The one thing that struck me funny was the accusation I was simply a mega-fanboy who spent money for attention that turned sour after CIG snubbed me.

To be honest, it's not a bad analogy.

I was already a mega-fanboy of WC, and spent a lot of money VC'ing Star Citizen, and I did this at a point where funding was sub 500k and slowing down (back when the goal was 2 mil, so yeah while I was a mega-fanboy, I was also being a bit SMART about when and how to become a part of the project). The Austin office was just off the UT main campus, and I was a 30 minute walk away from them. During the early days, I provided the monthly beer runs, monthly because I wanted to make sure they were working but also could relax at some point of the month. Peterson actually cursed me for bringing beer in early one month, this was about the time they were pushing for AC. But I did this for about a year.

I also provided a fuckton of food and snacks for one of the 24 hr livestreams, the one Gegil and I were at. That was about... $300 of food and snacks, ranging from chips to meats'n'cheeses. At the end of it, it was all gone. Scattered memories of that one, there was a lot of booze too. I was holding the camera for the interview with Chris Olivia, where Skelton told me to zoom in on the Peterson cut-out head on the wall that had a penis drawn on it. Sandi wasn't a fan of that. Skelton and his dicks, Olivia and his art. Loved those two.

The move to Bee Cave wasn't a snub, it was a welcome relief, because that basement was a sweatbox. As convenient as it was for me to swing by, it was a relief that the guys had space to actually work. I could still swing by and chat up with Eric/Skelton/Pete/Smith/etc whenever, it was simply a 20 minute longer drive, and I couldn't stay until rush hour because I'd be stuck in traffic till the end of days. I'm not going to make myself unwelcome, because at the time I was still set on maintaining a good relationship with the Santa Monica chapter of SC (they were calling the shots more and more often).

No, the snubbing started with the constant crunches, before PAX Boston's event. Eric simply had no time to spare, and everyone in the pits were crushed with work. I ran into a few CIG workers at Fry's, one of them on a week's vacation. They looked ragged as gently caress. Again, as I've said before, this is part of the industry and it isn't all fun all the time. But we're talking about a crunch in the middle meat of development, one that was obviously making GBS threads down on everyone. Inexplicable crunchtime for a loving external show demo. At the event, away from the other Goons (Drewjitsu,B4tBG, Stalkrr, Darth, etc), I talked to Ortwin center back on the balcony, talking about money and progress. We disagreed on shutting off the fund-raising, I saying that we need a hard limiter on what we can do, and him saying cutting off capital to spite the project is ludicrous.

After that, Eric's exit. Rob's exit. Olivia and Jason's exit. Forrest's relocation. The ex-Blizzard replacement could not find time to talk to me because, in his words, "I have no time for one of Roberts' moneybags to be looking over my shoulder." You can imagine I completely understood his position, and I left the man the gently caress alone. Then that guy left.

Tony Z was a last chance to figure out what was going on with the project from a high view. The man was always on a call from Santa Monica whenever I came by. Without fail. Always talking to Santa Monica on video skype or phone or something.

And I guess that's when it hit me. Everyone was working on something that had been done before. Smith was on the Connie, the art pit was redo-ing interiors for hangars, Skelton got to show off maybe 1 new thing, like the door security scanner particle effects, but ain't going to find it's way into the game for a long time. Everyone was repeating work done a year before. There was nothing new to talk about.

THERE WAS NOTHING NEW TO TALK ABOUT.

Ben wasn't saying poo poo, Pugh was quiet but honest, CR and Ortwin didn't say a drat word to me. The project stagnated.

Then Derek started shouting, and you know the rest.

So yeah, I think I was a mega-fanboy that felt snubbed, and quit SC when it was cool to do so. That's a simplified, but still apt, version of it, yeah.

Also 3000 Miles to Graceland is KC's best masterpiece.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-Z-4X4z564

Maybe Derek's master plan is to go into CIG and get those millions back with KC, myself, B4tBG, and Legal the Dog a la the casino heist.

I wanted to tell you that I read your post and am happy for you and fuzz that you got out with - surprisingly little - problems.

It's all right here. This is just ONE episode of AtV. Animator flat-out says they need to keep re-doing the rigging and it fucks their mo-cap data.

quote:

DL: Give us a better idea about what you do as an animator for Star Citizen.

VL: Well here at Star Citizen in particular we do motion capture most of the time. That’s markering up actors, and getting them ready to do performances for us to use in game.

DL: Yeah?

VL: Yeah. So that’s what I do. I actually run the local motion capture system here and I also solve the data and I also bring it on to our Star Citizen characters that we have right now.

