Truly, the pinnacle of goaltending
Grimey Drawer
The one thing that struck me funny was the accusation I was simply a mega-fanboy who spent money for attention that turned sour after CIG snubbed me.

To be honest, it's not a bad analogy.

I was already a mega-fanboy of WC, and spent a lot of money VC'ing Star Citizen, and I did this at a point where funding was sub 500k and slowing down (back when the goal was 2 mil, so yeah while I was a mega-fanboy, I was also being a bit SMART about when and how to become a part of the project). The Austin office was just off the UT main campus, and I was a 30 minute walk away from them. During the early days, I provided the monthly beer runs, monthly because I wanted to make sure they were working but also could relax at some point of the month. Peterson actually cursed me for bringing beer in early one month, this was about the time they were pushing for AC. But I did this for about a year.

I also provided a fuckton of food and snacks for one of the 24 hr livestreams, the one Gegil and I were at. That was about... $300 of food and snacks, ranging from chips to meats'n'cheeses. At the end of it, it was all gone. Scattered memories of that one, there was a lot of booze too. I was holding the camera for the interview with Chris Olivia, where Skelton told me to zoom in on the Peterson cut-out head on the wall that had a penis drawn on it. Sandi wasn't a fan of that. Skelton and his dicks, Olivia and his art. Loved those two.

The move to Bee Cave wasn't a snub, it was a welcome relief, because that basement was a sweatbox. As convenient as it was for me to swing by, it was a relief that the guys had space to actually work. I could still swing by and chat up with Eric/Skelton/Pete/Smith/etc whenever, it was simply a 20 minute longer drive, and I couldn't stay until rush hour because I'd be stuck in traffic till the end of days. I'm not going to make myself unwelcome, because at the time I was still set on maintaining a good relationship with the Santa Monica chapter of SC (they were calling the shots more and more often).

No, the snubbing started with the constant crunches, before PAX Boston's event. Eric simply had no time to spare, and everyone in the pits were crushed with work. I ran into a few CIG workers at Fry's, one of them on a week's vacation. They looked ragged as gently caress. Again, as I've said before, this is part of the industry and it isn't all fun all the time. But we're talking about a crunch in the middle meat of development, one that was obviously making GBS threads down on everyone. Inexplicable crunchtime for a loving external show demo. At the event, away from the other Goons (Drewjitsu,B4tBG, Stalkrr, Darth, etc), I talked to Ortwin center back on the balcony, talking about money and progress. We disagreed on shutting off the fund-raising, I saying that we need a hard limiter on what we can do, and him saying cutting off capital to spite the project is ludicrous.

After that, Eric's exit. Rob's exit. Olivia and Jason's exit. Forrest's relocation. The ex-Blizzard replacement could not find time to talk to me because, in his words, "I have no time for one of Roberts' moneybags to be looking over my shoulder." You can imagine I completely understood his position, and I left the man the gently caress alone. Then that guy left.

Tony Z was a last chance to figure out what was going on with the project from a high view. The man was always on a call from Santa Monica whenever I came by. Without fail. Always talking to Santa Monica on video skype or phone or something.

And I guess that's when it hit me. Everyone was working on something that had been done before. Smith was on the Connie, the art pit was redo-ing interiors for hangars, Skelton got to show off maybe 1 new thing, like the door security scanner particle effects, but ain't going to find it's way into the game for a long time. Everyone was repeating work done a year before. There was nothing new to talk about.

THERE WAS NOTHING NEW TO TALK ABOUT.

Ben wasn't saying poo poo, Pugh was quiet but honest, CR and Ortwin didn't say a drat word to me. The project stagnated.

Then Derek started shouting, and you know the rest.

So yeah, I think I was a mega-fanboy that felt snubbed, and quit SC when it was cool to do so. That's a simplified, but still apt, version of it, yeah.

Also 3000 Miles to Graceland is KC's best masterpiece.

Maybe Derek's master plan is to go into CIG and get those millions back with KC, myself, B4tBG, and Legal the Dog a la the casino heist.

There's so much fail in AtV, I can't go 1 min without a WTF moment.

If I weren't so goddamn lazy I'd collate all of them in a FtV effortpost .

Here's one picked at random (about the animation pipeline that's so clearly hosed):

JC: Absolutely. MotionBuilder is a huge part of our pipeline. There are some things that Maya simply does better or it’s easier to get results from and so making that part of our pipeline was a huge process. But we certainly don’t want to remove MotionBuilder because there are some tools in there that are just fantastic.

BC: Yeah, that’s cool. What you got coming up next as far as characters and what you’re pushing on?

