Yeah, seriously, I'm actually interested in that. There are some major unresolved issues in physics, so this could be big.

Relativity is acknowledged to be an imperfect theory, so it's possible that smoothrich may have in fact come up with a superior alternative. I for one would like to hear it.

Relativity works great for big and fast, but doesn't mesh with quantum mechanics (which covers tiny stuff). Fitting the two paradigms into a single framework had been the major goal in physics for a long time.

I should note that I only took physics for half of undergrad before changing majors, so I'm more than a little fuzzy on the details It's mainly the same problems with gravity, as general relativity is itself an alternative theory to gravity. The only problems I can recall off the top of my head are that it doesn't work on a quantum level, and relies on the existence of dark matter and dark energy to get the numbers to work on galactic scale and above. Furthermore, no one has ever successfully combined general relativity and special relativity into a workable unified theory

I know they're theoretically necessary to explain the larger-than-expected gravitational pull of galaxies and why the expansion of the universe is accelerating, respectively, but it's weird that they haven't yet found a way to directly observe them.

Hello Republican primary thread! Quantum and general relativity were created to describe entirely different things and the mathematical structure of both theories is vastly different. Quantum governs the world of the very small, general relativity of the very massive. They both seem to work well enough in their own domains but have problems when attempting to describe very small but very massive things. Trying to get basic concepts like uncertainty crammed inside of space-time curvature generates a lot of non-sense answers! This is not to say either theory is 'wrong'. Newtonian gravity did a great job for hundreds of years and is still used as it describes the human scale world very well. Its at the boundaries of each theory where things have to be refined.

Phlegmish posted:A very small but very massive thing...such as the singularity at the core of a black hole? Indeed. Singularity is a mathematical term used in this case to mean things like density and curvature go to infinity - which they in all likelihood do not, its just our theories do not accurately explain what happens. I mean - Man, in his unlimited arrogance, is attempting to re-write God's law through profane symbols. This is just further proof of the infallibility of Him and His word. Vote Carson 2016.
