I watched the first episode of The Expanse. I think it might be good.

Thinks I liked:
Space cop
UN Indian Grandma
UN Indian Grandma torturing a belter
Captain ignoring distress signal
Captain being correct to ignore distress signal
Little touches like cracked screen on space cop's phone and humidifier on space cop's space cop boss lady's desk
Martians using nukes

Thinks I did not like:
whiney belters
rugged white antihero
bad cgi birds

planetes is supposed to be this super good exception to the rule and everybody should watch it

so of course it stinks like a big turd and every scene is somebody yelling about their feeling called love

like a third of the series is about a bunch of goons pretending to be ninjas on the moon it's really embarrassing and anybody that recommended it in this thread should feel ashamed

I've read most of Max Gladstone's Craft series over the last couple weeks (just started the most recently published / earliest in the timeline novel yesterday), and they meet this criteria, I think.

They're like What if Jim Butcher was a good writier? but more of a complete alt history of the human species instead of Modern Society! But with magic!

The first one is about Kos (the fire god of Alt Coloumb) dying/going bankrupt and his creditors/worshipers arguing over his corpse/assets and it follows the corporate lawyer-mages that are doing the litigating/wizard battling. (Also, maybe he was murdered?)

The second is about the merger of Red King Consolidated (the Concern operated by Lord Kopil, the King in Red, a Deathless King) with another Concern and difficulties with industrial sabotage of the water purification system they operate.

The third one is about an island nation that constructs mindless idols that act as an offshore haven for their client's soulstuff in order to keep it out of the reach of their ruling gods and/or Deathless Kings. One of the idols died due to an investment in its portfolio going bad and the story follows a priest analyst trying to figure out how things went wrong.
