EDIT: The actual paper is by a Toronto/Google team, not facebook. Unlike the Google paper, the facebook post gives not actual information about how it does, just "hey, it's strong!". My guess is that this is a fruitful research direction (MCST programs have been looking at neural nets for move evaluation for a long time), but some of this looks like a lot of unsubstantiated marketing hype, too. EDIT2: The facebook video also looks to be against GnuGo 3.8, which was released in 2009. Borachon fucked around with this message at 17:07 on Nov 3, 2015 |

I actually really enjoyed the commentary! It's two casters: Andrew Jackson, a very strong amateur; and Munwhang (sp?) Kim, a Korean 9p. Kim had really deep insight on the board, while Andrew did it a good job of pulling his wisdom down to our level. I look forward to watching the stream tonight (7:30 pst iirc)

Maybe this is old news, but http://goban.org/ is an HTML5 sgf editor. If you search, you can find corresponding browser apps (chrome, opera, and firefox, I think). It won't load sgf files from my phone properly, but now you don't need anything installed on a device to discuss variations, etc. Thread by developer on another forum is at http://www.lifein19x19.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=11239 dirby fucked around with this message at 17:15 on Nov 4, 2015 |

According to Nick Wedd on the Computer Go mailing list, the facebook program appears to be playing on KGS as darkforest and darkfores1. It doesn't play ranked, but general feeling seems to be that it's about KGS 1d or so.

Did KGS just go down? Dammit, and in the middle of a game, too! Restarted the computer and was able to finish the game. I do not play well under the time pressure of KGS automatch's "fast game", apparently. dirby fucked around with this message at 18:33 on Nov 7, 2015 |

I think you can pick up a few points by attaching underneath because if B tries to kill your stone he'll just get cut and suddenly a white moyo.

Hooray! I played the guy I always play at the once a year convention, he gave me 9 stones last year and beat me by 50-60, so his 4 kyumeans I'm probably around 20 kyu. This year, he spotted me 9 again, and I trapped a big group in the center and he resigned. Sooooo I am probably better now? Who knows! Also played shogi love that game. Pretty much; he knows how to attack attack attack, and eventually either overplays (as in that game) or doesn't (the previous year's game). I do think I've gotten a bit better at playing solid moves, even when they're in gote, because then suddenly my shape doesn't look insanely bad and oh well I gave up one of my 9 free moves at the beginning, that's okay.

Posting in here to mention that SmartGo Kifu for iPad/iPhone is worth every penny. As an aside, what's a good beginner's book for Go to give as a gift? It seems that 'The Second Book of Go' is extraordinarily expensive on Amazon.
