Start.ca just released new plans and they're decent. 60/10 400gb for $65 and they offer the CDA3 cable modem which is just a plain modem with no bridging or wireless bullshit.

Not so much upset as disappointed. People claim to care about these issues like the amazing cartel of telecom we have in this country but as soon as it's a little more advantageous it's an immediate forget and dump. I can understand on price but that's about it. Most people are not going to notice a difference between 50Mb/s down and 100. Half of these poo poo box combo routers can't even do those speeds on wireless anyways.

I think it helps if Tek keeps the same ideology they've had for years which is to continue to petition the CRTC and push policies that help smaller internet providers to get into the market which ultimately leads to better choices for the consumer. If they don't care about their business anymore and they stop doing these things then cancel your service and head to someone who does care. It's going to be very interesting in the next couple of years to see where the CRTC lands on sharing of fibre. This is honestly where Tek needs to make their biggest push and really get involved in the policy decisions.

I just got a letter from Telus noting that I have gone over my data allotment for two months in a row, 20 and 30GB over my 400 on the 50Mb plan. They ask me to consider springing for the unlimited package or stepping up to the next tier. So, pay $5 for the less than 50GB over or $30 for unlimited? Yeeeeah ok there Telus. Also the 100Mb plan isn't even available in my area. Bunch o goofballs.

It's choosing an internet service provider, not a battle for your immortal soul. Teksavvy has had to make a lot of tough decisions lately to keep their business profitable, it's unfortunate but understandable. But there's no obligation to keep paying them for service when the competition is actually providing something better. They're a business, not your friend.

Basically that. I get 100/20 from Telus right now for $22/mo + $30 for unlimited cap. This is only until next Sept though when my deal for moving into a new place runs out. Then it's right back up to $90/mo or whatever the hell they charge.

Are there even any service providers in Edmonton that provide more then 5 mbits upstream for residential users? I'm in the market for anything over 50 mbits down right now, would be willing to pay between 90-120 a month. Getting more then 5 up would be pretty nice

The download and upload have been consistent so far which is really what I was looking for. I don't know what Shaw did but the last 3 months I was lucky to get 15 down in the evening, generally I was closer to 3-6 down, while paying for a 60/3.

The only reason I've stuck it out with TSI is for ideological reasons but now that they're traffic shaping and slowing down 'bandwidth hogs' more than the average customer I see no more reason to stick with them. The last part is really what gets me. If someone pays for 400gigs and uses 400 gigs every month, how can they be called anything but a user. Same with unlimited, don't sell a package called unlimited if you're not willing to have a handful of people peg the downstream 24/7. The Rogers 250mbps package looks really attractive and with no contracts, I could go back to TSI or start.ca if the CRTC ever gets their rear end in gear.

If I went to rogers, I'd be giving money to two companies so no, it makes no fiscal sense to switch over. But hey, keep moving your own goalposts. It's canada, nobody cares.

Sweet, gonna give Telus a call and see what's available in my apartment. ~93-100 bucks a month for 100/20 with telus is crazy compared to 60/5 with TekSavvy cable for 89 a month. Not to mention that the congestion on the cable line in the primetime evenings is God awful, sends my speeds down to ~5-10 mbps down and 3 up with rampant packet loss and twice the usual latency. Hopefully the wires carrying the DSL are good in my building.

Jesus Christ, I never thought I'd say it, but I think I need to call Bell and see if they can run DSL to this decrepit shack. I've had week-long periods of near-total service outage since September, thanks to unexplained noise on the lines here in London, and I think it's actually managed to get worse. I feel like the loving Nineties are repeating on me.

Telus is now sending me a letter every month because I am either over or close to the limit of my data cap (400GB), telling me I should upgrade plans (I am on the highest available in my area) or pay $30 for unlimited. I paid $5 extra a couple times because I went over by less than 50GB so I don't know how dumb Telus thinks people are?? They could save the loving paper already, it's getting annoying. 400GB goes fast with all the youtube and netflix the family watches.

The big providers have raised their prices/ dropped their caps again just past October. At least in my area Teksavy is considerably cheaper long term looking at non-promo rates than others.

There seems to be alot of knowledge in this thread. Hope I can throw in a question. I'm looking to get cable internet for my parent's home. They are currently on Teksavvy DSL. They had a bell phone line until recently when they ported their bell phone number to Rogers home phone. Rogers installed their home phone and (I'm assuming) re-wired something. Their internet still works (though only receiving about half the speed). And they are not paying any dry loop fees to anyone. Will any of this be an issue if I get cable internet from Start.ca? I plan on keeping the Teksavvy DSL until Start.ca cable is up and running.

Did Rogers connect their modem to the house wiring? You don't really need to do that unless you have wired phones all around the house. I'm not sure if you can put a filter on that connection, but generally DSL filters fix the issues you're describing.

I used to fight those off saying I already had the best package and they should probably put a less aggressive cap on an obvious power user. They finally stopped letting me win that so I now pay the $30 for unlimited. Due to this I make drat sure I move 6TB every month; sometimes more.

Yeah I don't go past 50GB over, and each additional 50GB is $10. So if you go 200GB over ($35) then it is cheaper to get unlimited @$30. Otherwise why bother.
