Holy poo poo that's hilarious. It would also be the best way to get T2 if it were still in print, since you'd get the best transfers of the actual movie (Skynet blu-ray and Extreme DVD) and all the extras from the Ultimate DVD (the other versions are completely bare-bones except for Extreme coming with a 720p Windows Media file of T2 on a separate disc, which was nice at the time but... antiquated now).

Pretty sure it was actually 1080p and definitely didn't have enough bitrate to warrant that resolution. Was rad as hell and my only HD movie for a real long time. I'm glad I hung on to my Ultimate Edition, though. Just wish I'd gotten it early enough to get the metal slipcover.

I only own The General but Kino always does a good job with these things. They don't overprocess their transfers so there's minor film damage but the added clarity of seeing a nearly 90 year old film in HD is worth it.

The special features on the Ultimate DVD are ridiculous, back before special features were standardized into a 9-minute "behind the scenes" promo fluff piece and maybe some bloopers.
It had a SCENE-BY-SCENE shooting diary for the film along with screenshots, as well as breakdowns of every VFX shot in the movie. A lot of it is text, but it's ridiculously in-depth.

Yeah, there's only like 10 duds in that set so $2.49 per movie for a Blu-Ray and UV copy is really good deal. Even better if you don't care about the UV code and sell that to offset the cost more.

It's probably getting a plain case repackage. The first edition was a digipak with The Battle for Citizen Kane and RKO 281 (both on DVD), then a digibook second edition that left off those two discs.

I jumped for the Amazon exclusive that included The Magnificent Ambersons.

The people who did the grindhouse release might know a lot about scanning 35mm film, but they're kind of idiots about encoding the finished product. The most widely available version was encoded as a 24Mbps AVC with the High 4:2:2@L4 profile. The 4:2:2 is the sticking point here - I don't think anything supports hardware decoding of 4:2:2 video, so you need to watch it on something powerful enough to decode it in software. They later took some advice and released a fixed encode with more sane settings, but as far as I can tell that's only available on a private torrent site which isn't inviting new members.

So your options are basically:
  • If your computer is fast enough, configure your codecs to use software decoding or use VLC.
  • Find the second release with the fixed encode.
  • Use handbrake or something similar to re-encode the file into something playable. This will take a long time if you want the results to still look good.
