All this lathe talk is reminding me of a thing that happened when I was at school.

(5 years ago, goddamn)

We were doing something on the lathe and the lathe operator at the time wasn't wearing any face gear. So, I told him to stop the lathe, got him a full face mask and carried on. I didn't need one as I felt that I was out of any potential blast radius.

So, guess what happens? About two minutes later, he overcooks it, and explodes the bit. Quite literally (okay, perhaps a small fragment was left in situ) all of the bit ends up hitting him, square on the face shield.

If I hadn't have given him that mask, he would have most likely been blinded.

Anyway that's my H&S story hope you enjoyed it

I think fissile quantities of material blanket apply to radioactive placarding so first responders can tell "hey stupid, this could go from fine to very badly very quickly' without a nuclear expert on hand.

Although I could probably believe the conspriacy theorists who would say the gubmint is passing off nuclear bombs as explosives Class 1 div 1/2/3, which is about as specific as I can get from the resolution of a cell phone camera.

e. But the main reason I'd be skeptical is that the ERG responses for Explosives Class 1 div 1/2/3 don't have any entries with a response that would be appropriate to a nuclear weapon, between local response (like if its on fire, you now have a fallout concern) or running it up the flagpole to someone who could tell the appropriate people "hey something nuclear just went off the road."

See, that's why I I was trying to keep an open mind, because nothing says government bureaucracy like excusing yourself from announcing the nuclear part of a cargo that could go really wrong because national security and we'll let you know when you need to know, while robotically applying a conventional explosives placard just in case.

Drain cleaners normally contain sodium hydroxide aka lye and sometimes bleach. Some powdered versions even contain aluminium filings because they react exothermic when activated, which helps cleaning.
Put some ointment on your chemical burn and that's it.

I think the idea is that the military will know about an accident almost immediately and have their own responders on scene before a civilian responder would need know the difference between "explosives" and "explosives and radioactive materials" so the slim increase in safety they would gain by placarding the plutonium is more than offset by the added danger of advertising "Nuclear Bomb" to psychos and terrorists.

Besides, the high explosives are really the more immediately dangerous part. If I see a burning semi with a "high explosives" placard on it, I'm not going to stand any further away if it also said their were radioactive materials on board.

I guess my point is if their attitude is "we're handling it" the explosive placard isn't needed either. They are already rightly abandoning abandoning security by obscurity by assigning the escort so I don't know how its any more advertising.

A nuclear placard is less "where is the response team staging" and more about "what should people be doing arbitrarily far downwind"

None of this probably really matters outside of a Clancy-esque fictionalization, it just looks really strange to go halfway with it.

I don't know, that convoy could be transporting a bunch of things that aren't as exciting as nuclear warheads, and if the whole thing gets flattened by a meteor I'd still rather know not to run towards the wreckage to look for survivors during the minute it takes the response team to arrive (because it might explode, not due to an increased cancer risk if I'm downwind).

According to the Cold War thread in TFR, these convoys are only used for local-ish transport though, and cross-country shipments get armored but non-descript Peterbuilts.

iyaayas01 posted:

That's the open "haul the full up missile from the base to the silo with a no-poo poo military convoy the whole way" trailer. It's just used for transporting from base to the silo or vice versa, not cross-country...which can still be a significant distance depending on which missile field they're in and what silo they're going to.

What these guys use to ship weapons/components cross-country is significantly lower key.
