God, Facebook is a goddamn battlefield right now. My favourite post so far has been a diatribe by a pro-K supporter who said "voting Macri is destroying the emancipation process for which San Martin fought, and will cast us back under the yoke of Spanish rule". I think this guy actually has a college degree.

tl;dr vote for Scioli otherwise this and many other state-funded programs will be shut down to funnel money to our imperialist overlords. Hail Saint Peron. Similar messages are being posted in the govt's social media accounts, including the Casa Rosada twitter, lol. Bonus track: Girl cries because Macri is winning the elections and he's going to sell everything. Mother says that they're going to kick him out. Democracy at work. https://youtu.be/uoeyYOD1Ya0 [Cries in Spanish]

I dont know how much that is being covered by international media. Even here in Brazil news agencies dont seems to be taking it seriously enough. A dam of mining waste, belonging to mining giant Samarco (half BHP, half Vale do Rio Doce) have broke in Minas Gerais, the waste engulfing the town of Mariana and contaminating all the surrounding area, including a big river (Rio Doce, the very own river whose name the company uses). At least 6 people are dead, dozens are missing, the town is basically gone and the damage to the ecosystem is incommensurable, but already considered by specialists the worst ecological disaster in brazilian history. The waste were contaminated with heavy pollutants, including mercury, and now biologists are saying that the river is probably 100% dead. Federal government havent done much about it yet, besides setting a fine of R$ 250 millions for the company, which seems to be very light considering the extension and severity of the damage. Signs of company neglect are all over, even though they are trying to blame the disaster in some pretty low seismic activity detected in the area before the accident. Is pretty awful http://www.wsj.com/articles/anger-grows-in-brazil-after-dam-failures-1447379211 Elias_Maluco fucked around with this message at 23:36 on Nov 13, 2015 |

Isn't the $250m only considered a provisional fine, with the proper cost of clean up and legal action still incoming? I read it was probably going to run into several billion dollars of payments.

Now prosecutors are talking about much larger reparations, R$ 1 billion or so I've read.

This mud spill is a real shame, besides the riverside absolute devastation and poisoning it's gonna ruin a great deal of a ecologically important and very beautiful stretch of coast, spreading heavy metal poisoning on people for years to come. In less sad Brazil news, this week the "pro military intervention" blowhards took a hit as one of their marches got intervened on by military police and Olavo de Carvalho (right-wing pundit and former astrologist, residing in the US) got banned from the official Brazilian Army page for insulting a general he says is aligned with them drat commies. Apparently our right wing still has enough tact as to throw these idiots under the bus.

A couple of months (weeks?) ago a mining company in Argentina released a bunch of cyanide contaminated water. Nobody (that matters) cares, I mean, Volkswagen sold contaminating and fraudulent cars to people who actually matter and they are going to get just another slap on the wrist. At least cyanide is easier to clean up than heavy metals :/.

Scioli Any idea what Cristina is going to do now? She doesn't seem the type to just disappear, especially when she's at least sort of popular. Although I guess she might if Macri gets some corruption poo poo on her.

Argentina That's usually what happens from one government to the next really. I'd be surprised if you managed to NOT find dirt on someone after four years in power. I thought she was a candidate for the PARLASUR? The Mercosur parliament or some other bullshit. She's had plenty of health problems lately so who knows if she (or the country) can survive another four years. E: At least the schadenfreude from both sides right now is glorious
