True it does, but at the same time it helps prevent unwinnable save states. Especially since unless you are playing on an emulator you pretty much only have one save file to work with.

Time for another vote!

We now have a permanent Knight for each class. However, there are some good Knights in our ranks that deserve to stick around, and they can help our main Knights conserve a little Vitality by subbing in.

:siren:We are going to vote on second stringers:siren:

We’re voting on a backup Duelist and Priestess this round! Here is the usual spiel about voting:

quote:

Click here for an explanation of the vitality growth charts:
http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3680784&userid=37611&perpage=40&pagenumber=2#post441749251

Reading that is optional, though, because:

We can't get screwed by a bad pick. I'm only playing on Normal; we have room for error. If by some act of god I find myself in a corner, there is always going to be another knight I just recruited and can use. So really, I want us to pick our knight by his/her character attributes. Pick the one you want to see more Pause Talks from, or the one with the portrait you like best, or flip a coin.

:siren:One new consideration you might want to take into account::siren:
:siren:It’s actually relevant this time!!:siren:
You might want to make sure our new Knight is a different elemental affinity than our permanent one. The elemental affinity determines which element weapon that knight can overcharge. So picking a knight with a different affinity than our main knight will provide a little variety, and give me a few more options with battles.

Or don’t worry about it! It’s not a huge deal!

Having said that, let’s look at our contestants:

Our permanent Duelist is Hilgard, elemental affinity: Sanctity

Erica Val Eh Sokolov of the 11th Order

“My pride is born of my knighthood, not my social standing.”
Class: Duelist
Atlus.com says this of Erica:
“A noble woman who became a knight, despising the idea of treating the upper-crust society any differently than the working class. She works to restore the country.”
The Tome of Lost Souls says this:
Celestial Fencer
"She was born into nobility but quickly learned to hate class distinctions and prejudice. Once day, Erica would like to be a housewife and take care of a family, but she feels compelled to serve her kingdom as a knight. She trained alongside Seriee, and has taken it upon herself to look after Frances."

Erica gossiping with fellow knights. She is breaking the news of Prince Nordich’s fiancée.

Lillian I. Amnoble 4th Order

“I’ve never had many friends.”
Class: Duelist
Atlus.com says this of Lillian:
”Though not much of a knight in attitude, she is devoted to her kingdom and the people within it. She is good friends with Annalot, wishing her success in her prayers.”
The Tome of Lost Souls says this:
Elegant Force
”Although responsible and highly capable, Lillian much prefers the social aspects of knighthood. She loves looking after children and playing games with them, and she wishes she could spend more time with her childhood friend, Annalot.”

While trying to figure out why no messengers have gotten through, the knights voice their suspicions that someone is intentionally interfering. Lillian suggests sending multiple knights out next time so that maybe one of them could escape and either get through or fall back. She then volunteers to go herself.

Johanna W. Swift of the 2nd Order

Class: Duelist
Atlus.com say this of Johanna:
No entry!
The Tome of Lost Souls says:
Diamond Cutter
“A beautiful, young knight, she seems frail and naïve to the men around her. Consequently, many of the knights feel an extra need to protect her. Aside from being notoriously bad at cooking, Johanna’s biggest weakness is sweet talk, and she often finds herself falling for the wrong kind of man. Because of this, Meryl tries to look out for her. Johanna’s best friend is Diora, even though the two have seemingly opposite personalities.”

Johanna, looking death in the face at Fort Gerhard; the monsters are coming. Same flashback as Meryl.

Oryze Vid Eh Dapho of the 9th Order

”I want to become strong, like Seriee…”
Class: Duelist
Atlus.com say this of Oryze:
”Becoming a knight at the age of 15, she is seen as a promising candidate for greatness under the tutelage of Granitz. However, she lacks experience.”
The Tome of Lost Souls says:
Chirping Sparrow
“She is currently the youngest knight in the kingdom, and all her comrades are amazed by her. In truth, she is much more immature than people realize she is, and she is still very naïve about the world around her. Professionally, she idolizes Seriee and hopes to be as skilled as her one day.”

Alive just outside Aventheim Castle, catching a glimpse of Melissa.

Caline Rheia Dickson of the 7th Order

”Only a fool would concern himself with my fate…”
Class: Duelist
Atlus.com say this of Caline:
”A realist of a knight, she is often perceived as cold, but proper. She has little faith in humanity and its penchant for war.”
The Tome of Lost Souls says:
Garnet Zephyr
“Although she is a cold realist who is very direct with her choice of words, Caline’s heart is filled with an intense loneliness and a hatred for war. Much of her day is spent criticizing Werner and Nina, whom she views as weak. It is only around Theonil that she feels comfortable letting her guard down.”

