I did a "nice" reverse finish

Also do cars glow like that on some(not all) dimmer stages for everyone? Or is it only on low settings? It's fugly and they should fix it.

Continuing my RS200 upgrading, the game seems to continue to seek vengeance with unkind weather/excessive nighttime racing (finally finished upgrades... think it took 18 stages over 5 events and 12 of them were night); in very related news: the RS200 headlights, even when not damaged at all, don't shine very high so Finland night stages are extra difficult because you routinely can't see the road ahead because they don't illuminate high enough on the bumpy/hilly terrain (maybe an issue for other cars too, haven't done much nighttime Finland). Also: Finland is way dark at night compared to others*; on the Monaco snowing night stages I actually turn off my headlights because it's easier to see since it's pretty bright and gets rid of all the back-reflecting light from snowflakes.

* I really hope they add an option to just make lights a toggle instead of having to hold for three or whatever seconds because there was a light at one of the stage starts so I didn't take notice that they weren't turned on when I started my run. I frantically tried trying them on like seven times before I finally got to a straight/stable enough spot ~40 seconds later to hold the button long enough (have it up on the D-pad following my PCars controls... can't steer while turning them on which isn't an issue at all when it's just a button push and not a push-and-hold).

Speaking of: did they ever fix the reverse finish achievement for Rallycross? Definitely finished five races (including a final... which I almost ended up losing... won by a few hundredths of a second) spinning myself around and backing across the finish and didn't get credit for the achievement. :smith:

I don't have issues with glowing cars with graphics at high or very high, I forget which.

I don't really remember what happened here, but I think this was a recent Daily finish where I kept it together until almost the end and got a spectacular view post-finish:

Wales, amirite?

Edit: While posting post-race SSs, the only proper way to finish the race on Lydden Hills is to hit that drat bump coming onto the front straight:

Kind of wish Dirt Rally had a quick replay you could do mid-stage. Never get to see the cool flips and whatnot usually because 1. flipping doesn't look cool on in-car cam, it's just disorienting and frightening, and 2. I'm too lazy to go back through the replay to look and see if what might've been cool actually was (or often restart so I can't even get to the replay in cases where it really murders the car).

Well..

I got you out of last.

on the 3rd stage i didn't use caution on a caution turn 6 and clipped a pile of logs which spun me around and slammed my rear end into some trees, removing a wheel (or more) which retired me.

I might just reset the event.

Small thing, but might be useful to a lot of people. The Dirt Mod Manager app just got its 1.0 update, and now has an actual GUI. It's basically a little program to manage all your custom liveries and one-click install/uninstall them without having to worry about backing up the stock liveries. Really good to have if you download a lot of skins.

Awww, I might've had him on Wales (did manage 1st over him once last league championship... also on Wales) if we had car config for the first stage. For kicks I decided to test out my pre-v2-physics Wales setup on my Peugeot 205 and it was badass compared to the Default (stuck to the stage like glue in comparison; actually used 5th gear on the longer straights instead of literally never... correspondingly, had much more power consistency all around). Managed to get top time for 3/4 stages (alright... it was by hundredths of a second on stage 2... the last couple I picked up a couple seconds apiece), but still couldn't make up my time loss on the first stage. :smith:

My recent upgrading of the Lancia Delta and RS200 are a hilarious contrast to the Peugeot "redlines nigh-instantly in any gear when you floor it" 205, granted I didn't drive the Lancia/Ford after fully upgrading (so, missing ~35/50 HP respectively).

Says December on their timeline. Pretty sure it was November previously, but changed at some point; maybe with Modern Masters dropping in November instead of October. Kind of hope it doesn't drop so soon after I thought about suggesting (but didn't, seeing it say December) we hold off starting a new League thing until it could include Sweden.

That said, wouldn't surprise me for it to end up in November given they mentioned in a Road Book that the stage creators were working hard on Sweden even before Modern Masters dropped (presumably since they didn't have much/any contribution for Modern Masters content).

