Shifty Pony posted:Fiancee used to work at a hospital as a pediatric dietitian. SNAP and WIC were in many cases the only thing keeping kids alive. Even then you'd have kids coming in for failure to thrive or really nasty complications because even with SNAP and WIC their parents just straight up couldn't afford to get enough calories into them without resorting to foods that would interact with medical conditions. Cheap food is carb-heavy and absolutely wrecks the systems of diabetic kids. Sounds like their parents need to try harder to get a better job.

greatn posted:My wife said it in a class she taught, in an academic context, it was literally part of the text of the play they were studying. And she did get a complaint, luckily the student offended came directly to her after the class, my wife apologized, and apologized further to the entire class at the next lecture. It never went further or to adminstration. She's not from here (the deep south) though, she's from Chicago and New York and naively thought such a thing could be uttered in the proper academic context without offending someone. I was pretty upset with her naivety and begged her not do something so stupid and possibly jeopardize her career again. Hopefully your wife, and the offending professor in question here, learned the very important lesson to never put your neck out for your students' education. The days of professors being intelligent mentors who lead their students to greater awareness of the world with a series of provocative lessons that yield greater truths are completely dead and gone. Spoon-feed your students basic facts and comfortable perspectives that they already hold, and you will do well and they will be happy. They don't want to be challenged, that's not why they went to college. This is particularly true at the undergraduate-level, and in any liberal arts field, but it holds true at every level of academia.

The conservative media has a very different take on the Black Lives Matter protester being assaulted at the Trump rally. It seems to put people in a bubble of anger and fear where everyone gets what they deserve and their ideas are never wrong. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news...atter-activist/ "Rise News article" posted:About ten feet behind me a scrum broke out in the crowd. The guy was shouting ‘black lives matter’ and working his way through the crowd. A wall of people turned and started pushing against him. Then this group moved down like somebody had been shoved to the ground. Then the cops and security came and escorted him out. The BLM guy seemed wild eyed, then he started shouting f*** Trump as they walked him out. Many in the crowd told the man to calm down and told him that all lives mattered.

Being challenged and mentored in that way cannot be the point of a degree when it's being treated as a business investment with the expected return on investment of a better job at the end. It's not an education anymore it's a monetary formula; put in X, get out Y and Z. Note that I'm not at all faulting people who view a degree this way. it's one of the very, very few possible methods of class mobility left in the country. I'm just positing an alternative to "lol stupid millennials".