DL: You just said solve the data. What’s that?

VL: So when we have a motion capture shoot, we shoot our actors performance with their markers on. The cameras capture these movements with the markers and the data gets translated into something that we call a C3D data and then we bring that into MotionBuilder and do what is called a retarget and we do that to the characters that we are given and then we start the fun editing.

DL: I’ve seen a lot of emails about retargeting animations that seems, I don’t know much about it but from the emails that I’m CC on that seems like quite a task.

VL: It is when you have a vast amount of animations to do so whenever there is this change to the skeleton we need to do constant retargets and so that’s what the all the emails are about sometimes.

DL: Recently we changed the skeleton front model. So you had to take all those existing animations that have been recorded for the previous skeleton, retarget them for the new one?

VL: Yes that is correct

Well, I think I should let people in on a condition in the referral program that I missed.

I though it would be a great time to try and get some more people in if they could get a $30 pack, and I might get a chance at these referral rewards (I had most people I knew invested before the referral program)

One person got a $30 pack.. but they still came up as a 'prospect' on my account details.
I though it just might be a time delay.. checked again later... nope... still in Prospects...
I'm confused at this point, as I can see from there that they have enlisted...

Fixing our slow-as-hell, pathetically subpar and disorganized China-based merchandising / shipping operation so the fans can get stuff more quickly?

"Screw it-- who cares if it takes a month to deliver things, and our shipper loses loads of inventory often, and fans who get broken / misprinted / subpar merch end up having to wait 3-5 weeks to get through the support queue, after waiting just as long for delivery, whereupon they'll wait yet another month to get a replacement? Let them think China is actually a brilliant solution delivering higher quality stuff than America or Europe can match and it's worth the wait. Because that means we can squeeze even more bucks out of their sperg asses."

For Sandi, the only measure of CIG's success is cash in the bank and furnishings in the Santa Monica office (and surely the Roberts home / life). Screw quality of support, product, or game or workplace experience. Keep the money rolling in at all costs. Everyone else -- backers, employees, other offices -- can suck it.

It's always difficult to be sure from the outside but I'm fairly sure the delay on customer service tickets was a choice and not due to a shortage of staff. For a long time they handled customer service with 1 and 1/2 people, they have 4 or 5 now and back then you'd get a response the same day, sometimes within the hour. The issues haven't really got more difficult, most of the time you are copying and pasting responses, if anything they've had time to speed things up due to knowledge of the issues and more information to point to on the marketing site.

The delay on refunds make sense as if you want to drag any refund process out for a month or longer, people might change their minds or will be more likely to accept a lowball offer. You can delay everything to support the "swamped customer support" image as in the end happy people just want to give you money in various different ways and if they wait they'll probably buy something else anyway, gently caress the unhappy ones they're unhappy anyway. They have already said that if you have a problem buying something during a sale and log a ticket, they'll sort out whatever your issue is and provide whatever was on sale even after the sale has ended. So they can control cash flow to some extent through tickets too.

Also this backlog started when Chelsea left and the feeling I got was, stupid as it all was, she thought answering people quickly was important.

There's a new ccu system too which should have lifted a lot of the burden. So even with thousands of tickets you could clear the backlog in a week assuming you wanted to.

There is a reason the FTC says don't loving do MLM as a public service because its loving evil and most of the time a cover up for actual pyramid schemes.

"Steer clear of multilevel marketing plans that pay commissions for recruiting new distributors. They're actually illegal pyramid schemes. Why is pyramiding dangerous? Yeah man, I mean, ponzi scheme is puffing it up a bit but.. forcing your "baseline backer" to "upsell" in order to gain "credit" towards the "next level" is just... How is this happening in a video game? This is literally MLM!! And never mind that the "Chairman" said the game was fully funded 50M dollars ago.

400k from the Phoenix yesterday, the impact is already wearing off. They didn't have the redesigned Phoenix to show on Around the Verse so it's obviously nowhere near ready as that would have been the time to show it.

Everything from this week goes on sale again later today, should see a slight bump from weekend sales but the real money is in the first couple of hours of something they haven't sold before/recently so unsure how they'll do maybe 250-400k average over next 3 days. I think they'll keep the sale going on Monday, might make an extra $150k.

I wonder who's idea the new daily superpack of ships was, didn't seem to work too well and possibly reinforced the idea that CIG is desperate for money. They could have shifted some real numbers of the Glaive & Idris if they'd sold them individually, also the decision not to include the phoenix cross chassis upgrades that they sold last year is also very questionable. The number limited phoenix sale isn't going to fool that many people and it's going to be a bit of a let down for those that did fall for it when/if not all 5000 sell. People like to think they got something in demand and that's hard to believe if they don't sell out.

