We didn't know any better. I never ran EQ but I did hit FFXI, and that mostly involved sitting in town saying "DRG LF leveling group" for three hours before someone would bite.

They did but young people with too much free time were understandably entranced with the idea of MMOs and thus willingly blinded themselves to the piss poor execution. Rational people did not bother to play MMOs until they evolved out of the player hating stone ages.

Pretty much, I recall giving both EQ and FFXI brief tries when they were knew and gave up on both within a month due to them being intolerable tedious slogs. There's a reason the genre didn't break a million subscribers until WoW hit with a (comparatively) super-casual and well-polished game.

I call bullshit. Smuggler was an advanced class, no way you ground that poo poo out in five.

Is there a generally accepted easiest class to play? I have an Operative at 25 I'm healing with, but she already has like 22 different buttons between the healing, melee, and ranged. I like the game enough, I'd just prefer to have things a little more streamlined.

My favorite was cat-type creatures were suppose to have a speed modifier of +0.1 (i.e. 110%) but instead had a modifier of *0.1 (i.e. 10%). Go to Dantooine I think it was and farm up cat-types for massive amounts of ranged weapon xp and credits. That game was borked at release there were all sorts of exploits and dupes.

Also City of Heroes was the tits and I'll fight anyone who disagrees.

So many bugs. Wasn't there a thing where you could stand inside a creature nest and be invincible, getting xp for killing whatever spawned from it?

And, yes, CoH/CoV was amazing.

6x XP for class and planet quests is a permanent thing now. But XP comes fast and loose from all sources in 4.0

Commando/merc is basically a gun sorcerer/sage, and My sniper has been pretty easy to level.

Yep. Once the PvE got stale me and some friends made a roving gang of Combat Medics who would put entire enemy towns on lockdown by diseasing anything that moved while healing ourselves.

Marksman sniper is simple as hell. Open with Laze Target + Ambush, then use that, Take Down, Followthrough, and Penetrating Blasts on cooldown, and otherwise, use Snipe. That's pretty much it. You don't even have to go into cover, if you can't be bothered; you might want to (and should if you're grouping) as many of your defensive abilities require cover, but when you're levelling solo with a healing companion, you can tank almost anything.

To me, my favorite early MMO story is the AQ launch in WoW. 45 minute queues to get in, hop on a boat, 5 minute loading screen, come back to the boat some how being rendered in the middle of the sky over a mountain range, get disconnected, join 45 minute queue, log in, corpse is 10 zones away and my ghost is at the wrong spirit healer, finally make it to AQ and my game crashes due to the sheer amount of poo poo it's being told to render.

Everyone keeps asking Blizzard when they`re going to do another AQ style launch event and Blizzard`s response has always basically been "We are never going to do that poo poo again."

"Let's do an event that makes everyone go to the same zone at the same time!" Obvious in hindsight, one of the marks in Blizzard's favor is that they learn from blunders like that.

So other than completing all the Companion storylines, is there any purpose to bumping up Influence prior to starting KotFE? Was gonna start it with my Jugg, I think, and play through it first with him since, you know, Wrath.

It wasn't so bad when you were on the raid team doing that content :p

I think EQ had more of an audience of people who were into the more traditional table top RPGs but also liked video games. It wasn't really as main stream as these new ones were. Over time it drew larger crowds but people were actually playing in character early on.

You don't even have to do that, the Companion story quests are automatically unlocked as you progress your class story.

However, more influence makes your companions stronger overall, making the game easier. Gifts actually drop as regular loot now too, and the first several levels of influence come a lot faster.

Yeah, I dumped hours into MMOs, entire days, doing nothing when I was like sixteen in the early 2000s. Sitting around for twenty minutes for a taxi in SWG, just dumb poo poo.

Most classes have about five abilities you need for soloing through the game. All the rest of the abilities are situationaly useful. That doesn't mean those skills are worthless, just that they aren't that useful while leveling, but they can become useful in different contexts.

For example, being able to stealth out of a fight and rez a tank is a worthless skill while solo, but great when running ops.

I just want to point out that using your stronghold to travel to fleet and your ship is a subscriber only thing. For f2p and preferred, you can either go back to where you came from, or to the planet your house is on. Not sure if it's the same with guild ship, but I would assume so. You can tell easily if the fleet and ship buttons is framed in gold. It's really dumb.

So travel to starship and cooldown reductions is a good thing to pick for preferred players if the cooldown goes down enough.

Even for rotations that are ranked 6/10 or higher on dulfy for your basic solo adventures you barely need to bother, especially since companions are now stupidly powerful even at level 1.

For example, Overload is a Sorc ability that's pretty useless but fun as hell for being able to knock enemies off ledges to their death.

Is there a way to edit the in-game config out of game? I can't get the drat game to run. Launcher comes up fine, I'm fully patched. When I hit PLAY it changes my screen resolution to something real tiny, and SWTOR is kinda off to the left of the screen. On the start bar, when I hover over SWTOR, the preview shows a long vertical slit, like the resolution is set at something crazy weird. Any ideas here?

Edit: The game appears to be loading in the tiniest window I've ever seen. It's just a small vertical slit on the upper left of my screen. I can clearly see the blue background and the upper and lower gold stripe of the loading screen. This is weird.