JC: So right now we’re pushing on stuff, basically getting the right structure for Mark Hamill: we’re gathering a lot of data on what would give him the best presence in the game. Because he’s such a huge part, right, we want to make sure that when he’s on set, on stage, he has a huge presence. And so we’re trying to make sure we give that to the player. But the only way to do this is to collect data and show it and see what works best.

Multimillion dollar mocap -> Hundreds+ (probably thousands) of man hours of farting around in a broken Maya and/or MoBu pipeline to figure out just how to mocap the mocap? COOL USE OF BACKER FUNDS BROS.

I'm sure a lot of people know this, but holy poo poo mo-cap is not a turn key solution. It will look like absolute loving garbage if you don't have the right people with the right pipeline doing it. It will look, in fact... a lot like Star Citizen looks.

So the schadenfreude on top of the schadenfreude here is that they got Mark Hamill in for a mo-cap session they might not actually have the skills to make proper use of. I can't think of a better example of a sunk cost fallacy than doing mo-cap sessions for an MMO space ship game that might not actually end up being usable. You know they're going to pour the resources in to "fix," it since for some reason, it's really important to mo-cap Hollywood actors for a space ship MMO.

Without addressing the specifics of your opening paragraph (because ugh)-- I think you're generally correct.

The Org Chart has Chris at the helm, but for all his glory and power at CIG, he very much seems at the mercy of Sandi's demands. The mechanisms of her control over him are kind of irrelevant-- however that control was/is attained, she's got it, and wields it incredibly effectively. Because Chris does what she wants, even when it causes him grief (letting Wingman go, apparently) or familial tension (Sandi making demands of Erin?), embarrassment ("you're not going to just let the Escapist and those traitor $&%#'s get away with this are you, Chris?! ARE YOU?! WRITE A LETTER and DEFEND ME!!!")

The re-centralization in Santa Monica and gutting of Austin made no business sense-- it was absolutely a huge waste of backer money and time. Real estate, dev talent, employee costs of living are all much pricier there-- yet it served Sandi's purposes of making herself the Star of Star Citizen and of rebooting that acting career she never quite managed to get off the ground.

One of the ironies of this is that she all but admits that their marriage itself came about as a result of her as a young, hungry Aussie actress flipping through the proverbial Australian Movie Industry phone book and find Chris's name as the Boy Wonder Director with a Costner project underway at Ascendant Studios. If he'd been at Descendant Pictures, she might've gone after some other director at a film company that started with "B"-- and Star Citizen, its hour never arriving, wouldn't be slouching towards Beta to be stillborn...

Sandi is a symptom of the problems over at CIG. She is not the root cause. Star Citizen might be slightly different, but still probably just as hosed as without her. Roberts dev history demonstrates this point pretty well.

There's a serious organizational smell when a dude hires his wife and then brother to work at his company. There are certain situations where that's a legit good business decision. This isn't one of them. Roberts, himself, appears to value loyalty above any other skill sets. That's dangerous.

I know everybody loves to hate on Sandi for being awful, but she's only there because Chris hired her. Let's not pretend Chris would be some kind of game dev organizational genius if not for the influence of that "hussy."

They could be people who bought in on the grey market. It's also highly likely they've drunk the Flavor Aid, and they assumed their purchases might increase in value over time rather than decrease. Getting money back through a refund is the domain of failures. Getting money back through a grey market sale is recouping costs or profit-taking. It's real real stupid to think like that, but I guarantee everything posted there is posted in the hope they might be able to make a small profit off the next sucker.

She's gonna break into The Industry any day now. Why you gotta be a bully?

I hate everything she represents. The people who love acting and art find outlets to do it. Cameras are cheap. Editing is either cheap or a nominal cost. Community theater is a thing that exists. She's playing it old school, though, and that exposes her true intentions. She's delusional enough to think there's still money in acting for someone like her. There could be. It takes a lot more skill than she'll ever have, though. It requires doing more than trying to back your way into The Industry by shaking hands with Mark Hamill.

This idea that all you have to do is meet the right people to be successful in an industry really annoys me. I've met a lot of cool loving people in the games industry. It hasn't led to a pay day, but I wasn't loving looking for a pay day when I met them. I was doing my loving job and enjoying my job. People like Sandi who spend so much effort trying to weasel their way into an industry instead of doing the real work annoy the poo poo out of me.

If they spent half the effort on entering the industry legitimately than they spent on trying to back door their way in they'd already be successful*.

*They could probably eat. They wouldn't be rich. They wouldn't be famous. I bet that's a pretty big deal breaker for someone like her!

Even regardless of whether you agree that delays are acceptable or not, or what the stated vision of the game is etc. That stuff is NOT ok in any industry when your company does not have a released product yet.

Does all that crap end up in Sandi's house after liquidation or what?

Oh, I'm sure Sandi's house is already furnished with Restoration Hardware products exclusively.
