CodfishCartographer posted:As someone who knows nothing about computers, is what they’re saying impossible? Aka a RAM stick that plugs into USB. It sounds like something that makes sense at a very, very surface level, but I assume it’s not that easy or it would have been done by now. No. Memory is memory. Your computer already has a pagefile that is sitting on the hdd that supplements your RAM. Using a USB drive to add to the pagefile isn't new or anything, and Windows has supported it for a while. The problem is speed and latency. Pagefiles higher overhead than RAM, so it won't provide as much of a performance increase.

Welp. I guess the lesson is people don’t understand how computers work, and if you dress something up in a way that kind of makes sense and make it look minimalistic and slap a leaf logo on it, you can get it kickstarted.

They even promised lower energy usage- somehow- that's not how ram works.

Phanatic posted:It's been done by now. It's entirely standard. Using flash storage as virtual ram/swapfile/cache is way faster than using conventional hard drive storage for that purpose, and modern OSes have been supporting this on the fly for years; MS started officially supporting it in Vista. Problem is, it makes less and less difference the more real RAM you have, and it provides no benefit whatsoever if you're using a solid-state hard drive. The other thing is that it's going to be nowhere near as fast as anything you can plug into your motherboard, like a SATA cable or a PCI Express card, let alone a RAM stick. I know USB3.0 can get as fast as SATA 6GB/s, but not as consistently as SATA.

Also I don't get the whole kickstarter campaign in the first place, if they have a manufacturer and suppliers already why are they trying to kickstart it? Why not just open a store front online and start selling? This isn't for a prototype or funding to get something, they're just flogging them on kickstarter. I don't get it, ditto on the February 2016 estimated shipping date.

The funny thing about the Kickstarter is that most of the EVE community, including the people involved in Fountain, hate the idea, and I think the only reason it's getting funded is because EVE goons are a cult.

EatinCake posted:This is an amazing solution. I kept reading the pitch hoping to find out this was a means to 'turn-off' your USB port, but no, it's literally a stick that hopes to permanently destroy the port. I've seen this demonstrated when it was some Russian hacker building the thing (and it's likely the same guy trying to monetize his creation) and releasing the plans on the internet and the common conclusion was that this isn't really for doing a data wipe, but vandalizing computers. The original video... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_TidRpVWXBE Motherboard at Vice discusses with a bunch of computer engineers on it's capacities. It will likely destroy the "southbridge" chipset but there's a "remote possibility" it could damage the CPU and hard drive. But, yeah, replacing the entire motherboard along with the CPU is likely what'll happen. But then, since it likely won't wipe the HDD, then it's useless as a data protection measure when the data thieves can just yank the working HDD and plug it into another computer.
