It’s almost here. Check back to sign up for YouTube Red, launching in the U.S. on October 28, 2015.

Also, for whatever reason they decided to make it exactly the same product as Google Play Music All Access:

As an added bonus, your YouTube Red membership includes a free subscription to Google Play Music, with access to its extensive catalog of music. My understanding is that there's been some confusion/debate over what qualifies as music for the All Access thing and what doesn't, and having two subscription services that may or may not cover any given video seemed a bit complicated, so they decided that it'll be a single subscription that just covers absolutely every video on the site, no further questions.

Well, Google Play Music actually had nothing to do with Youtube Music before this - it's a separate app that works like Pandora combined with iTunes, and subscribing to All Access removed ads from the radio station part and let you stream and/or download (with DRM to disable it when your subscription lapses) arbitrary quantities of music from the store part, it didn't remove ads from any Youtube videos or do anything else to Youtube at all.

But I guess it makes sense to combine the two given the potential confusion between Youtube Music (service which makes infinite playlists of music videos people uploaded to Youtube) and Google Play Music (service which makes infinite playlists of music given to Google to sell).

No, they did. They just didn't care.

In a Q&A session with reporters Wednesday at YouTube Space Los Angeles, company executives were asked if they were concerned that consumers would confuse their new YouTube Red product with RedTube, an online porn platform.

“We did a lot of consumer testing, so we were comfortable with it,” Robert Kyncl, YouTube chief business officer, said of the name.

“A we talked to fans, as we talked to users, as we did our studies, the term ‘red’ was very associated with YouTube. It’s sort of core to what is the YouTube brand,” Matthew Glotzbach, vice president and product manager for YouTube, said. “It has a lot of meaning in terms of love, it has a lot of meaning in terms of premium exprerience — the red carpet, the red velvet rope. So we felt like it was a really good match. We’re not too worried about that other site.”

So, good news came out of the EFF today.

https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2015/10/victory-users-librarian-congress-renews-and-expands-protections-fair-uses

quote:

Archiving and Preserving Video Games

The Librarian granted part of EFF’s new proposal for an exemption to preserve abandoned video games. The new exemption allows players to modify their copy of a game to eliminate the need for an authentication server after the original server is shut down. Museums, libraries, and archives can go a step further and jailbreak game consoles as needed to get the games working again. Disappointingly, the Librarian limited the exemption to games that can’t be played at all after a server shutdown, excluding games where only the online multiplayer features are lost. Still, this exemption will help keep many classic and beloved video games playable by future generations.

... So, what, only Doritos Crash Course 2 from the Xbox Live Arcade? PlayStation Home?

I can't think of any other games that outright can't be played even in single-player due to their online servers, but I presume there's some MMOs out there that have been prematurely discontinued.

I think that might include any of the Games For Window Live games that didn't get ported over. Some of them required you to be logged in in order to even get to the main menu.

Valve said ten years ago or so that if Steam ever goes down, they'll figure out a way to give you the games DRM-free. I don't know if this still holds, especially with new features like Steamworks.

Considering how games that don't require you to be online can still be played in "Offline Mode", or simply using the executable in the games folder, it doesn't seem to me that it would be too hard for them to accomplish that.

Oh, and the only difference I've noticed when playing a game without an internet connection: Starting the game via steam also lets you use whatever DLC you have for the game.

They might be on the edge for recommending for Let's Play, but I've been watching way too much of Loading Ready Run's Twitch streams lately. They're pretty great and there's a metric fuckton of content on their backup YouTube channel. You should definitely check out at least the channel trailer if you look at nothing else in this post. Their backup is a couple months behind, but their VoDs aren't behind a subscribe wall in Twitch so there's not too much you're missing if you're worried about it. It'll be up on YouTube eventually if you come across a gap between the two places.

