I think this is the only time I've felt a quote from Anansi Boys is appropriate; "You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.

Elendil004 posted:What even are they doing? Are they joining the track together? I feel like there's GOT to be a faster way to do that. Yep, they are welding the tracks together. They mount a refractory mould on the gap between the tracks, pre-heat the rail ends with a torch, then light the thermite to fill the gap. It's actually the fastest way to do it. The other major way to weld them is flash-butt welding -- you electrify the two parts of the track, start an arc between them with a stick, wait for the arc to heat up the ends of the track until they puddle, then turn off the current and physically push the tracks together, creating a forge weld. It's slower, and the fact that you need to move one of the tracks means that it's tricky to use when you're repairing an existing track. But it produces very smooth, clean welds.

That's just a thermite weld. Pretty standard.

Yeah I had a buddy who used a can of some sort of lighter fluid that didn't break the stream properly (non suppurated? it may not have been grill lighter fluid, don't remember). The flame traveled up the stream and backblasted up the can and spread all over his body. He lost 90% of his skin and should have died (he kept his face, junk, and fingernails though). Any burny things scare me now