All in all I enjoyed the sale, best bit of the gameplay and nice to see them loving it up for a change, for a long time they were like a well oiled machine at maximising income from the sales. Lot harder now that LTI has lost it's shine and nobody believes "this is a one time sale of this sperghat".

Back to the animations circus. This is awesome. Remember, every change to the skeleton requires massive updates to ALL their mocap data.

quote:

JH: Now why did we change the skeleton?

DP: The main reason why we change the skeleton is because we wanted to get the portions just right so that they match and the… I don’t know, sort of that balance between the average and ideal human you know.

JH: Okay

Can't even come up with a single sensical reason :homebrew:

quote:

VL: Whatever you know. The dances man it’s just whatever gets people to have fun. That’s what we want we want to just add content to kind of allow people to express themselves in whatever way they want. Be it through interpretative dance or flipping you off whatever.

DL: Do you put every dance you get into the game or have there been dances where you were like that’s just too much?

VL: Well you know we do do select of course. Not everything we shoot on the mocap stage makes it through so my director may lead a review of all the data with me or by themselves and then they give it to me and go “This is what I want you to do” or “Why don’t you edit this and then we’ll see how it looks in game” So it’s really like a lot of testing sometimes and then sometimes it’s just like no we’re not using that.

This just sounds like :shrek:

Also, heavy LOL @ "my director." That translates to "Chris Roberts micromanages everything I do and it's like, whatever, you know? Groundhog Day. You know?"

2.6 million from 100 million.

Assume 300k for next 3 days, 200k on Monday.

1.5 million to make in December, there'll have to be a new LTI concept ship sale in December, probably announced on Monday December 14th. Chris Roberts is going to be shouting at someone "I want my loving 100 million this year dammit!".

-also,
Ok, last quote from AtV and I'm going to bed. I swear, these AtV transcripts are a loving goldmine of horse poo poo.

More talk about animation, a "senior" animation dev trying to show us how far they've come from their humble start to the SEVENTH version of the character rig.

quote:

DP: Let’s see if I can find a full body fix so you can see the whole thing here. So once we get it all sewn together, you’ll have a complete… Adam said that’s updated and so we just want to keep it squeaky clean so it looks like the guys actually sitting in the chair, he’s actually picking up the cups, he’s not hovering over everything and going through. Now retargeting is a little more difficult with ships.

I’ll drag this over here, this is probably helpful. For about nine months, one of the things I was doing was I took on a second job of doing ship fittings and that was going through and evaluating what was done with the cockpits and how all that stuff worked with the characters.

[drivel, um... drivel]

If we put a new character in here and the spine is shorter or taller, then that affects the entire chair, it could affect the controls and things like that, we want to avoid it as much as possible. I wasn’t on the project early on, I’ve only been here a little over a year and these are things that the teams discovered that they need to address and head off, so moving forward we shouldn’t have anymore of these problems.

JH: That’s game development.

DP: It’s game development. They’ve got this template here, this is a dual stick template. Now we have I think 7 different types now that are standardized across to be used for all current and future ships. Anyway

JH: I know know a lot of people are very interested in our dance animations.

DP: The dance? *laughs* Yeah the dance stuff. Yeah ok.

:gary: DON'T WORRY GUYS!! THAT'S GAME DEVELOPMENT!! :yarg:

And now, DANCE!! :lesnick:

I worked in a Canadian office once that had Eye Strain software installed it was terrible.

So I asked the SC forums if it can be implemented in the game.

Let's see where this one is going.

A few posts in and they were already redefining what an addiction is. Clearly, you just redefine problems until they aren't problems anymore, that is how you justify dumping a few thousand into pictures of spaceships and not wanting to tell your partner, friends or family about it. It's totally not because you're ashamed in anyway, oh no.

My hopes are to run instances of SC on the same PC with 2 monitors. My plan is way too intricate for me to feel like typing... but there are numerous benefits. Always has been and always will be. I did it in EQ CoH SWG WoW CO and STO and i will do it in SC too. Oh and diablo 2 i did it as well.
Edit: Saw other posts about kids. Mine are already training to gun my turrets. Skylanders (giants, swap force and trap team) all have places to go and practice in a turret. My kids should be great in my turrets with an xbone elite controller. My kids are 5/3. If yours are older then maybe not skylanders. lol

janssendelt seems to be the only SC fan legitimately taking the hosed up 2.0 and sales in stride so probably deserves some kind of consolation prize or something
