I was really worried the really nice Chimp trainer (Robert?) who constantly fought for Nim's rights was going to end up being the guy who got his foot and dick ripped off by a chimp. I'm really glad that wasn't him. http://www.cbsnews.com/news/chimp-mauling-under-investigation/

It's very schticky, with Gary playing a delusional right wing manchild, so if that sounds like a good time to you, it's damned funny. It's always a good feeling to find an enjoyable podcast with a deep library.

Whats really strange is that this duo is really funny and quick witted with some genuinely great comedic timing in the podcast, Gareth is a Wizard at accents, but when I try to watch their standup they're really bland and awful, especially Gareth. I guess this was their actual calling. Jose is really stealing the show on the latest episode. Al-Saqr fucked around with this message at 16:16 on Nov 12, 2015 |

It's not such a weird thing anymore, personalities shoring up their income by doing standup shows. Adam Carolla and Michael In Black come immediately to mind, and neither of them are very good. I could see Gareth doing well on a panel type show, like QI or Never Mind the Buzzcocks. He's pretty hysterical on his other podcast. e: Artie Lange was fantastic on the Stern show, but his standup... it's something different, that's for sure.

There's plenty of comedians who are great on podcasts and terrible at standup. They're coming from two different skillsets; most podcasts tend to rely more on improv skills than writing skills, since so few of them have anything written beforehand. I don't care for Sarah Silverman's standup at all, but she's hilarious on basically any show. Doug Benson, too, on the rare occasion he does a guest spot. There's really very few people I enjoy in both standup and podcasts. Pete Holmes and Paul F. Tompkins are the only ones that come to mind.

I enjoy the podcasts of both Rogan and Burr and find their standup acts to be top tier. But a major difference is that Rogan and Burr are not trying to be funny 100% of the time on their podcasts; Rogan in particular is trying to host a show. In both the Dollup and PVP, Gary is trying to be funny every time he opens his mouth (giiiiirl), and he is extremely successful at it.

I honestly generally can't stand standup comedian podcasts (I guess the Bone Zone was my exception for a while, but for humor I'd rather go in the UYD/MBMBAM direction) they generally just seen kinda try hard or conventional with their humor and vibes, like there's no way I'd be listening to Dave and Gary doing a straight up non-historical comedy podcast but I guess that why I like the Dollop. p.s. I would definitely support a Boardwalk Empire style HBO drama about america's hate/love affair with straw hats. Also the Bald Knobbers. FINGER SHOOTERS, GO! I felt the same way during the Monitor/Merrimack episode, but, like, I read a shitton. I don't think Gary reads many history books. It really is a miracle that Gage survived the hit, what with filthy 1800s medical tech.

The weird thing about the Dollop is it's more of a history podcast for me than a comedy podcast. Like, I enjoy Dave and Gary, but they're not really like, stunningly amazing comedians I've realized over the duration of this show (which I do love). I mean they're okay, they're not the type of humorists I'd normally be listening to on a podcast. They just kind of do these clunky jokes about retarded people and the Irish and sometimes funny accents, very VERY basic poo poo, it's just that the premise of the show and the historical stories are just so great that it carries (sometimes) average to mediocre banter. I mean don't get me wrong, when it hits it hits, Dave and Gary have had me roaring in laughter before, but often I'm just like silently processing a failed meandering jokey joke of theirs and waiting for them to get back into the story. Which is why I'm glad when it's a story I'd never even heard of like the Bayou of Pigs and a lot of other eps and less thrilled when it's like "Oh, Phineas Gage. Okay. Yeah, that's like all over the internet man." I'll check it out eventually. I will say a great exception for me was the Toxic Woman of Riverside, because while that's a tale that gets passed around the internet a lot, I hadn't been paying attention to it "recently" enough to have heard any of those crazy hosed up theories/conclusions about what caused it and holy poo poo. It's great when it's a familiar story but with some new development you hadn't heard of. Punkin Spunkin fucked around with this message at 19:59 on Dec 10, 2015 |
