Most of the damage when you run into poo poo isn’t from the initial collision, it’s from your thrusters continually pushing you into the wall or whatever other poo poo you’ve steered yourself into. Just kill everything and let yourself bounce around until you’ve bled off momentum and can get your bearings again.

The Warthog is a bitchin' stick but be aware you are going to need to tweak it more than most sticks because it has true flip switches and E:D doesn't have the ability to understand this by default. Lucky for us people have this all figured out and ready to go already and once you have it set up it is smooth sailing. Thanks for the advice. I've been doing some reading and I'm super excited to get this setup. I've actually been eying it since it was released. Hopefully the back order isn't too long. I'm ready to get my space flight on.

I learned the hard way that bounty rewards are tied to your ship, not to you. Lost ~800k credits worth of bounty while loving around in a RES since that pirate decided to actually hit me full force and not focus the federation guys that were in there. That would've put me at ~1.5m so I could've made a solid Viper or something to replace my Sidey.

I have buttons bound for everything, separate buttons for cargo scoop, cargo hatch, shield cells, chaff, heat sinks, silent running, all forms of thrust of course, as well as all the gun stuff, targeting each and everything, both kinds of fast pants drivin, lights sensor range etc etc etc. The down side, as mentioned before, is that many are toggles that aren't fully supported, so rather than all the metal toggle switches have an on/off, you end up just pressing them "the other way" to hit a button. Also, I have yet to figure out how to make configs from scratch, so you end up taking other people's setups and just modifying them in elite, so the fanciest custom features are not readily available. People are making custom light scripts that are potentially p cool but if you figure them out, hook me up I guess. So yeah worth it if you have money handy. Two questions of my own since I'm postin: How do you direct "tell" to people in chat? I keep seeing chat in my HUD after I log out or something, so /reply won't work, and that's the only part covered on the elite wiki. If you target somebody and press enter it will default to sending a direct message to them, otherwise you can cycle through people who have sent you a direct message/wing chat/local chat using tab (by default).

Oh man, picked this game up and bungled my way through the tutorials. The travel tutorial was the worst because I guess I was using the forward/reverse thrust buttons in combat but in FSA it only accepts input from increase/reduce thrust buttons so first I had to figure out why I couldn't enter hyperspace (was set at 50% on the speedometer and I was holding down the wrong button to get 100%) and then at the destination I kept overshooting the destination station by lightyears because I tried to brake with the reverse thrust button, but only reduce thrust is acceptable. Welp. At least I didn't crash into anything I guess

Got a C3 gimballed pulse laser and I think C3 fixed cannon, and it felt like I was a little undergunned. You could swap the pulse for a beam. A single beam won't insta-overheat you, and the cannon's heat impact is minimal so you can fire it even if you've beamed yourself to like 90% heat. Beam/Cannon is the loadout I'm using now after months of dual C3 G/Pulses and it's lots of fun and will demolish Pythons and smaller very quickly. The dual C3 G/Pulse combo is very effective, incidentally. With 3 or more pips to weapons they can fire long enough to trash any small ship or take a healthy chunk out of larger ones. I'm weaning off that though, in anticipation of 1.5 reducing laser damage against unshielded targets. When attacking an FDL/Eagle wing solo, I'll blitz one of the Eagles (ram + shoot up within a few seconds), then focus on the FDL while tanking/chaffing fire from the other Eagle. The big key is to avoid the FDL's nose (use your superb agility and directional thrusters to keep on its side/butt), because that C4 gun will smack the poo poo out of you. Once the FDL's down, then kill the other Eagle.

jaffyjaffy posted:About how much should I be looking for credit wise until I trade up out of the Sidewinder? Enough to buy the new ship, equip everything at least 'D' grade, and maybe 10% left over to pay off the insurance. And if you want to trade, enough left to buy cargo too. Don't try and get straight to a Cobra using a Sidewinder. If you like killing, focus on getting an Eagle, or for trading/smuggling, a Hauler. For just about managing to do 'everything', the cheapest option would probably be an adder like this, so about 250k+. And sell/downgrade all the ship's equipment before selling the ship.
