well a buncha small christian schools these days are actually pretty progressive sects, while formerly small but real conservative ones often get sponsored by some conservative wackjob with money and get big.

The Campaign Trail game that was discussed a few weeks ago just updated with 1976. Now, you too, can lead Jimmy Carter to electoral victory.

I'm having a hell of a time trying to win as Ford. I can get him within inches of the Presidency with Connally as my running mate, but I can't seem to win Texas.

Telemakhos and Penelope (and especially Argos :smith: ) are very sympathetic (as is Odysseus, I would argue; remember, he never wanted to go to war in the first place), but Helen really stands out given how much she gets hosed over and how little say she has in any of what happens to her

I POSSESS THE POWER CHRONIC

"- As they were speaking, a dog that had been lying asleep raised his head and pricked up his ears. This was Argos, whom Odysseus had bred before setting out for Troy, but he had never had any enjoyment from him. In the old days he used to be taken out by the young men when they went hunting wild goats, or deer, or hares, but now that his master was gone he was lying neglected on the heaps of mule and cow dung that lay in front of the stable doors till the men should come and draw it away to manure the great close; and he was full of fleas. As soon as he saw Odysseus standing there, he dropped his ears and wagged his tail, but he could not get close up to his master. When Odysseus saw the dog on the other side of the yard, dashed a tear from his eyes without Eumaeus seeing it, and said:

'Eumaeus, what a noble hound that is over yonder on the manure heap: his build is splendid; is he as fine a fellow as he looks, or is he only one of those dogs that come begging about a table, and are kept merely for show?'

'This dog,' answered Eumaeus, 'belonged to him who has died in a far country. If he were what he was when Odysseus left for Troy, he would soon show you what he could do. There was not a wild beast in the forest that could get away from him when he was once on its tracks. But now he has fallen on evil times, for his master is dead and gone, and the women take no care of him. Servants never do their work when their master's hand is no longer over them, for Zeus takes half the goodness out of a man when he makes a slave of him.'

So saying he entered the well-built mansion, and made straight for the riotous pretenders in the hall. But Argos passed into the darkness of death, now that he had fulfilled his destiny of faith and seen his master once more after twenty years."

I have a french translation by Philippe Jaccottet that's also very good, particularly bc the French allows for a few words that could only be translated as phrases in English.
for example, right at the start:

O Muse, conte-moi l'aventure de l'Inventif...

Which in the Fagles is:

Sing to me of the man, Muse, the man of twists and turns...

I think it's pretty cool.

Yeah, and especially since Penelope and Telly get remembered as faithful and honorable while Helen's reputation is....not as good. Which I guess led to the ghost theory.

More sad Homer quotes: Helen at Hector's funeral

"Hector—of all my husband's brothers,
you're by far the dearest to my heart.
My husband's godlike Alexander,
who brought me here to Troy. I wish I'd died
before that happened! This is the twentieth year
since I went away and left my native land,
but I've never heard a nasty word from you
or an abusive speech. In fact, if anyone
ever spoke rudely to me in the house—
one of your brothers or sisters, some brother's
well-dressed wife, or your mother—for your father
always was so kind, as if he were my own—
you'd speak out, persuading them to stop,
using your gentleness, your soothing words.
Now I weep for you and for my wretched self,
so sick at heart, for there's no one else
in spacious Troy who's kind to me and friendly.
They all look at me and shudder with disgust."
