Every time I hear an enemy in one of these games say "How can this be? He is only one!/There are only a few/etc." I smile to myself and think "Yes, but I carry enough missiles and assorted ammunition for an entire squadron on my own and you can't hit for poo poo." I know this is an elemental part of this series of games, but it amuses me again and again.

More acz trivia Here's the outfit/custom used for Pixy's filming AFAIK, pixy's actor, Sean Ryan, does fashion modelling. In fact I think the entire pilot interview cast came from the same agency. As for the outfit, one of the PA staff was insistent about getting it weathered properly so it looks right. He took the outfit to the park near the office and beat it up there by scraping it with knife+smearing dirt over it. ALSO The original plan for ACZ, was actually going to be a story of a mercenary pilot who flew through Erusean War and Osean/Yuktobanian War... so yea, there you have it. There's a great scene at the end of HBO's The Brink (a criminally underrated series) that's basically Ace Combat IRL. Tasked with taking down a rouge fighter and bomber with nuclear weapons on board, an American jet expends all its missiles and gun ammo downing the fighter and is forced to ram the bomber to make sure it can't deploy its warhead. It also highlights the fact that the only reason pilots like Cipher and co. become battlefield legends in AC games is because they have access to a magical pool of infinite auto-reloading missiles and no one else does.

I actually like AC5's cutscenes the best. That may be due to the music, and also the almost whimsical feeing to those cutscenes at times. At the same time, they are directly relevant to the characters involved, unlike say AC6 (I also love that OST, but for me there is a big disconnect between the cutscenes and the missions).

I get what 6 was going for with its story in theory, but in execution, it doesn't really work out as well as Project Aces imagined it would. The idea was to have a sort of World War Z-style "portrait of a war from the POV of society, not just the soldiers" story. Unfortunately, most of the subjects of that story are kind of lovely characters telling uninteresting stories. The ones more connected to the gameplay half of the story are the most interesting and relevant. They also kind of shot themselves in the foot by having the majority of the speaking cast say the phrase "Go dance with the angels" unironically. You can practically hear the hesitation in some of the voice actors' voices when it comes to that stupid rear end line.

I bet the majority of those 10 months went towards designing/making the unique enemy squads, which are the highlight of this game, really. I'd like to help with some commentary. I did play 2 to full completion, even getting all the Z.O.E. medals, but it's been a while. The ones I remember most stuff about are 5 and Zero.

Oh boy, I never got to play the PS2 ACs, as I never had a PS2 and by the time I got a PS3 they had stopped making them backwards compatible. But I know Crow will do a good job with the series, so looking forwards to seeing what I missed. Also, kudos to TyrantSabre, your AC6 LP got me into the series. Before the series was smothered by Infinity I felt like they were experimenting with interesting systems that would have tied together well. While I'm still iffy on AH's Dogfight mode even after playing it, it had a bunch of interesting things to it (and helicopter door gunner sections...), some of the other games that came near the end were shaping up to make something very nice when put together: X had plane customization, which Joint Assault expanded to all planes, which allowed for some really interesting stuff. Take a Mig-21 and make it's agility score beat that of an F-22. Decide you don't want to take any standard missiles and just take two types of special weapons instead. Joint Assault had the, well, Joint Assault mode, where you and buddies/random scrubs would take on different maps at the same time, with actions from one affecting what's going on in the other. 6 had massive maps with multiple sub objectives that would have been entire missions in other games. It made me feel that they were planning a game with a massive multiplayer campaign where basically every plane (except the A6, holy poo poo that thing basically didn't have engines in JA) would be viable for most missions, where you either split up to achieve a few things at once which shifts the tide of battle or team up to wipe a section of the map clean of hostiles in three minutes tops, where the various objectives would effect things in the other sections of the map. We got Infinity instead.

Regarding the ammo discussion; in reality to run a mission like M02 here, you'd put together a package of at least three of four flights (of four planes each) of fighter-bombers or dedicated ground attack planes to destroy the ground targets, at least one flight armed with anti-radar missiles and cluster bombs to suppress enemy air defences, and probably two or three flights to provide escort and combat patrol over the engagement area. And that's to carry enough ammo to destroy everything you and Pixie take out pretty much single-handedly. An F-16 armed to the teeth for air-to-air will carry six missiles and its gun. The saying goes, though, that when you're out of missiles, you're out of ammo; the gun's only there to make the pilot feel better. Of course that's not strictly true, many air-to-air kills have been scored with guns both before and after all missiles have been expended, but today missiles are reliable enough and deadly enough that anyone who tries to attack someone with only his gun is probably going to get his rear end handed to him. For a quick Ace Combat comparison you could say that modern fighters carry 4-6 XMAAs and 2-4 QAAMs.

This is the only Strangereal AC game I've played, so definitely looking forward to the others! That said, I love this one so much a rewatch is going to be quite enjoyable as well, considering things like the camera lock on your target was a thing I never realized was possible back when I played it! That said, a small correction on orders, you tried to get Pixy to "cover" a far away point to keep him from taking kills, but what "cover" actually does is have him stick to you like glue to cover you from approaching enemy planes, where some of the other orders will have him split from you to attack more independently.

You know, after watching the ribbon replay at the end of the level, I was pretty impressed by how close Pixy actually stayed on your wing and covered your six. When I played Zero and 5 I almost always set my wingmen on Attack or Disperse but if I ever play them again I might try using Cover, because it seems like he got a fair amount of kills doing so. I was also surprised that in Zero, Pixy's kills actually took away from your score. because in 5 it was the opposite. Of course, those wingmen were loving useless peacenik hippies, even if there were three of them...
