Sounds like a good way to put any British company involved in security hardware out of business pretty fast.
Yeah, that was my exact same thoughts about the encryption thing as previously proposed.

Let's say that person A is a coordinator for vulnerable people at a charity, and persons B are their care workers who do site visits, and company C is their secure text message provider.
A wants a way of communicating with B without anybody without the requisite background checks being able to access it, for obvious reasons. Company C says 'sure, we can do that'.

By my understanding under that draft, if C was in the UK they would no longer be able to comply with that agreement, because they'd have to keep the keys on site in case the police had a warrant to wiretap, which would also allow a disgruntled employee, resident pederast, etc. potential access.
If C was outside the UK, A and B would be able to continue to communicate securely, and if the police had a legitimate warrant they could just go to A (or B) and compel them to provide their keys/password.

So all it does is puts UK businesses at a disadvantage without providing any security advantage.

Party of business.

For those with a curious bent that first long pornhub link points to this (:nws: obviously)

That sort of gives a false impression though, because that's a very limited (and hyperactive) history that doesn't really give much away, in specifics at least.

Like with the HIV example, you can't tell what the person actually looked for on the NHS site, but if their next visited site is one of the HIV-related support or charity sites linked on the NHS page, it doesn't take a lot of work to see what a site like bodyandsoulcharity.org is about, check the NHS pages about HIV, and see that the site was linked from the page about diagnosing the disease. Or if they went to Wikipedia, and then their next site is related to HIV and is cited in the HIV wiki page.

On their own, those related sites could just show an interest in the disease or in charity. But as a chain leading back to the NHS site, with a connection to the 'diagnosing HIV' page, it paints a picture about that person, information that they might really want to keep private. And metadata can get really specific about your activity - even if you don't have the actual URL the person visited, you could still have the domain name, the amount of data transmitted from that server, the other domains that were accessed (say for images contained on the page) and the amount of data they supplied. With that kind of information, it's definitely possible to identify which page on the server matches the metadata 'fingerprint' the user's activity generated

You can't just go on a website and order a firearm though (not even an air rifle any more). You have to pay and have it delivered to a licensed dealer, then go to the dealer and present all your paperwork and pay them a processing fee on top. In reality the person following that train of thought is going to browse the guns for a while, look at the shipping requirements, and then do something else. Maybe something bad like hanging themselves, maybe something good like having a nice bath.

And if it's the bad case, they'll have already done it by the time you've started keeping tabs. Especially given what they managed to do in 5 minutes. :flashfap:

Given the amount of online shopping that people now do this basically amounts to "we'll keep a record of all the books you've read and all the programs you've watched for the last year" which is pleasantly dystopian.

edit: oh and we'll keep a record of all the letters you've written and received in the past 12 months. You know. Just in case.

Cost of upgrading and retraining I guess. I managed and independent shop that was a Centra franchise and had a DOS based back-office, Centra suggested updating it many times but the franchisees refused as it worked fine and they didn't have to deal with training. It was actually the most robust retail back office system I've ever used and never crashed possibly because it was so simple. I haven't worked for them in about 3 and a half years now but I suspect and hope it hasn't been updated.

You don't have to 8e a good person to 8e a hero.
The EFF have the best takedown of the "it's just metadata" argument:

quote:

  • They know you rang a phone sex service at 2:24 am and spoke for 18 minutes. But they don't know what you talked about.
  • They know you called the suicide prevention hotline from the Golden Gate Bridge. But the topic of the call remains a secret.
  • They know you spoke with an HIV testing service, then your doctor, then your health insurance company in the same hour. But they don't know what was discussed.
  • They know you received a call from the local NRA office while it was having a campaign against gun legislation, and then called your senators and congressional representatives immediately after. But the content of those calls remains safe from government intrusion.
  • They know you called a gynecologist, spoke for a half hour, and then called the local Planned Parenthood's number later that day. But nobody knows what you spoke about.

I don't know, I've never used it but it's basically the same thing they have on the telxon guns I think, but when you load it on a normal terminal with a monitor, it shows up green and black.

I would hope it has a mouse interface because I can't imagine many of the managers being able to use it otherwise.

Also, somewhat oddly, I think the telxon guns run windows 97 or something on the backend because it loads up a tiny pixellated desktop with a copy of word on it before it logs into the stock system.

The system at Amazon worked like this - the sorting stations had a Unix terminal that just SSHed into a central database machine and then drew comedy-huge ASCII arrows telling you where to put the item you just scanned.