Caline gossiping about Yelma. Same flashback as Dahlia

Atkasia N. Velden of the 5th Order

”Neredo has been a problem since she was a child.”
Class: Duelist
Atlus.com say this of Atkasia:
”The slightly more mature half of the two sisters. She is stern with both herself and others.”
The Tome of Lost Souls says:
Scarlet Rage
“She is Neredo’s older and more mature sister. Atkasia can be just as brash and cocky as her younger sister, but she has enough self-reflection to control herself. Nevertheless, she and her sister still argue with each other like young children, and it can upset their comrades, especially Lakshmi.”

Atkasia, trying to talk Morozof out of greeting his own death

Seriee D. Colaine of the 5th Order

”I hone my skill with a sword every day. I will lose to no one.”
Class: Duelist
Atlus.com say this of Seriee:
”Throwing aside any notion of feminine social expectations, Seriee became a master of the sword. Often mistaken for a man, she is not to be trifled with.”
The Tome of Lost Souls says:
Graceful Brute
“Having been hardened by battle, Seriee has forsaken her softer, feminine side and devoted her life to studying the sword. Unfortunately, because of this, she is often mistaken for a man. Seriee is very stubborn and does not like relying on others, and this can make her comrades worry at times. She has a friendly rivalry with Erica.”

Seriee, unwittingly escorting Gunther to his betrayal.

Our permanent Priestess is Lyzz, elemental affinity: Sanctity

Simone Alexei of the 2nd Order

Class: Priestess
Atlus.com says this of Simone:
No entry!
The Tome of Lost Souls says this:
Ivory Disciple
”Her gentle, caring, motherly personality has garnered her immense popularity among her peers. From time to time, she acts as a fortuneteller, and many consider her readings to be very accurate. She and Cress have been very close since the two entered knighthood, and Simone trusts her with her deepest secrets.”

Simone, volunteering to run as a messenger, since none of the regular ones are making it through

Meryl U. Shretter of the 2nd Order

“You have my support, even if from the shadows.”
Class: Priestess
Atlus.com says this of Meryl:
“A caring, motherly woman who watches over her order. She is a direct subordinate of Grand Marshal Gunther, and often speaks highly of him.”
The Tome of Lost Souls says:
Ardent Prayer
“She is an angelic, motherly Priestess who loves all the knights equally, and her compassion and kind words have earned her a spot in the hearts of her comrades. She works closely with Gunther and has great faith that Rolf will one day be worthy to follow in his shoes.”

Meryl praying over her fellow cornered knights before the monsters descend. Same scene as Johanna’s flashback

Anette Asim Straud of the 7th Order

”Do I really look so unreliable?”
Class: Priestess
Atlus.com say this of Anette:
A low-ranking priestess who looks much younger than her age, and is often mistaken for a child. She furthers this misconception with her love of sweets.
The Tome of Lost Souls says:
Blazing Shepherd
”Because she looks and acts extremely young, she is constantly underestimated by the people around her. Her uncle, Donnel, is constantly worried about her and thinks she needs someone to watch over her at all times. Anette is secretly jealous of Misleen, whom she feels is prettier and more talented.”

Anette, wondering about the thief in the castle (AKA Maria, stealing the King’s soul)

Dahlia E. Laverly of the 6th Order

”People think I have a hard time staying on topic…”
Class: Priestess
Atlus.com say this of Dahlia:
”She is very emotional and talkative; her words and mannerisms give others the impression that she has not yet reached maturity.”
The Tome of Lost Souls says:
Gentle Tide
“Perhaps afraid of silence, Dahlia constantly feels the need to talk. She tries her best to lighten people’s moods and be social, but unfortunately, her comrades are often irritated by how talkative she is. In formal situations, she gets nervous easily and usually resorts to telling jokes that no one but her seems to understand.”

Dahlia complaining about the situation at the castle. The King is off on his Kingdom Tour; while he’s been away Capehorn promoted Yelma. The decision is unpopular with the knights.

Rosa Shis Proias of the 3rd Order

”Nobody suspected I would become a priestess...”
Class: Priestess
Atlus.com say this of Rosa:
”A kind woman who watched over Piche like an older sister. Being in the 3rd Order, she quickly becomes confused as to her role in the grand scheme of things...”
The Tome of Lost Souls says:
Shining Mystic
“Always the optimist, she finds no greater joy than making other people happy. Sometimes, this means going beyond the call of duty or even potentially jeopardizing the mission. Nevertheless, she follows her heard in everything she does. Rosa watches over Piche like a child and treats her like family.”

Rosa, reporting in to Capehorn about the death of Gunther. She is a member of the 3rd Order, which is Capehorn’s Order. Aquina, Leonil, and Yelma are (were) members as well.

