the first two systems, where 5000 spacebucks is a mountain of money.

I understand what you mean, but what you're talking about is really a problem with campaign balancing rather than the innate combat mechanics. Once you get the hang of it, pretty much the only thing the computer can do better than you is manage a rotary shield on a small, fast ship, and that's not that big of a deal. You don't need to be a truly great pilot to be the strongest thing in your fleet. Starsector may be a little overwhelming at first, but to me it has always seemed a lot friendlier than the vast majority of all the weird indie spergsims and wannabe-roguelikes out there.

The real problem is just that you start out without enough small fry of your own size to chew on, and I chalk that up to just being unfinished and in-progress rather than deliberate sadism toward the player. The very beginning of the game is literally the hardest part. It's been getting better since he added starting options with better ships and a good escort, but it needs work. And again, it's no big deal once you figure out how things work- when you know what fights not to pick, starting becomes an obstacle more of tedium than actual difficulty. But I admit it is a wall to new players. Worth overcoming, though.

What I dislike about Rebel Galaxy in this comparison is not so much a lack of difficulty (there's some poorly balanced parts outside the main story missions that tried to break my balls harder than anything Starsector's done lately), but lack of fun depth. I mean, there's tactics you can use, but most of the time being clever doesn't really matter and it mostly comes down to 'keep shooting'. That, and the pointlessly sluggish controls of being a literal boat in space bothers me more than I thought it would, more than being stuck on a 2d plane- it just doesn't feel like flying.

I know where the thread is. :)

I did the things it says to do (get a wolf, pick this start, go after those guys at first) and it improved things a bit, but not enough to make things at all enjoyable. That advice is on page 1, and yet every second page has people asking how to get started. That might, just miiiight, be a sign.

Anyways it's a WIP game, and I had enough fun playing around with the one-off instant battles that the campaign being an unfinished dud didn't make me angry or anything. But it's a game I can't 100% recommend because not only is that a problem for now, it's also something that I'm not sure will ever be fixed. Accessibility matters and I've not seen much progress on that front.
