I'm the biggest idiot who will ever live to play ADOM because I always go to save the puppy first, every time, because I'm a sperglord who doesn't want the little girl sobbing over an adorable little dead puppy Though it actually helps, because the dog dungeon is so brutal that if you do survive it, you'll be drat well set for a while. Also, if you want a trick, you can always suicide-dive down to the vault level, IMMEDIATELY leave the second you get to it, and then leave the dungeon to come save the puppy properly later. Because if the dog is generated alive but then left on the level, he'll be frozen and will stay alive until you decide to go find him. Usually what this means is going back right before I beat the game or leave the Chain to glide down the levels making GBS threads thunder and swords, so I can hit the last level, instantly detect everything there, instantly teleport to the dog, deal 400 damage to some poor sorry orc who happened to be in the same room, and then escort the thing out with half the levels back turning into a localized massacre as tunnels get blown open. It's a nice note to end the game on or head down for your Ultra finale with a happy kid and her puppy calling you a true hero. On the topic of elves, I don't mind them so much but I just wish the game didn't decide to slap in 4 increasingly better elves with excellent learning/mana/appearance scores, gentle XP penalties, hugely long lives that let them tank Ghost Kings, stupendous magical aptitude, and a few dots of flavor for the Dark Elves. At least Mist Elves have an interesting mechanic. Meanwhile, trolls are slammed with crippling XP penalties (triple every other race, I think, so enjoy having to summon mobs of molochs to reenact WWF on your spine), aren't even very good for their physical power and regen past the early midgame, and have to eat a small bus worth of screaming children every 2 hours to not die. Anyways this is why I quit ADOM because I get like this about it

My ADOM opening is always: - Bandit village to kill a bandit for the first kill - SMC while still level one, hopefully find the stairs and blanket by level 5 - Raider lord quest if I should be capable of it - Carpenter quest / First six levels of druid dungeon - Puppy Cave - Kill Hotzenplotz - HMV if I found the stairs for it, otherwise CoC I'm going to have to play something to save that puppy just for the sweet achievement.

And I'm too lazy to do Raider/Hotzenplotz.

Trolls are not real good in ADOM but they do have their benefits. They level extremely slowly so fully exploring the small cave is doable and they're hardy enough to make it all the way through to the HMV, giving you another early shop for sight-IDing some stuff, and occasionally you find a really good affordable item there. I found an iron-shod quarterstaff of devastation there once which I instantly bought.

Candle troll healers are an old standby for learning the game because you don't have to poke people with a scalpel and the troll regen synergizes with the class. You're going to randomly die to other poo poo that most races aren't vulnerable to (aging, mostly), but if you just want to stop getting constantly reamed by jackals in the forest or by the ants in PC2 I'd recommend it.

I made a dark elf monk called sanic where I took every +speed talent asap (also had raven starsign) It actually worked nicely, getting a bunch of extra hits in and so on, then out of sheer stubbornness I tried leading a cat downstairs in the puppy cave away from an altar I was sacrificing to and ended up in a tunnel with it at one end and a river on the other side. I decided that I could take a couple hits from drowning, so I leapt in and drowned after moving one tile. It took me a while to realize the significance of this. edit: Also since I stopped caring about the little girl, I've been experimenting more...with her dead dog. I've tried throwing it at her 'Little Girl looks shocked!' but doesn't seem to understand that it's her pet, I've eaten it in front of her, I've left it for her to find and she simply picks it up, non the wiser. What I'm trying to say is, this town is hosed up. Pumpkinreaper fucked around with this message at 10:14 on Nov 23, 2015 |

For whatever it's worth, my ADOM opening: * Get puppy and carpenter/druid quests (carpenter quest only if I don't healing) * Complete Carpenter quest/get to the last level of the druid quest * Do puppy quest (Never have problems doing this before day 4. If the character dies, he wasn't meant to be). * Finish Druid quest (use a wand of fire/fire lizard on his corpse and/or lots of holy water to get his corpse back to the druid for the PoCC). * Kill Hotzenplots with a wand * Pre-crown or crown (usually the latter unless playing something like a thief) This will get you to the CoC at level 10-13 with an artifact in your pack. I've found that if I can get through the Dwarven Halls without dying, I'll usually ascend barring some bullshit. I skip the UD and HMV since I rarely find that path to be worth it in the early game. Secret tech I've recently learned: throwing a potion of cure poison at a monster with a poisonous attack will stun it hard. This trivializes the snake from beyond.

