So I bought a nearly 60 year old engine that's been sitting on a shelf somewhere for an incredibly long time to power my daily driver 2 hours a day, 5 days a week for work. I've never built an engine before, so, expect comedy to ensue. This is all to replace the relatively new, relatively powerful 1.8L I currently have, in exchange for 1.2L producing 36 powerful ponies.

But metallic silver is an absolute bitch to match, so at the very least he's going to get a respray on the entire bumper cover, and probably a bit of blending.  My bumper cover looked like it escaped with some scratched paint and a gouge in the plastic, plus a bent license plate:  But the headlight is pushed down a bit, and the hood doesn't quite line up right (... even for a Saturn). When I parked, even in the compressed video I uploaded, you could tell that the drivers side headlight is aimed a bit higher now. The upper radiator support is also tweaked (visibly).  The point of impact on the bumper is dead center with where the metal beam sits behind the cover.Dashcam is an old G1W. Video was compressed to 480p and cut in half using Windows Movie Maker (I don't think anybody wanted to see the minute and a half leading up to the intersection), so it was compressed a bit even before YouTube got ahold of it. I was actually planning to replace the dashcam pretty soon - the internal battery is shot (it's good for about 15-20 seconds now, instead of the 5 minutes or so I used to get), and the clock runs fast enough that I have to reset it every couple of weeks (I assume from the faulty battery). But it's a $50 dashcam that's 2 years old, so I've more than gotten my money's worth out of it.

Finally got a chance to work on my garbage. Shut off on the road a week or two ago and I got it towed home. I dicked around checking spark/fuel for a while and then today finally got time to actually work on it. Well! Belt lost two teeth and slipped. With the cam stationary, the crank had slipped forwards from about 1:00 to 11:00. I cannot BELIEVE it didn't mash a valve. I murdered the coil in the process of diagnosing spark because I'm a stupid, so I swapped the coil from my 99 to get it running.

Finally finished installing the last of the interior pieces for my bus. I think after just over a year I'm going to call it officially done, and drive it until the wheels fall off (And then fix it again). I have nothing left to do to that bus besides drive it across America. I think it came out pretty alright for a fire damaged car      Vs July '14

Not pictured is the gigantic puddle of jack oil on the ground. Guess the HF instructions for bleeding the table are a little off. Filling it while at its most extended position makes the little rubber filler plug rocket out when the ram retracts under weight!

(1988 Accord LXi) Also had a belt jump on a 95 Civic by a tooth when I money shifted into 2nd instead of 4th (caught it long before it spun up high enough to do damage, but it died immediately). Mechanic said the tensioner wasn't installed properly. Also zero damage.

Today i topped of my coolant in my e39. 2 liters of it. No wonder the AC wasn't blowing any heat. As far as i can see there's no major leak or anything, i guess i just didn't check the coolant since i bought the car 2 years ago! I'm good at cars.

Spark plugs had more oil on them than the dipstick did so swapped those out. Gonna try to muster the wherewithal to change the valve stem seals this weekend and flush the motor. Tired of slowly murdering my cat.

I just had the same issue with the same fix on the same car, but i don't think i have ever been able to fully bleed the heater core loop in the entire time i've owned the car until now. It belched a whole bunch of coolant out of the filler neck, and then settled really low. 2 liters to fill it back up and it's all good.

2 new tires.... again. Discount has stopped carrying the tires I had, and the 2 or 3 cheapest tires in my size were all either out of stock or on layaway. So it got some Falken Sincera 828s. Looking at reviews now, I'm kinda wishing I'd spent a little more, but I got them for $169 out the door with road hazard, so I could have done worse. Also got the smog/safety done. Inspector told me he'd suggest coming in a month or two early next year (since there's a 90 day window to do it before you do your registration now). I told him I tried to a couple of months ago and was turned away, at the same place.  Would have made it a little easier on me, since I could have paid for the inspection a month ago and the registration this month.

I had Sinceras (can't remember the exact model number) on my BMW as "summer" tires, I autocrossed on them and generally abused the hell out of them. I have sinceras on my camry and my eacape. They have held up well on both cars. In what I did to my car news I cleared the abs light in the camry. Luckily the snap on scanner at work has the old toyota connecter. Ten minutes and the light is a problem no more.

I went and installed a bar in between the swing arms on my vair so I can roll it around while I work on the engine. I also pulled out the rear subframe so I can install the nice new urethane body to subframe and subframe to transmission bushings. Probably going to paint stuff up here or there.

