Guessing that they're expensive because they're complex and require lots of labour to design/build as notZarr said, but it becomes an economics thing too; they cost as much as they do because people can take out loans to buy them, so they are designed to that price. IANAE but my understanding is the availability of credit to businesses and individuals was fundamental to the modern world forming as it has.
