I just think Mansbridge is becoming a liability, they should find someone more professional and better at hiding their feelings about the issues they're reporting on. Someone who doesn't have close personal relationships with party functionaries. It's bad because it gives legitimacy to the Conservatives' cries of media bias and unfair treatment. It makes it harder for people like us to argue against those claims.

If the CBC wasn't so openly biased it certainly would be easier to argue that they're not secretly biased. I like it this way though, seems honest.

It's bad because it gives legitimacy to the Conservatives' cries of media bias and unfair treatment but it's good because the majority of Canadians think the conservatives deserve that so really they're just doing the will of the people.

This is bothersome, apparently the new science minister stubbornly advocates what seems to be a dis-proven, pseudo-scientific cure for MS. I don't know the exact details, and was hoping that she just jumped the gun once in an otherwise spotless career, but she still advocates it while hinting at conspiracy-like power clubs in the science world preventing its dissemination.

The thing that bothers me about this is that one major blunder in the public eye over stuff like this, especially with the rhetoric which she uses, could really re-enforce the same distrust for science and science based-governance among some of the public, the same public which helped Harper's muffling go without much protest.

Nonsense, the article says:

"More than a decade later, she spearheaded the fight in Parliament for recognition of an Italian surgeon’s novel theory of how to treat multiple sclerosis, despite a lack of hard evidence behind it."

It wasn't about recognition, the the bill in question was for:

(a) ensure that proper health care is not refused to a person on the ground that the person is seeking, or has obtained, the treatment for CCSVI outside Canada, whether or not that treatment is offered in Canada;
and
(b) identify the most appropriate level of clinical trials for the treatment of CCSVI to undertake in Canada in order to place Canada at the forefront of the international research;

All I see is her asking to continue research via clinical trials at a time when the science wasn't at all settled. I don't believe it even is entirely settled now in 2015, though obviously all signs point to it not being a viable treatment but research is still ongoing.

Indeed articles on her website backs up that position; that for patients who pursue CCSVI overseas are not denied aftercare here in Canada, and asking for the Health Minister (at the time) to be forthcoming with information about the promised trials. I don't see her advocating CCSVI specifically at all.

quote:

I have asked very clearly for the government to state its position on access to after care for MS patients who have travelled out of country for CCSVI treatment. Is it the federal government’s position that “MS patients who have received a venous procedure abroad should be reassured that they will be continued to be cared for by their physicians and/or regular MS specialists as any other patients?” or does the government view follow-up care as an issue that is primarily the responsibility of provincial and territorial governments? Or is it the position that “the federal government has provided regular MS research updates to provincial and territorial jurisdictions, which have the responsibility to ensure that Canadians receive appropriate health treatments and follow-up care.”

What is the government doing to ensure that no Canadian is denied post-treatment and follow-up care by a province or territory? Minister, the above questions regarding follow-up care are fundamental to Canadians with MS, and they need to know what recourse and resources they have should they be denied follow-up care, as Roxanne Garland was.

quote:

Chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency (CCSVI) continues to be described as a “controversial therapy” for multiple sclerosis in Canada. Canadians, meanwhile, have yet to be informed whether the first procedure for the promised clinical trials for CCSVI has even been performed.

Each new international study brings, in the meantime, fresh media claims that the treatment has been proven or disproven – ignoring the scientific method and the balance of evidence.

The most recent study to receive international attention, out of Buffalo, claimed the procedure failed to improve the health of MS patients. It has yet to receive peer review, did not include enough patients to produce statistically significant results and included adverse (related and unrelated) events – such as intercourse pain and a diagnosis of shingles – up to 24 months after the procedure.

Canadians living with MS are tired of the rollercoaster ride that comes with each new positive and negative study, and require real answers from their minister of health – and more importantly, progress and results from Canada’s own clinical trials.

I don't see anything that indicates she (in 2013) actually advocated for CCSVI rather she was advocating for MS patients who were confused by all the media hype and conflicting studies. There were many questions from MS patients who wanted information about promised Canadian clinical trials, and ultimately clarification from the government. The Post just saw the lovely Vice article about the same thing and ran with it to create some controversy.

I fully admit her fascination with the issue is a bit strange.

Also Mansbridge is spineless and terrible.

The Canadian Armed Forces is investigating racist comments about newly appointed Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan made by a soldier on Facebook.

The military declined to identify the soldier or precisely what was written but a source said the non-commissioned member, a Quebecer, made an “inappropriate statement” about Mr. Sajjan’s “ethnic background.”

Mr. Sajjan immigrated to Canada from India when he was a young boy.

The offensive Facebook post, which was written in French, was quickly removed.

A Forces spokesman said the army’s chain of command is probing the matter.

Mr. Sajjan is a decorated military veteran who served three tours of duty for the Forces in Afghanistan, and one in Bosnia, and worked as a detective in the Vancouver Police Service. Brigadier-General David Fraser once called him the “best single Canadian intelligence asset in theatre.”

The incident of disrespect to the minister prompted Chief Warrant Officer Kevin West to send an e-mail to soldiers warning against such conduct.

He lamented the fact a high-ranking member of the Forces made “negative” comments about the minister and warned them against disrespectful behaviour, adding that to say he is angry would be an understatement.

The Forces issued a strong statement Wednesday condemning the behaviour.

“We are very much aware of an incident in which a Canadian Armed Forces member wrote inappropriate comments on social media about the new Minister of National Defence,” Forces spokesman Dan Le Bouthillier said.

“Racist attitudes are not compatible with military ethos and with effective military service. Any conduct that reflects such attitudes will not be tolerated,” he said.

“The institution is entirely committed to the principle of equality of all people and the dignity and worth of every human being,” the Forces spokesman said.

“As previously stated by Chief of the Defence Staff Jonathan Vance, bullies have no place in the organization.”

That's Laura Secord underneath Macdonald's drink. Dead centre, I'm guessing is the self-proclaimed prophet of the Métis, Louis Riel, and further right is probably either Wolfe or Montcalm (I could tell for certain if the thing was coloured). Facts are an anachronism. We live on perception and ideology. Of course, this is said so often nowadays, it's almost a worn out cliché.

Wasn't the deconstruction of modes of thought approximating objectivity originally a progressive response to the perception of Western scientific chauvinism of the 19th century? Talk about chickens coming home to roost, because conservatives the world over have done a marvelous job capturing that sentiment for their own purposes.

It's so deeply ingrained at this point that only catastrophic climate disaster or slow cultural shift will reverse this course. Thomas Kuhn's thoughts on scientific revolutions apply right across the cultural spectrum, I believe.

Well it's more than fundamentalism, Sajjan's father was a high ranking member of the World Sikh Organization, which is almost the public face of the Sikh secessionist movement, even if it has no explicit ties. They've very controversially expressed approval for some of the acts of terrorism committed by Sikhs, including the Air India bombing. There could definitly be cause for concern, but the son doesn't seem to have any apparent involvement, and I'm sure security checks have been performed more than once during his career.
