Is there precedent for any app working that way yet? Plex doesn't really count since it uses its own software on the media server. Since the iTunes Home Sharing infrastructure is already built into the ATV, I'm wondering if 3rd party players can piggyback off that.

I'm confused a bit by what you're asking.

I don't think Home Sharing is going to be opened up at all, especially since you need your Apple credentials to make it work.

But if you've already got iTunes managing your content, I would presume you've got either iTunes managing the library of files or the files already organized manually. Either way, the files are already organized for easy indexing by a 3rd party server software.

So wouldn't pointing Plex or Air Video to look for files in your iTunes Media directory already accomplish what you're attempting to do?

Its be cool if people i share my plex library with could sync a movie on a thursday, so that we are not all competing for bandwidth on a feiday night.

If syncing is not an option, ill be content with the smaller atv.

I only plan on using it for HBO Go and Plex, so will probably get the smaller storage.

Just wondering if we'll have more options for music players using our shared iTunes library. Like how you can get different music apps for your iPhone if you don't care for Music.app, or different poscast apps if you don't like Podcasts.app.

Does anyone know if AirPlay creates an ad hoc network between the AppleTV and an iPhone/iPad? If so, you could sync to your phone, and AirPlay to your AppleTV without worrying about internet conditions. I don't think you can sync to the AppleTV, but maybe I missed that setting somewhere.

Apparently I can't use the Plex app without a Plex account. Not disappointed I paid for SimpleX now.

Is anyone else unable to wake their ATV from screensaver mode by pressing the play/pause button? WTF.

Also, if anyone else has set up a third-party IR remote, do the play/pause/fw/rw buttons actually do anything for you? Mine don't, which makes me wonder why the hell the ATV4 offers to set them up at all (they worked fine with the 3rd gen).

I got the 64, since you can't change your mind later... But that said, I can't even imagine using up 32 at this point, so if you don't want to spend the extra money, don't.

And for the person who asked like a week ago whether the ATV4 syncs more than a hundred pics or so for the screensaver: no, it's just as bad as the previous model. :argh:

Sorry, guy.
I'm getting a fair bit of buffering/loading using Simplex and Plex. It had me at 1080p / 20mbps.

Is that like, too high or something? I set it to 1080p / 12 just now which *seems* fine so far... (Not sure if it's my mind but the sound feels a little flatter...?)

Anyone else experiencing this or have insight on settings? My network is ample, etc...

[Ed] even at /12 it's buffering. Didn't have issues with plexconnect.

Do you have any issues with Netflix or Hulu or HBO or the like? I have gotten random errors and buffering in just about every app so far despite my good connection; maybe once or twice a day on average. Could be a lower-level problem. OTOH it hasn't happened to me in SimpleX yet.

I still don't understand the sizes of apps. Some people are saying the biggest app they've gotten in 200MB. At that rate, I'd need 320 apps to fill up 64 GB of space. It seems plausible on a phone, but I can't even begin to imagine what the hell is being done on an ATV to fill that space.

200 MB is the maximum file size of the initial download. That said, developers can, after the initial install, download up to 2 GB of data to your Apple TV (and are given 20 GB of iCloud space per app). Obviously, this will largely be limited to games, so if you're not expecting to play a lot of those, you probably won't run into space constraints. Even then, tvOS is supposed to actively delete code slices from things that haven't been used in awhile if you're running out of space.

Have had some major remote problems today. Twice today, like 8 hours apart, the remote has basically frozen. While its frozen the white light on the actual AppleTV is off, and my home theater volume randomly goes up and down, often all the way down to zero. During this time the video keeps playing on the screen and I can't do anything at all until the remote reconnects.

Out of nowhere, my ATV4 won't play video from any streaming service. It will go through all the menus and splash screens fine, but once I start to play, all I get is audio.

Showtime gave me an HDMI error, but not sure where all this is coming from.

I've tried restarting the TV and ATV, and unplugging and replugging and trying different HDMI ports. Anything else to check?

You can't download a movie to the AppleTV.

You could take your laptop, download the video to iTunes (or Plex media server) and then use an ad-hoc network between ATV and server to play it.

Has anyone had issues with playback 'freezing' but audio keeps going? Last night I was trying to watch Casino Royale from the iTunes store and 5 times the video would freeze, and audio would continue. Eventually we'd get "An error has occurred loading this content"... and I'm wondering if it is ATV or the stream, or cable. I've not seen that behavior before.

Yes because it's 10x faster in every way than the old ATV and scrubbing through video is so much easier it's insane. Plus the tech in the old ATV is almost 5 years old at this point.

I'm probably only using mine for AirPlay, Netflix, HBO, FXNow and a few other apps and there's no way I would go back to my 3. The 4 is so much more sleek and smooth in the interface and switching and opening apps is lightning fast.

Counterpoint: I really haven't noticed any huge speed gains over my ATV3 as far as Netflix and Youtube go. I mean maybe they're there, but the UI seems just as usable to me. In fact, the Youtube experience was still better for me on my ATV3 since there's some weird bug where I can't log into the new YouTube app on ATV4.

It's really nice being able to task-switch between things. Like if I'm watching NHL and I want to go youtube something I'll just click the TV icon twice and switch to that. I wouldn't be surprised if they incorporated some kind of PinP technology into tvOS at some point too.

But for base functionality I probably wouldn't pay a $200 premium upgrade from tech I already owned.

edit: $200 in Canada, $150 or whatever in real people money.

I think IuniusBrutus is choosing between buying v3 or v4 right now, so it's an $80 premium.

And yes, I'd pay $80 just for better back/forward scrubbing. It was so goddamn painful on previous ATVs. Want to get to a scene late in a movie? *click click click* *wait 70 seconds*

Man I need to put a sticker on this remote. Half the time in a dim room I have it upside down. The other 25% of the time I graze the scrubber trying to pause/play/resume. The last 25% of the time I long press the home button to sleep it and when clicking on sleep it cycles down to cancel.

What I'm saying is it's loving sensitive for a remote that looks the same no matter how you grab it...

When a Netflix show finishes, is there any way to actually watch the credits in full as opposed to waiting for the "Next episode" countdown? I know there's a Netflix setting to disable the "next episode" thing, but on ATV 3 it did the countdown but gave you the option to go back to the episode.

If not, I hope that's something they fix in the future, along with restoring the "Similar shows" listing and letting me browse my queue with the full screen rather than just one row.

EDIT: Also, is there no longer any "next chapter" button on the remote? Clicking the right side of the pad just jumps forward 10 seconds, and holding it just fast forwards.
