So far, my experience with citi has not been great. I applied for a card a month ago and I am still stuck in ID verification hell because they insist on doing everything by fax or snail mail. They asked my for a landline phone bill when I've never owned a wired telephone in my life. It sounds like different departments are run better, however.

Found the TV I bought by model number, then added the purchase date, location, and price. If they find a lower price within 60 days you're notified to apply for the refund and upload a copy of the receipt. You can get a check or statement credit once the approve the refund.

I just wanted to share my experience with Capitol One with you guys. In march of this year, I got a capitol one secured card with a 300 limit (paid 150) - I had been making only 18$ / hour at that time, and had a 2009 car repo at $5200, 3 unpaid judgements for $2500 from 2009, 8 collection accounts from 2007-2012 and 6 credit inquiries, no credit nothing. 410 FICA Score - I got the balance to $35 every month and paid it down to $5 when they sent me the reminder it was due. Did that till August , then paid another $100 to take my balance to $500. Paid off the lowest hanging creditors and let the ones about to fall off do so. As of 3 days ago doing this, I still had the 3 judgements (they are paid now but not showing as paid), still have the repo, and still have 4 collections, but $0 balance. (and 7k in debt from the repo and judgements) It took my Fica to 685 or so, just doing that. Talked to Capitol One about increasing the secured card and instead they gave me a Capitol One Quicksilver Visa Platinum with a $3000 limit , no fees and a guaranteed increase in a few months. I could not be happier with the way it has worked out with them and I can't recommend them enough for someone rebuilding credit. They offered to increase my secured card to $1000 also, but I decided to just cancel, the hit from it is trivial since I have had the card only 9 months. They haven't charged me any fee at all that I am aware of, maybe a few cents here and there. So yeah, rebuilding credit is totally doable if you are patient. I got my wife on my new card, who is in the process of Chapter 7 bankruptcy (50k in medical bills), so shes going to come out of that with 3k in credit to start repairing the dumpster fire that is her report. warcraft_boyfriend_99 fucked around with this message at 14:23 on Nov 30, 2015 |

Weird experience just now with Citi credit cards. I called to cancel my American Airlines card since I have the Barclays product, they're essentially the same card, and the Barclays card is cheaper. Plus, I figure I can sign back up for the Citi card in 18 months or whatever and get the bonus again. Did the entire thing through the IVR system. No retention specialist or anything. Just, "Are you sure?", "Fine, done, do you want a confirmation text?" Seems odd that there wasn't any system to try and stop me from leaving. I guess someone ran the numbers and decided it wasn't worth it, but still, surprising. Also, I upped my credit limit on said Barclays card via their website, got a call about an hour later on the request from a human being, spoke with them for a minute, then was approved for some of what I asked for (I asked big, always ask big). BarclayCard has been surprisingly good to deal with. Their website, while garish, works really well, they actually support Chip&Pin, and a human has called me when necessary. Neither Citi nor Chase have ever bothered to make a retention offer for me when I cancel their products. Similar to what you said, I probably wasn't profitable enough to bother paying more to keep me around.

Unless they've recently fixed it, if you were upgraded to the platinum world elite citi AA card (I think everyone is automatically after about 2 months or so) you can reapply and get the bonus again. The system sees the world elite as a different product than the world card so you can effectively bypass the 18 month bonus waiting period. I did it successfully twice this year, others have done it 3 times already

In 2014, I had Chase offer me $200 in credit to cover my $95 fee on their United Mileage Plus card. I had spent $30,000 on the card in the 12-month period. That's the only offer I've received.

I thought they just sent me a new card with a chip, but it was actually the upgrade. Check the back of your card, above the mastercard logo, see if it says "world elite". Applied and got another citi aa card yesterday (like 6 months after first one). Now the challenge is actually using the points before the march devaluation. Apparently its impossible to get more than 1 seat in first on cathay pacific to asia (and no seats are available on AA international itself in first or business). Looking around its pretty drat hard to get 3 seats even in business flying nearly anywhere on anything AA partnered. Maybe its because everyone is booking everything up right now before the devaluation. I would just look to use them on short-haul flights after the program changes, but apparently the only airport in range of denver for those flights is Vegas. Which is already dirt cheap.

You could try clearing cookies/opening incognito browser Windows and hope to get lucky, but I haven't heard of anyone getting the 100k offer that way lately. Amex's offers also seem to scale based on whether or not you are an existing customer. Maybe try running their pre-approval tool a few times in an incognito window? Is there a card that gives sign up cash back or other initial rewards points in the $1500 spend in the first X months range? I have an expense coming up in January that I'd like to get something back for. I've already done Chase Freedom and Quicksilver for their $150 intro bonuses. I probably won't get to the $4000 in 3 months for Sapphire, otherwise I'd do that. 0% intro APR would be nice too but not necessary.

Well, the first step would be not to have applied for 3 credit cards with a 605 FICO. But, now that that is out of the way, it sounds like you may need to get a secured credit card and build up credit slowly. These offer you a credit line of a low amount (say $500) that you prepay and once you establish a good payment history, banks don't see you as that much of a risk. You can probably do it over 9 months to a year by spending responsibly on it. Do you know a family member with good credit that would trust your responsibility to make you an authorized user on one of their longstanding credit cards? If your low credit score is only a function of a lack of history, then it should come up relatively quick, but if it's due to unpaid debts or a bankruptcy or something, you may have more trouble. Good luck.

Mostly agree with this, I would try finding and calling reconsideration lines for the cards you already applied for to see if they can approve you before anything else though and I don't think having already applied for 3 credit cards matters. A secured card or being added as an authorized user are also good ways to start building credit, and definitely check your credit reports to see if there is anything that shouldn't be on there dragging your score down.

Hard pulls are not a big deal. Their affect on your overall credit score is very small and temporary. When you have 8 or so you may start running into issues getting approved for credit cards regardless of your credit score, but before that they really don't matter much.

I'm working on building credit for the first time. At the moment I have zero credit history and a very low 300 dollar limit on a capital one unsecured no-rewards card with its first due date around the end of the month. I went on vacation and used the card an awful lot, maxing it then paying it the next few days from my bank account. Does that sort of behavior help me with Capital One in terms of getting a higher credit limit or upgrading cards? I'd eventually like to transition to the Capitol One Quicksilver Visa Platinum (ie no annual fee but actually rewards my purchases). Right now I have other purchases coming up and I'm trying to decide between early paying the capital one card (to free up credit line) and making purchases on it, or just using the debit card.

You gain nothing by paying down the credit card early just to rack up the same value of charges again, so it's functionally the same thing I think.

Canadian citizen, but soon to be American green card holder. I have good credit in Canada and nothing in the US. I was wondering what the fastest way to build credit in the US would be? I should be able to get an American CC when I move there since I guess they can transfer my Canadian card to an American one. Would it be better to get multiple US credit cards or should I just get one? I normally don't carry a balance and I pay off in full.

Went from the offer being a $500 fully secured card to a $4800 limit unsecured card, which I accepted. I only opened my other cards more recently since this looks more like it might be a long-term/permanent move instead of the temporary one I originally expected. As long as you have one Visa/MC you've got your needs met. Getting more cards should be done for rewards or to quickly build credit if you think you're going to be buying a house in a few years or something.

So get multiple credit cards it looks like for me... and maybe cancel all of them but one 6 months before the mortgage I guess? I am currently a secondary card holder on my wifes BoA CC but they didn't take my SSN since I don't have one so I'm not sure if that will even count. I am just trying to get a good credit so we can secure a decent mortgage during that time. I will probably churn once the mortgage is secured.