Those are the candidates. Once again, are the rules:

Two votes per poster. One for a Duelsist, one for a Priestess.
Put your votes in bold please
You can vote for "I don't like these duelists/priestesses, let's wait until we recruit more"
In the event of a tie or if "I don't like these duelilsts/priestesses" wins, we will table the vote until the next duelist or priestess is recruited, and try again. Any duelist/priestess that received a vote will be spared from Transoul until the next vote.
The polls close next time I post a video. So in a few days, hopefully!

Good luck ladies! Any knight that does not make the cut will be subject to Transoul. Also, I'd like to thank you guys for voting; it's made playing through the game more fun, and the knights feel more personal to me :)

Interesting that there are no new knights for this fight. Capehorn was smart enough not to have anyone killed in his office. Presumably for evidence reasons, but now it's pulling double duty in not giving you more spirit warriors to fight him with. I wonder how it would go if you came into this fight having exhausted your supply of knights somehow. Would Maria have enough juice to down the cardinal by herself? Somehow I doubt 7.77 Vit could ever down a boss.

The Cardinal is friggen crafty. In the last video I talked a little about the Prince slowly deducing "maybe Capehorn had something to do with my father's death." We know that Capehorn was pretending to support the Prince in inheriting rule of the land, and in fact the night before this flashback was the night Gunther got tricked into putting on the cursed armor. Meantime we've seen other flashbacks where knights have mentioned "anyone close to the king has disappeared" but it seems as though it was too late before anyone noticed. I don't like Capehorn and I'll probably call him a lot of names in the next video, but I have to give him credit: he's smart.

And yeah, as Annointed has mentioned, the game will give you generics of each class, and they will leave your army once you've recruited a replacement for them.

Finally, I never noticed the boss naming scheme, that's interesting.

Yeah, her Loyalty gets reset after she gets Ancardia, since the game now considers her a different character with the staff. However, the only thing I know that Loyalty affects is Transouling, and Maria can't be transouled anyway.

The Unknown Affiliation simply means that she isn't part of any order of the knights. Although HaroldofTheRock can't get her with his setup, Pamela also has an Unknown Affiliation.

A bit sad to see him just lose, I was hoping he'd have something fun up his sleeve to make Z-dude's life difficult, but oh well, I suppose this is mostly heading into the realms of godly power and there's not much normal humans can accomplish at that stage. Even if she could (I don't remember - in my recent run of the game, I went for an ending where she didn't find the staff, and none of the other routes give you Ancardia to play with), it would likely still give off the same skill. This is because is it based off of the Angelic Thunder attack that Marietta used in Riviera and Yggdra Union.

Here's her story, from what I've gathered by playing around with her. Bear in mind there are two factors that have changed her, the Ancardia and the fact that we found a key item for her. The Ancardia changed her base attacks, and the key item unlocked her Ex-Skill.

With the Ancardia (and key item), she can Ex-Skill any weapon used in Law Phase. Any weapon. It doesn't need to have overcharge ability.
She does a different Ex-Skill move depending on the elemental affinity of the weapon.
Furthermore, with the Ancardia, if she's not doing an Ex-Skill, she will still overcharge any weapon, regardless if the weapon actually has the ability to overcharge. The attack will cost her 1 vitality and will lock that weapon out the rest of the round. That's now her base attack, so your choices are either overcharge it or Ex-Skill it.
Her attack in Law Phase (when not Ex-Skill, and therefore an overcharge) is always a gram. It covers a larger area than usual but that doesn't change the fact that it's a friggen gram.
She still moves around in Chaos Phase.

Without Ancardia (but with the key item), she can Ex-Skill any weapon used in Chaos Phase. I bet it doesn't need the ability to overcharge but I can't confirm. I believe her base attacks are the same though, so a sword swipe in Law Phase and a sword piledriver in Chaos Phase.

She is quite violent.

Check out the OP, I've been updating it with each Scene and noting the boss fights. If we say that 16 scenes make up 33% of the game (there's a total of 47 Scenes iirc), we can see there was only three boss fights during the first third. Going into the last third of the game, there are 7 bosses left. I think they wanted the player to have ample time to figure out the mechanics before pressing them too hard with bosses.

Or don’t worry about it! It’s not a huge deal!

Having said that, let’s look at our contestants:

Our permanent Wizard is Freiber, elemental affinity: neutral

Juno O. Credin of the 10th Order

*From Bonita’s Bio: ” Bonita hates Juno because she feels Juno embodies what she herself used to be.”

”If only everyone would mind their own business.”
Class: Wizard
Atlus.com say this of Juno:
”A knight with a strong sense of self, he can be overbearing to deal with, and many would rather avoid him altogether.”
The Tome of Lost Souls says:

“Often condescending and pompous, the only person he respects or even acknowledges is his superior, Audric. Juno can always be seen with a dictionary in hand because he staunchly believes that people are forgetting how to speak properly. No matter where he goes, he does not make friends, only enemies. He is curious about other people, but he is terrified of betrayal.”

