Does anyone have a link to that video where a bunch of yokels say a bunch of gross racist bullshit and vote against their best interest despite collecting food stamps? I need it for arguing on the Internet since since the arguing has become futile.

That's become my litmus for how much conservatives actually care about something, and not a lot have actually passed. One thing that's always baffled me about conservatives I've met is that they incessantly scream about how the homeless choose to be homeless and destitute by being lazy. Then you point out a poo poo load of them are, you know, vets with legitimate mental health issues and you can tell their internal narrative has screeched to a halt. On one hand we must gently caress the poor as hard as we can. On the other hand many of them are vets and we should not be loving vets as hard as we can. But yeah that's another one; "OK so let's fund the VA better!" and the response is "no more taxes, ever, at all in fact let's cut taxes again." Because everything went so well last time we did.

I love how any response I give to people will inevitably involve a response about Obama, Hillary Clinton or the "mainstream liberal media". Even if I never mention any news organization or any politician, they always get brought up. Team sports mentality is a mental hell apparently. Obama or Hillary are behind everything. The media is behind everything.

I love when this one pops up because it truly shows how little these people know about social programs. Not only do these straw people sound pretty responsible by using social programs to their advantage which they are set up for, but to get any money from welfare as well as food stamps you have to have a job. To get grants from school you have to attend and pass classes. Also them saying hey make sure that if you're pregnant that we make sure we can get a few things that will help up take care of the child is like the most responsible thing you can do. They sound like pretty decent people.

I don't know, how about asking the senators and representatives that voted down the funding for it? It's pretty obvious which side of the aisle they're on, and it sure as poo poo isn't the side that came up with those programs in the first place. You got shitbags like Tom Coburn out there that do there best to gently caress over the social programs designed to help seniors, vets, and the homeless. I always find this bitching about this stuff mysterious. They really seriously don't give a poo poo about these groups of people they're just bitching because people that aren't white are being helped about the gov't. If they did sincerely care about ARE TROOPS and ARE SENIORS? Then not a single GOP member of congress would exist right now.

FuzzySkinner posted:I don't know, how about asking the senators and representatives that voted down the funding for it? A lot of it just willful ignorance/actual ignorance. You see things like the belief that if taxes are lowered than people give more money to charity so obviously cutting taxes is how you take care of the unfortunate/old. There is also the very common view that the government is completely, totally, 100% incapable of actually doing anything right ever so you don't lose anything by cutting those programs anyway. The belief is that churches are better at charity than the government so cut taxes and let churches and the wealthy have more money so they can help people because they're better at it. The racism angle plays into it too; they think of black people when they think of the homeless so gently caress the homeless. The assumption is that every homeless person is a lazy black man who refuses to work so he can smoke crack literally all day every day. It also often plays into the whole "nuclear family = best family" ideal. Once again the argument is that it isn't the government's job to do these things and that those programs actually hurt people by tearing apart black families. Once again the nuclear family ideal of the 1950's would lead people to form actual family units, stick together, and take care of each other. It's all pining for a fantasy version of America that never existed while using that longing to gently caress over everybody that isn't rich. It's all a narrative carefully created to funnel more money into the pockets of the obscenely rich.

The_Rob posted:Or we can all share all the food that was made evenly, and what ever is left over can be distributed amongst everyone as well. It really shows that selfishness in the mindset. It's all about the other taking away their stuff, no real regard to how that stuff will then be utilized. The taken food would have to be given to some homeless people or something for this demonstration to work at least a little as intended. By having the person just have it all to themselves they really represent the super-rich more than anything.

So is whining about politics and trying to land sick burns on your relatives who are more liberal/conserative than you a real thing people do at Thanksgiving, or does it only exist in retweets? Arguing about politics on a family meal just seems dumb - just be casual and enjoy the food and company?

Yes. It happens everywhere. There's always that family member that lacks any sense of tact who thinks they're bringing intelligent conversation to the party by referencing a dumb political topic in a hyper-partisan way. Some people are so wrapped up in politics that they lose all sense of perspective. You can't mention anything to them without them having something partisan to say in response. These people honestly believe they're fantastic conversationalists and the rest of the world just can't handle their political realness. So we're all sheep for wanting to make it through a family dinner without hearing about how Bill Clinton is a rapist.