For a little background info on them, Loading Ready Run is a Canadian sketch comedy group that did weekly online comedy sketches for 11 years, every week, before retiring their weekly video series December last year. They're largely known for their individual Three PS3s, Halo: The Future of Gaming and Epic Nunchuck fail videos, their annual Desert Bus for Hope fundraiser for Child's Play, and their work for the Escapist in a few seasons of their weekly series, the Unskippable series, Graham and Paul Let's Play (which is continued on Wednesdays on their streams, currently they're playing through Far Cry 4) and the Daily Drop series. They also do contract work, most notably Magic: The Gathering's Friday Nights.

As for their streams, they usually stream every day of the week except Sundays. This weekend is light for them since they're attending PAX Prime with a booth, panel and multiple events. They have a whole bunch of people that stream, each with their own tastes and preferences so there's a good chance there's someone you'd enjoy watching. You can find the schedule on their website, which also has a little blurb on each show. They do use a facecam and overlays, but most of them have been doing video content for 12 years and are pretty good at keeping the game visible and themselves entertaining.

A few shows I'd recommend checking out if you're still reading: Watch + Play, where Alex is provided games of outstandingly terrible quality and plays them blind; Let's Nope, where Alex plays horror games of varying quality, sometimes completely; House of Stark, where Graham plays games, just a regular guy, no gimmicks; GPLP, where Graham and Paul Let's Play; LRRMtG, where (usually) Graham and James play Magic: The Gathering Online, I really only suggest this if you like Magic; Beej's Backlog, where Beej plays Nintendo games he usually never got a chance to as a kid; and Crossing the Streams, where at least two of the LRR crew play co-op games.

A few little updates I thought worth mentioning.

First, they're now pretty close to getting caught up between the Youtube channel and the Twitch streams. There's a good bit of overlap so you can watch pretty much everything without having to wait for it to be put up after it gets taken off Twitch.

Second, they've recently hit their AFK streaming goal on their Patreon. It's allowed them a pretty good setup for streaming physical games like non-MTGO Magic: The Gathering, Cards Against Humanity and Hero Quest. The second Hero Quest session is just after they met their goal, so they picked up a better overhead camera and added a small webcam they could reposition around the board.

Finally, their ninth annual Desert Bus For Hope marathon is starting in a couple weeks, November 14th.

Well the most basic reason is that people try to follow the most popular trend of the times; in the case of youtube LP's, it would only make sense to ride on the coat tails of Pewdiepie and mimic his style (i.e. facecam, yelling, mild incompetence). You could also see a similar trend after the Angry Video Game Nerd when video game 'reviewers' started popping up with a similar style of 'negative adjective' game nerd tears into an obviously poo poo game. Gradually as the trends get more and more saturated, the need to head further and further into the extremes set down becomes necessary to stand out. It's not enough to have a facecam, you need to have cleavage or some goofy hat on; it's not enough to be mildly incompetent, you need to be utterly devoid of all skill or reasoning at a game. Invariably though trends will shift towards other directions, and maybe skilled and informative LP's will become something of interest to people. But at most I think people will try to lean towards something like what ChipCheezum does, mixing humor and niche skill to draw in people.

It's funny to see people bumble and get bewildered at things, and those things include games. People like watching funny videos. It ain't that hard. Also, it's quite hard to be good at games and have engaging commentary at the same time, one of them will suffer and it's the gameplay 99% of the time. Also also, professional Youtubers need to be constantly putting out content, and for videogames that means diving into genres you're not super familiar with. The only group I ever saw with passable fighting game skills are the SBFP guys, for instance. I still haven't watched a popular YT guy/group do well at an FPS.

I think this covers both the "faking it for views" and the "ohmygod these guys aren't up to my standards of D- Dark Souls play, uuuuuugh" bases.

I thought I'd never see that game again. The main game I used to own was German, the expansions Dutch, it´s a lot of fun seeing/hearing the English version now. Way back then I was a single-digit old tyke visiting some family friends who ended up gifting me the game cause I had more fun toying with the figures than they had playing the actual game. Years later I actually played the game but I think either the German version was different or I just made up rules. I never understood what the hell we were supposed to to do when a player ended up dying. drat that brings back memories.