Dropped it off at the body shop yesterday. Got a call a couple of hours later saying they didn't need to order anything, and were able to repair the bumper cover and radiator support - it was heading into the paint booth already. A couple of hours after that, got another call saying they had finished paint, but would let the bumper dry overnight before they did clearcoat. They told me I should be able to pick it up "sometime after lunch tomorrow" (tomorrow being now - Thursday). That's one hell of a turnaround, even for damage limited to one easily removed part. We'll see if the paint falls off in a few weeks. I sure as hell know they didn't even bother trying to blend it (Geico has already posted the bill on their claims portal), so it's a toss up on how well it'll match. fake edit: the loaner car is flex fuel, and E85 is something stupid like $1.30/gal up the street from me.

I put the studded Winterforces and new-to-me winter wheels on the Forester a while back. No snow yet, but it's coming, and now my crapcan is ready for it and also sounds like a TIE fighter. Also, attempted to fix the weird power steering issue on the GF's Roadmaster. It works fine at all times other than a cold start, sometimes when cold starting the steering wheel will be very hard to turn (exactly as if it had manual steering) for about a quarter second, sometimes it will be similarly hard to steer overcenter but only when turning right for a couple turns but then will be fine. I was hoping it had variable steering assist, since a failure in that system would easily explain this, but that option was only installed on Limited models. Best guess right now is the steering box is getting worn, since the joints in the intermediate shaft don't seem to be binding. Fortunately a reman one (A1 cardone... not sure how I feel about that) is only $108 on rockauto, even with the core charge.

Protege went to semi-winter mode. Stock wheels with all-seasons back on until the white stuff really comes down hard, then it's on to studs. it's been unseasonably mild in PA so I didn't want to go crazy and put the studs on early. Out with the summers:  In with the ugly(er):

Picked mine up from the body shop. They didn't bother with any blending (since insurance job), but they got the bumper drat close. You'd have to know that the front bumper has been repainted to notice the difference (and they were able to reuse the original bumper, with some repairs). I don't know what the hell kind of magic they worked in there, but the only sign of any gouging in the bumper is the tiniest little bump, and I can only notice it by running my hand over the part that I know they repaired. Quite literally a 24 hour turnaround - I showed up around 11:30 am, they called me around 11:45 am the next day to let me know it was ready. Even tho I have the flu I decided to hard-wire my Galaxy S6 and Nexus 7 since this is probably the last nice weekend for a while. He is my Nexus 7 running Torque. Excuse the blurry photo my hands are shaky as hell right now.

Today I finally used the Meguiars single stage headlight restoration kit. It's three pieces. A bottle of clear plastic polish, a drill cotton ball attachment and a microfibre cloth. I have no pictures of any of the components. I do however have before and after of the headlight. Before:  After three passes. There was a negligible difference between pass two and three.  I also had a box of this sitting unopened from a few years ago.  It was a three stage process. Stage one was a black pre-wax & conditioner, stage two was black carnuba wax and stage three was the black spray detailer. While it is very "zen" to wax a car effectively three times, I don't think I'll be doing it more than twice a year. It took two hours but I think it was worth it. I really really need to pick up a paint pen.  I'm also sure I should have read the detailing thread before doing any of this... Edit: I really can't spell. my e39 threw a light for the intake cam shaft sensor so i pulled it out. this is the first time i have ever reached under the hood of a car to do something that wasnt filling a fluid. i got cuts and grease on my hands. i dont have the replacement sensor yet but it sure was fun pulling out the old one.

Tried for a few hours yesterday to get them in without pulling the bumper, now I need to figure out how to pull the bumper. Dropped in an eBay third brake light to replace the cracked one, found out the bulb was hilariously blown (charred black, melted droopiness, both filaments exploded and jingling around), replaced with a spare that fit and worked (but might be a bit dim). Speedo sensor freaked out and would only display 0kph or 75kph, so I pulled it off the trans, cleaned it out as best I could without disassembling it (cheesy screws were camming out like crazy and I don't have a JIS driver), and then stuffed it with HHS lube until it stopped bubbling and ejecting dirt. Put a cheap Alpine HU in the beater Vibe because FM radio only was slowly killing me. Now I have full Bluetooth, and even sounds half decent with the stock speakers. Also a few weeks ago spliced a line in connection using the CD changer input in the C5. Good stuff.
