when halo was first released, they also published a bunch of tie-in novels. they had a semi-canonical status in that bungie was happy to, and frequently did, stomp all over them when writing subsequent games. as a result the novels sort of went off into their own little world and became a rather different story then ownership of the franchise was transferred from bungie to 343, who decided for halo 4 to unify the novels and the game by retconning stuff in the game storyline to fit where the novels had ended up. this made the game story incomprehensible to anyone who hadn't kept up with the novels and directly contradicts the earlier games in several places none of that really has anything to do with the tender emotional sexy cortana death scene, but it explains why you should not get into halo lore even if you like the manshooting