Yeah it was originally slated for November, but since Modern Masters only just missed October by 2 days I wouldn't be surprised if it dropped sometime this week. Though finishing it early would mean they'd have a few more days to find major bugs and fix other issues since this is going to be the actual release as well as just another content pack.

Excited to see the new soft snow physics. I quite like Monte Carlo most of the time but there are definitely a few corners that catch me out and throw me off the track at pretty slow speeds when maybe it would be a bit kinder if it wasn't an actual solid ramp of ice on the side of the road. Or possibly not. This has been a really positive early access experience in general, by far the most I've played one pre-release.

Joined the dirtygoons league as Useless, did okay but not great in the quattro. Fferm Wynt is the only course I'm familiar with (spent a bunch of time getting used to ford escort's rwd on that stage in particular, infact it's probably the only track I even remotely have memorised despite putting 46 hours into the game since the early access release) and it's the one I hosed up the most, so that's pretty fair/predictable. Recorded my run too, but it's with Track IR so it might be uncomfortable as the camera floats around. The bonus is you can probably detect every time my arse clenches and see me panic when the co driver first calls out a splash and I realise I can't remember which button on my wheel I bound the windscreen wiper to.

Is that a challenge?
I just had a moment on one of the Finland stages where I managed to bounce perfectly from crest to crest of about 5 jumps in a row with the wheels touching the ground for all of .02 seconds. I hit the tree at the end really hard.

Also I forgot the league events throw you straight into the first stage with no setup/shakedown opportunity and haven't driven a Group B car since the latest(?!) physics update. And then one of my crew contracts expired halfway though the event.

Bouncing uncontrollably into a crash is the worst.

You can reset the League event if it screwed you that hard; it's an option for League events and last time it was configured to have a setup/shakedown opportunity. Also, pretty sure Leagues aren't supposed to count against crew stages anymore (if you had an expired crewman it likely would cut into effectiveness though*); haven't looked to verify they haven't been though.

* I decided to drop a bunch of ducats into contract extensions recently: my lowest-stage crewman is paid for the next ~170 stages. :v:

That's a very ordinary cover. I do wish they would have tried to evoke the same feeling in the cover art as they did with some of the achievement names. The quiet and anticipation. Probably not gonna happen just because of how specific the build of a hillclimb car is. Same for the rallycross cars, their gearing is so insanely close that you'd just have a miserable time driving them on rally stages. I really don't get why people are so desperate for this since the RX and hillclimb cars are for the most part just rally cars already in the game with special tuning. The 205 T16 hillclimb isn't hugely different handling wise from the regular T16.

The way they wrote the achievements kind of reminds me of the narrative writing from the Halo games. Laconic, using only the most appropriate words.

The ideal rally game cover is the gratuitous face close-up of a driver as he sits, waiting, in his car. His brow sweats furiously, eyes focused infinitely far ahead like a man reliving his Vietnam days. He anticipates the ride. He knows he will dig in on a landing and barrel roll at 115 miles per hour, his wheeled steed careening sidelong into the spectators lining the stage as its structure and his championship aspirations alike crumple and implode.

I think I'm burnt out on this game right now. The small stage selection has lost its novelty and right now I'm just kind of chilling out waiting for Sweden and the WRC Polo before I keep playing. Also feeling bummed out knowing that sought-after functions that would really blow open up replay value like custom/rng tracks aren't going to happen.

Because not all the cars that compete at Pikes or Knox Mtn are top tier setups. There are plenty of classes that aren't cutting edge, but would be plenty fun to drive.

Currently in a favorable spot with Dirt Rally revisiting Group B with updated physics and stages seem a lot less repetitive when I can run shorter (liking 4 stage/event ones where the location changes make me feel much, much less bogged down than the 12 stages) Custom Championships. Still haven't revisited Group A or got into to R2's even yet.

