There's a very good chance that Carson is experiencing the same thing as Brian Williams with regard to his childhood. Memory is not static - it's a living, breathing thing that can change every time you recall a memory. It may be that Carson is 100% certain he had this violent childhood when he really didn't. I have no loving clue on the pyramid thing though.

Ben Carson doesn't understand why gay people would ever want to order food from a christian restaurant or baker, because shouldn't gays have the reasonable fear that the christian owners would try to poison them to death? It's just common sense, gay people, come on. *91% of likely republican primary voters nod in agreement with this folksy, sagely wisdom*

Maybe it happened, maybe it didn't, but you can infer his values from the story and decide whether you want to vote for a person who considers that the key experience of their life. The pyramids stuff does matter because it shows how he takes in new information and how willing he is to change his mind when confronted with evidence that his knowledge is lacking. Also, it's really funny.

Ben Carson, GOP frontrunner: -attacked his mother with a hammer and his friend Bob with a knife -may not have actually done these things, as his friends think he was a nerd -has said that the guy wasn't Bob -has said that it was a cousin, not a friend -believes Joseph directed the construction of the pyramids as granaries, even though this is abiblical -called the Big Bang a "fairy tale" -believes in a six-day creation -said that Darwin was influenced by Satan -believes Lucy was just a deformed human -calls global warming 'irrelevant' -believes there are numerous vaccines that do nothing -believes that pediatricians believe there are too many vaccines -wants to outlaw abortion even in the case of rape or incest -believes abortion is directed toward controlling black populations -believes women who get abortions are like slave owners -believes Obamacare is the worst thing since slavery -believes Obamacare is a form of slavery -said he was worried that political polarization could lead to martial law and the cancellation of the 2016 elections -said we are living in a "gestapo" age -suggested that the 'control of thought, control of speech' going on could lead to a Hitler-like figure in the USA -proposed controlling thought and speech on college campuses through the Dept. of Education -said Muslims shouldn't be president because as president they would have to reject the tenets of Islam -opposes nominating Muslims as judges for similar reasons -says all Muslim nations discriminate against gays/women/other religions -believes that there is no racism; children just need to understand that they have to get a good education -believes that becoming gay is a choice because men come out of prison gay -said that Congress should remove judges who rule in favor of gay rights -compared gay rights to pedophilia and bestiality -said that marriage equality was a Marxist plot -said that there should be no such thing as war crimes because the object is to win -said that Obama intentionally allows in more immigrants because they vote Democratic -said that people should rush gunmen -claims that when he was held up in a fast food store, he directed the gunman toward the cashier -probably lied about that too -said that the Holocaust was able to happen because the Nazis took away guns from the Jews -believes Ukraine gave up its nuclear stockpile under the assumption that we would defend them from Russia -proposes a flat tax based on "tithing" of 10, then 15% -refuses to address the fact that this would lead to huge budget deficits -claims that no founding fathers had elected experience; later changes this to the paradoxical 'no federal elected experience' -is paid to endorse a phony nutritional supplement -says he has no association with said nutritional supplement -said Mahmoud Abbas, Ali Khamanei, and Vladimir Putin all met and hung out in their Moscow college days, but refuses to name his source -said that most students coming out of an AP US History course would want to sign up with ISIS -explained the genocide of American Indians, internment of Japanese citizens, and atomic bombings in WWII by saying "We're people, and all people make mistakes" What am I missing? I have a question in regards to the whole "gotcha media" everyone seems to be throwing out when they get called out on their crazy conspiracy theories / getting asked tough questions. Is this a newer thing? I remember last election cycle Sarah Palin blaming the media for calling her out on her stupid bullshit i.e. "I read lots of magazines but I can't name any / I can see Russia from my house, etc" and crying that the LIBERAL media was trying to make her look bad. And we're seeing a full on assault on the media this time around not only in regards to individual candidates (Carson, Trump) but with the whole debate process. Did this happen in elections prior and is just par for the course by now or is this a newer thing that's coming about in recent cycles?

Tithing is basically just a tax by an organized religion. I think in the old testament it was a tenth, but no doubt it has varied across the millenia. Also, the state always had its own taxes, even in ancient Israel, so it wasn't like tithing was the only tax people paid. Mormons still have it, but most other religions have to rely on voluntary contributions or their extensive financial holdings or state support.

It's not a flat tax in Genesis 28:20-22. quote:20 And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on, The Church conveniently substituted giving a tenth of everything to God for giving a tenth of everything to the Church.

That's the way it seemed to me, Trump is absolutely right when he attacks Carson, but from an electoral point of view it might not have been such a good move. He needs to be thinking about what will happen to the insane evangelical voting bloc as soon as Carson slips into a full coma and drops out of the race. He might still benefit from the fact that Jeb and Rubio are both papists.

Tithe literally means tenth and was originally paid in kind instead of cash and was the closest thing to a standard tax rate that ever existed in the near east. In western Christianity it eventually evolved to being one tenth of everything you owned by the medieval era, which was known by everyone to be literally impossible to pay without starving for non-nobles. So, the church would be able to legally carry off pretty much whatever they wanted when you died as payment for what you had to be holding back. Edit: Early Christianity didn't really have it as an institution, given how it was completely decentralized and all. Mostly it relied entirely off charity.

Bryter posted:Because they can't debate based on facts, so attacking the people who report the facts is their only real response when cornered. Yeeup. Attacking the media has always been a thing but it's really escalates over the past twenty years or so. Partly this is because of right wing media like Rush and Fox attacking their mainstream competition ("don't listen to the liberal media, only listen to me"), but the curve has gone vertical in the past few years as Republicans got increasingly divorced from reality. In Carson and Palin's case, I suspect they are both so divorced from reality that they honestly interpret reality-based questioning as an unfair personal attack.