Juno calls bullshit on the actions Capehorn took while Wilmgard was on the Kingdom Tour.

Baltar Bert Brouden of the 5th Order

”Gudrun…Be safe!”
Class: Wizard
Atlus.com say this of Baltar:
”An educated man who better fits the role of a scholar than a knight. Though he has a daughter at home whom he spoils, he treats Gudrun as a part of his family.”

Hopeful Sky
“Before joining the knights, he was a respected educator and researcher. He has a daughter, Maimi, whom he spoils, and he gives similar treatment to Gudrun, one of his subordinates who looks and acts a lot like his daughter. Before being injured and let go, Garick once served under Baltar.”

Alive in Regnieberg during the intro to Scene 3. He is referring to the theft of the king’s soul; the knights don’t know what was stolen.

Maimi, Baltar’s daughter and an NPC encountered in Scene 7, which was in Regnieberg, overrun with mosters. She’s dead in that scene.

Morozof Mohr Jensen of the 5th Order

”The Cardinal’s knowledge surpasses that of an average human…”
Class: Warrior
Atlus.com say this of Morozof:
”A highly intelligent general who is revered for his sage-like wisdom. He has a penchant for good drink, and good company.”
The Tome of Lost Souls says:
Grand Sage
“Morozof is a veteran commander with an incredible insight into all matters, and he was the first to notice the conspiracy against the Prince. Outside of his knightly duties, Morozof takes great pleasure in drinking with his old time friends: Rondine and Granitz.”

Morozof, ruminating on the kingdom’s downfall

Those are the candidates. Once again, are the rules:

One vote per poster.
Put your votes in bold please
You can vote for "I don't like these wizards, let's wait until we recruit more"
In the event of a tie or if "I don't like these wizards" wins, we will table the vote until the next wizard is recruited, and try again. Any wizard that received a vote will be spared from Transoul until the next vote.
The polls close next time I post a video. So in a few days, hopefully!

Good luck gentlemen! I look forward to someone pointing out a stupid error in this post! Also, any knight that does not make the cut will be subject to Transoul.

(Also, there were 4 - Gunther was on stage 16, so it counts. I think you forgot the first Melisa fight).

Well, what I'm trying to say is first third = few bosses, second third = lots of bosses, final third = medium number of bosses. When I said the density was going down I meant relative to what's happening in the game now, especially with the two back to back fights. Sorry I wasn't being clear.

How could you go for any more wizard like in appearance than Morozof?

There is but one choice, and the choice is beard uh I mean Morozof . Yeah.

e: Wow, we really don't have a lot of wizards to pick from! I thought there would be a couple more, to be honest.

e2: Okay, what the gently caress is up with those monkey avatars? I'm seeing them all over the place lately.

e3 championship edition: Oh, I guess it's the new Stupid Newbie avatar. I barely had time to get used to the last one...

It's the new "stupid newbie"/"GARBAGE DICK", anyone that had that got it replaced.

LOWTAX'S SPINE FUND

I preferred Garbage Dick. Though then again, if I don't like it, I guess it's just more reason to buy an avatar, so SA wins in the end.

Also there's no way to vote for anyone other than Morozof's hat. And the person equipped to it, I guess.

Morozof Jensen of the Three-fold Hat.

Although his VIT growth drops off almost immediately, it matters a lot less because he starts at a high level with a ton of VIT already. Great chaos index too, he's really almost a perfect wizard. I think the game tries to keep you supplied with decent knights so you don't have to beat the final boss with crappy generics.

Uh oh. Do I use Ariadne thread or Goho-M?

Morozof, because wow, Juno sucks. Also, he is the leader of an order, and they tend to be good characters.

You should've saved the vote for primary wizard until after you recruited Morozof.

Uh oh. Do I use Ariadne thread or Goho-M?

In this video, Melissa used the A.S. shield. This was from Yggdra Union, where the Archangel Marietta used it in her fight, where it blocked all skills from activating until she ran out of Morale, where it turned into the S. shield, which blocked all skills except for the Crusade card, allowing you to finally kill her. I don't think it was stated anywhere, but I assume that A.S. stands for "All Skill" and S. stands for "Skill".

Okay yeah, just a smidge overpowered with that staff. And you say we've still got a third of the game to go yet? Yikes.

I was laughing as soon as I saw this, but now I can finally admit it without spoiling anything.

Marginally better than Shepard's dancing. 2/10
If Maria is dead after all the bullshit we went through to get the Ancardia staff for her, I am gonna be pissed. I was expecting it to do something with Melissa and it didn't, so that thing better have at least saved her from death, or done something else really cool.

I guess that would be one way to handle an overpowered character, taking them away before you can fully break the game with them!

Not going to believe she's actually dead until we see a body, though. ...Well, a disembodied spirit ball or such would work too, I guess.
