interstellar was a bunch of really cool space scenes strung together with boring poo poo about farming and matthew mcconaughey crying and yelling MURPH i think the most disappointing thing about it is how it's obvious that nolan poured his heart and soul into making it, so it could have been so much better it's not like batman 3 where you could tell he just didn't care anymore

also, the book "the science of interstellar" is kind of trash; it's just kip thorne desperately trying to bend physics to fit into the story requirements, and it's obvious he's exasperated by poo poo like "okay we need a planet where 1 hour on the surface is equal to 7 years in orbit!". it's got some neat pictures and about half of it is good beginner level explanation of astrophysics stuff, but then he's also got pages of equations which are just going to completely alienate most readers. someone should write a "the science of the martian" book instead which would just be an updated version of zubrin's "the case for mars"

The science of the martian is the book the martian. Also I find the science in the science of Star Wars pretty dubious, but the ship cutaways are sweet.

the science of discworld books are legit good because the idea is that the wizards accidentally make a roundworld in a jar, which is earth, and they are very confused about things like consistent physics and a speed of light that you can't measure by eye

the best thing about interstellar is the best thing about all terrible modern sci fi movies: cinema discusso stumbling around for anything scientifically or thematically interesting at all in it. they argued for several pages that "love conquers all" wasn't a central theme at all, and in fact matthew mchonahey was able to contact his daughter not through the magical love portal, but because of <contrived technobabble>