That said, yeah, the sources of much more replayability not getting mentioned really outside that survey kind of has me apprehensive about the future of Dirt Rally. They've done fantastic so far though so I'm hopeful Codemasters doesn't take a big ol' dump on the team probably having good post-release aspirations.

Yup, definitely not Rallycross, if it's legit, with Ogier/Ingrassia on the side. They hinted of at least a car coming with Sweden and the 2010's could use some love more than most classes; perhaps they were able to trade a car licensing for helping out the Colin McRae remembrance thing at Rally GB. Hopefully I don't hate it as much as the Rallycross Polo because I definitely wasn't impressed with the 2010 Mini so it'd be nice to have an alternative to the Fiesta.

Also kind of a shame that a less realistic (presumably less good, going by reviews online) game has licensing for WRC; NASCAR all over again! If they had rights to WRC, then I'd be more confident the long term goals with Dirt Rally would include stages from every current rally location (5/13 the way there after Sweden though... think Greece got in as a classic that they happened to already have the necessary documentation to recreate from past titles like Pike's Peak mixed surface).

Interesting Codemasters news this afternoon, the studio that made the Battle Decks games has been closed down so the company can focus on racing titles. Dirt Rally gets specific mention in the statement.

quote:

While it's been great to explore projects outside of racing, we know that our hearts belong to racing in all its many glorious forms. The success of DiRT Rally's Early Access programme has been incredible, F1 2015 was very successful reaching number one in many territories, we've recently announced that Micro Machines will come to mobile and we have a strong road map ahead of us that keeps racing as its razor focus.

With Battle Decks' development complete, we're saying goodbye to Malta and looking to fold talent from its 11-person team into our most successful studios here in the UK as we double-down on racing to develop future titles that will demonstrate our absolute commitment to the category.

Granted this isn't too different from when they set up the Codemasters Racing label in 2012 after Operation Flashpoint crashed and burned but here's hoping.

The Peugeot 205 is hilariously good. I decided to not bother with the MG Metro on my Group B revisit (having already decided to not bother with the Audi either) so I finished out my in-progress championship with the Peugeot and one stage I went off, "hit" an official so I got reset, and still (with a presumably 15 second penalty) one-upped the Master AI by about 10 seconds that stage. Granted, FWIW, the Master AI seems exceptionally slow in Group B compared to most.

I have ABS at 5 and am not sure how much it helps (pretty sure the brakes still lock up in those instances where you entirely miss a turn call and freak out full brake trying to not die); everything else is off*, even have gotten used to UI-less now so I get 16% bonus creds. :D Think Simmoniti is just bad and/or excessively cautious on Wales; I beat him on it the previous League Championship using Group A's. I fully expect him to wreck all of us the rest of the way.

Nope, I use a Dual Shock 3 pretending it's an Xbox 360 controller. Still on the fence over getting a wheel (not sure it'd work well with my current normal desk/chair and costs escalate considerably from an entry-level wheel to sort that out), but last night I noticed myself skidding a lot due to turning the wheel further than necessary (hard to not with a joystick) so I imagine (once getting used to it) it'd improve times a good deal on that alone for tarmac at least.

* Haven't tampered with the controller settings at all either; using whatever the game Defaulted to.

Also, is there a way for the game to assign automatically the shifter type controls based on the car I'm driving? As in, H shifter and clutch where applicable, swap to sequential where the car only has that?

Been fine for me whenever I've tried to go on. Speaking of the Dirt site there's a new Road Book. The highlights.

- The physical release is real, but they clearly can't say anything explicitly confirming it just yet so it's all wink-wink-nudge-nudge for now.
- That's about it. Release candidates are in final testing from the looks of things though. A few people in the gossip thread have played it and they say the stages look great, the FFB is hugely improved and they can't talk about the VW Polo that may or may not be coming. Lot of photos of Polos (the mints) in there though.

E: Did the league rally and while I didn't record my run, I did record the the replay of the first stage with the Metro sliding all over the place. This may be my new favourite car.
