Every since downton abbey has been a hit pbs has been trying to find the next big historical soap opera and they all have the same characters *male lead who at first seems like an rear end in a top hat but is oddly modern *female lead who is progressive, but not in a radical way, but in more of a "give a disapproving look at racism or sexism" way *racial minority, either really smart or has secret skills but keeps head down *lower class radical that loves younger sister of female lead *scheming old lady *scheming lady same age as female lead who sucks at schemes *secret gay character The worst one so far is Indian Summers. Its absolute poo poo, the show is shot so poorly its like they gave a bunch of 6 year olds a camera. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M77IfQc7JbU PBS is actually making their own historical drama now, its called Mercy Street and its about a civil war hospital. Oh that is another thing about these shows, so many them also double as medical dramas. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6dcFGBk1INg i don't know why i keep watching these shows. there is something incredibly funny about them to me i guess. i think its how the writers seem to be thinking "oh god, people were such poo poo back then, but me, I am better"

I like when they shoehorn in actual historical figures with the subtlety of someone dropping a teakettle full of marbles down a flight of stairs. Boardwalk Empire was extremely good at this.

i wanna say that was about the time when people started wailing about "ewwwwww the 70s are here" when the show was still at 1966 or something ridiculous like that i think there's probably a huge untapped market for doing another period drama of similarly high-quality costuming and set dressing, but set firmly in the 50s or even late 40s. people would eat that poo poo up.

i like obligatory gay characters in principle because it's cool when the media i consume acknowledges that people like me exist, but in practice they're usually jsut there to fill a quota. boring assholes with no character arc who disappear unceremoniously either for entire scenes or just altogether except omar and kima. and rawls holy crap did you guys know rawls was in the background of one of the gay bar scenes? that adds such a weird dimension to his character. the wire's a historical drama right
