Is it something I'd want to add anytime soon if I'm learning Mage Knight?

You'd mostly want to know the base game (minimum 2-3 plays) before adding Lost Legion, though some of the cards simply replace existing cards (one for each character, and a few erratas) that can just be put in immediately.

If you like Mage Knight, Lost Legion completes it (Krang/Shades are fine if you love it but not at the level of LL).

This complaint is really bizarre given the fact that there's nothing at all in the game about roleplaying or whatever. There aren't any figurines representing women, there aren't any mentions of gender, you don't really 'play' your character beyond the abilities they have. Maybe, maybe, in a setting that had heavy roleplaying elements, this might have some merit (no it wouldn't it's still retarded) but in a game like Pandemic, that's ridiculous.

As a kid I definitely remember there being boys who wouldn't even play as a particular colour if they thought it was too girly, I can totally imagine some guys still being like that if they never grew up.

Never actually met one myself though, so I can't confirm that for you.

Lost legion is one of the best expansions I've seen for how well it integrates with the main game. Volkare is more interesting antagonist than the dummy player, and it feels as if it should have been part of it from the start. The difficulty is pretty customizable, too. More and revised enemies and cards are always a plus, and they feel different enough from the main game. Wolfhawk is kinda meh, though. I'd say overall is pretty much worth it.

You can play with pretty much everything except Volkare form the start, and add Volkare after a couple of games.

I haven't played Pret A Porter and I love MK, so take that with a grain of salt.

Lost Legion is a really good expansion, that adds a lot to the "base game", more spells/actions/artifacts/etc. Most importantly it doubles the variety of monster tokens you can encounter, which is a huge part of the game. I would say it is essential, frankly. The other two expansions, Krang and the factions one only add optional stuff so they are less important. Lost Legion really completes the game.

I like Wolfhawk as a more finessed character; carefully picking and choosing your advanced actions, skills, etc for maximum efficiency is more rewarding with her, I think. It's only been a few plays though. Krang is profoundly :effort: to me and Bravelar I haven't even tried yet.

Lost Legion is very well done overall. If you like Mage Knight you'll love adding LL.

Another +1 for Lost Legion, with the caveat that I found it makes the game harder. Also my copy had monster tokens that were a slightly different colour to the rest and the cardstock is noticeably thinner than the cards from the base game. wizkidsproductionvalues.txt I guess. It can also make the game a bit more of a pain in the arse to teach, both because you have to deal with teaching more monster abilities but also because of the increased difficulty. I definitely would not play a Volkare scenario with new people.

I was checking out BGG for tips but was curious if any of you Chaos in the Old World owners have a tried and true method of playing the game as a two player variant.

The one that seemed to make the most sense was having a ghost player as Khorne with semi-randomised attacks/placements.

Castles of Mad King Ludwig is really fun. I won the first game I tried, mainly because I completed a few early utility rooms and stacked more bonuses.

Other than the pricing system, is Castles of Mad King Ludwig lighter on the mathiness of Suburbia? Late game Suburbia can get a little bloated with all the tiles and bonuses to keep track of (especially with 4 players). I'm curious if Castles could work with my little cousins, they would love the theme.

It's a lot more straight forward yea, all but one category of room only looks at adjacency for scoring, and the type of rooms that check everything are pretty distinct visually.

Strong theming. My girlfriend who can't stand most (better, shorter) games thinks it's the best game ever. She hates competitive games and is mostly into co op games that let her make a narrative.

It seemed pretty light to me - sort of reminded me of Carc scoring. You get points at the end of each round which are just looking at the corner of the tile and then factoring in any adjacency bonuses. At the end of the game you have to count up room types that you own and compare them to everyone else's. You then factor in individual bonus cards, which might be the most math at once, but is still just simple multiplication. It all takes place on a score track, which helps.

BGB's prices aren't as good as they used to be, their selection is still probably the most comprehensive but I find greatboardgames.ca to have better prices usually. 401 is still the best though, especially if you live in Toronto. quichegames.com is also very good, their selection isn't as big but very good prices and they have free delivery around downtown TO.

What are some good Canadian board game stores that have good/free shipping and prices? I mean, I don't mind heading to Toronto every now and then to see a friend and stock up on games, but if I could get the latest board game de jeu in a quick order online, that'd be great.

As others have mentioned, boardgamebliss.com is probably the most comprehensive site. As mentioned above, also, their prices aren't SUPER BEST but I think it might be partly due to the lovely exchange rate currently. I've also ordered from greatboardgames.ca and they are nice. Other places I have used in the past have closed up shop vOv

My favourite little monsters
Played Mysterium today. It's basically Dixit meets Clue. There are some elements I like in it, though when I'm in the mood for a board game it's not the kind of game I would play. Can't really explain why, it's just...meh. There's no sense of competition or anything like that, not even against the game itself. Like, the 'ghost' character is fighting the deck in a way, and everybody's success depends entirely on that. There's 'choice', but not really, it's just all interpretation. I don't know, it's just fell flat for me, though not because it's a bad game, per se.

It's to be fair to the market of people who roll low/high. Or maybe those with weighted dice that they're unaware of.

Super annoying: a d10 roll that succeeds on X or greater, where X is a number on the counter. (Neither X/10 to hit nor to miss). X or less to hit would be so much more convenient.

So I know we're all pretty pessimistic about board game adaptations of video games (and with good reason), but here's a thing: Michael Oracz (Neuroshima Hex) and Jakub Wisniewski (some video game designer dude) are doing a board game based on the indie game This War Of Mine:

I actually enjoyed both This War Of Mine and Neuroshima Hex (although no sane person would play the physical version when the app exists) so maybe there's a chance this won't suck. The way they're describing it does sound a bit poo poo but who knows at this point.

I played the first game of Valley of the Kings today where I lost. The winning strategy involved heavy entombing while keeping the book that lets you entomb the lowest cost card in the pyramid, and the amulet that throne rooms it. I still like the game, but I think I need a few more games to really nail down how I feel about it. The base set seems to have a few really powerful cards that can steamroll the competition.