If ToME, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, and Magic: The Gathering have taught me anything, it's that the best way to achieve balance is to break everything until there are about 8-12 things which are all so profoundly broken they achieve a bizarre kind of parity with each other.

I remember I used to like raven for the trident earlier but honestly I haven't played in like a year. I have forgotten everything. So far I've been going to Small Cave until level 4. If I feel super strong, I go to unremarkable dungeon. Otherwise, I go to village and get quest for healing if I don't have healing. Or druid. Then I go down and finish whichever dungeon and after that... I'm lost. Should I head to dwarf town from there? Also are Spears still one of the best melee weapons because of the DV bonus?

Candle got nerfed but it's still probably the best. I like Tree and Dragon on weak characters, and Cup on characters with either great skill sets or low Le scores. Raven's good but I usually avoid it since High Elf is my favorite race and I don't need any more exp penalties.

Cup is good wholesome fun. Also learned today that it doesn't matter how badass you are, you can still kill yourself (quite easily) with lightning bolt. It was a gnome wizard where I got invisibility, strength of atlas and ray of death quite early, so I was incredibly hard to hit and could lug around EVERYTHING. Also found a pair of blessed seven league boots too (which got burnt to ashes earlier in an area with a bunch of steel golems). Had the salamander birth sign which helped early on, making my firebolts and burning hands cost virtually nothing, I was actually gearing up to try to do the tower of flame for the first time too, but was panicking because I (thought) didn't have a fireproof blanket. So I end up killing myself trying to do trickshots one this one dungeon floor with some sort of temple surrounded by water, water grues, water demons, etc. Then again, it was feeling a little TOO easy, with it being annoying at times encountering monsters that shrug off all my fire spells and the only other two non-fire offensive spells I had were lightning bolt and magic missile.

Shrugs actually don't have much to do with the spell's element, as I recall. Some monsters just resist your spells because they're fuckers. The easiest way to prevent shrugs is to up the spell proficiency until they stop. Burning Hands and all the *balls can't be shrugged, also. ADOM!

Fireproof blanket probably isn't necessary for the Tower anyway, there's a guaranteed ring of ice in the Ice Queen's place that will prevent most fire-related equipment destruction when blessed--just don't bring in incredibly important stuff like SLB or huge stacks of good potions/scrolls because the RNG will notice you taunting it and strike you down. My current character only had the ring and took zero equipment damage despite a long and lovely ACW fight so it'd probably be fine barring massively poor RNG. Also the message spam from wearing a ring of ice will make you want to be dead if you play with classic message display on.

doomrl-server update: I've pushed a new version to the server. Only small changes -- there is now a "delete" command to delete a game in progress without saving the recording or generating a mortem or score line, and subtitles are now the default for anyone who hasn't explicitly turned them off. I've completed a few games with subtitles enabled and think they're stable enough for general use. I know someone several pages ago was asking if the subtitles support could be split out into its own thing that doesn't require doomrl-server, and I said it already was but there was no documentation on how to install it and get it working. There still isn't. Sorry. Maybe I can do that this weekend. ttymor update: Work on ttymor hasn't stalled completely, but it has slowed way down; I have less free time lately, and what I do have I'm often spending reading or playing Transcendence because I can't focus enough for programming. I have at least done a major overhaul to how EntityTypes are stored internally, which simplifies the entity creation code and makes it possible to incrementally create EntityTypes. This is a prerequisite for itemDB.xml support, which is now working in a very basic way -- none of the components are supported, so each item is just an inert object with a description listing the components it should have. That's enough to test basic inventory screen functionality and picking up/dropping/spawning objects, though, so that's what I'm working on next.
