Yeah, in four years time voters are really going to think back to that time the NDP leader said a thing about the size of JT's cabinet. What an idiot! This moment will be at the top of their minds for sure.

I was initially really surprised Leslie wasn't picked for Defence, but after reading Najjan's bio I think it's a great idea. Also, if Kent Hehr is as visible and personable as a minister as he was on the campaign trail I think he'll be liked a lot by veterans.

I know he's a bit of a Liberal insider but I think McCallum is a good choice for immigration minister. I remember reading this back in June. He does seem to care a lot about immigration issues.

I laughed at the response I heard (second hand) from someone close to Leslie. There is a definite "military elite" in this country. And they are white. It'll be interesting to see what impact the new guy has. It he's implementing Leslie's plan anyway... He was (in addition to being actual military) a full time reservist if I'm not mistaken, something Leslie recommended mostly doing away with.

PT6A's right, Mulcair's grasping at straws. I can see how the NDP are in no hurry to replace him, and he is very, very good at Not Necessarily An Answer Period, but I don't see a future where he is the leader of this party and they are effective at anything but splitting votes.

The opposition's job is to hold the government to account and push its policy goals. Ergo, actual criticism of policy based on arguments is not "whiny." Complaining about how the cabinet is slightly large is not that.

Trudeau promised a small cabinet and ended up naming a still pretty large one. That's worth pointing out. You're just mad that big mean old Mulcair tried to ruin your special day. And/or you'll take any opportunity to reiterate for the hundredth time your dislike of him.

THC posted:It's perfectly legitimate to say Trudeau promised a small cabinet and gave us a still pretty large one. You're just mad that big mean old Mulcair tried to ruin your special day. Yes, but it would be customary to provide some reason as to why Trudeau changing his mind on cabinet size is a negative thing. Politicians being able and willing to change their mind in the face of compelling reasons is something to be encouraged, not criticized. Unless you're some sort of ideologue or partisan.... oh, wait...

Do you think a single person voted on the issue of cabinet size? He probably made the promise because he didn't expect to win so many seats, now that he has it would be silly to waste the talent. Complaining about it absolutely comes across as grasping at straws and hyper-partisan.

But under our system there's nothing to stop a majority government from doing what it wants beyond public outcry or the senate stalling something for a little while. So it's entirely on Trudeau to get things done.
