Everything I've read suggested that the actual poop and storm water was perfectly fine and the only potential problems were due to stuff like oil residue and estrogen from birth control pills or whatever. And even then, it was just something scientists were kind of worried about but had no actual evidence on.

The solution to this Montreal sewage problem is pretty simple. With Keystone pipeline cancelled there are now tons of pipe and pumping equipment just sitting around. We should obviously use those to pump the poo poo out. Great public project, create a closed loop system and let her run forever. Maybe employ some artists to create a few pretty spirals. Even better, make the loop visible from space in the likeness of mr. Harper.

Every condom that is flushed, the effluent from every factory and commercial enterprise. Every car that is washed, every gallon of oil spilt. Every bit of laundry detergent. So if this thread has people who actually have to directly deal with poo water, how would you suggest they deal with 8 billion litres of the stuff. I'd rather it not hit the St Lawrence but unless the only alternative involves a time machine then welp.

Also a good solution to keeping this from happening again would be to round up those responsible for neglecting something as basic yet vital as waste water treatment for so long that dumping 8 billion litres of poo water seems like the least worst option and make them empty out the line with buckets. Of course if its like every other municipality the fault ultimately lies with the public who voted for politicians that vowed to not raise property taxes while ignoring systemic deficiencies in basic infrastructure funding.

My solution to the poo poo water dilemma is to levy a fine on the city of Montreal that is large enough that it makes it cheaper for them to build new infrastructure than to dump it in the river. Literally the only thing that will make them not do this is if we somehow make it more expensive to dump poo water than to properly deal with it, so that is what we should do.

I'm p sure one of the biggest issues with this giant pipeload of poo is if it isn't dumped relatively soon critical maintenance can't be performed on the sewer system and its going to end up being released when the system fails. If its simply a case of 'we let this problem fester and now its too much money to fix  ' then ya gently caress whoever wants to dump it.

The lack of information from trusted sources creates a void in the public sphere that is filled by artistic fancies of exactly how we're screwing with them. That Counter Radicalization ministerial position may have a lot of work cut out for him.

Basically the entire point of this is to replace the snow dump sewer feed they have to close due to blowing up the Bonaventure (which is a Good Thing) and while they're down there to do necessary maintenance work on one of the main sewer pipes feeding the treatment plant, which they can't do while it's full. So for the week they are doing it the sewers in that part of the city will outflow into the river. Since Montreal is kind of large a week's worth of poo is a rather appalling number but on the other hand it's going into a river that drains a quarter of the continent. The sheer volume involved apparently makes it unrealistic to divert and the time pressure (Winter Is Coming, etc.) makes building a backup pipe unhelpful (it would cost nine figures, take five years, and see limited use outside situations like this where they need to repair the main feed, so while it would possibly make great Keynesian stimulus it would not help the current situation.) What does this even mean? You want to levy a fine large enough that Montreal will need to build new sewers in that section of town? The point of this is so that they can do maintenance work and avoid an even larger problem occurring due to overflows.
