A friend of mine who was a deputy has a GREAT story about this. I will attempt to recreate it as best I can

When he was 15 and in high school, his civics class had to do mock trials, which for those who may not know, are when teachers have students act as agents of the US justice system, be they lawyers, judges, defendants, police or jury members, They give them a case to present, each side has to follow the rules of the judicial system and the jury has to make a verdict that the judge must deliver and ensure that it is within the restraints of the US constitution and it's laws. Very educational poo poo, honestly.

My buddy, Gary, was the police officer who in this trial had to give testimony on behalf of the prosecution, who were pressing charges against the defendant for cocaine use and distribution. So his team, which was a few other kids playing lawyer and DA go home and make visual aides for the trial to show the jury because they wanted a good grade. So Gary gets stuck with making the coke to present as evidence. He mixes some baking soda, confection sugar and salt in a ziploc baggy and puts it in his backpack. He then places his backpack under his bed. Its a 3 day weekend so that following monday he goes out to hang out with friends while his mom is home with one of his aunts and they see an episode of Sally Jessy Raphael about kids on drugs and decide to toss their kids' rooms.

In his room, his mom and aunt find his backpack and open it to see a baggy of white powder. They then test it on their gums, WITH ZERO EXPERIENCE WITH COCAINE and decide thanks to the tingly freshness of the baking soda and the sweetness of the sugar that this must truly be the mana which fuels Charlie Sheen, Robert Downy Jr. and the entire porno industry. They wait for Gary to come home, staked out by the front door. Gary arrives home, unaware of anything.

Right through the door his aunt punches him right in the loving jaw and ,with his aunt starts, screaming at him.

"HOW DARE YOU BRING THIS IN TO MY HOME!"

"ARE YOU DEALING!?"

"YOUR LITTLE SISTERS LOOK UP TO YOU!"

etc etc

Gary is on the ground, dazed by a sucker punch and having no wherewithal to defend himself against accusations he wasn't the least bit ready for. Finally he sees his mother throwing the baggy on the counter and shouting before he realizes what has just happened. He desperately tries to explain to these two upper-middle-class irate black women all hopped up on daytime shock tv and white zinfandel. He has no success and they are getting more and more enraged at his perceived weak excuses. He finally gets his mom to call the Civics teacher to confirm his story. Luckily his civics teacher is home and calmly explains the situation to his mother, who has now become deeply embarrassed at her outright assault on her son. Gary is now breathing easy as his mom thanks the teacher and hangs up. His mother apologized to him from the bottom of her heart, but then his aunt piped up and ruined the moment

"We still found those naked lady magazines in his closet."

If you cannot tell the difference between this:

and an 18 year old, I worry about you.

How did this guy meet with his lawyers, sit on this for a long time, and think "I thought the 12 year old was 18" was a good defense?

Ah that one. Ok, so he was dispatched to a person with a gun at the park, arrived at the park & saw a person with a gun and shot him.

I really don't give a poo poo how old he thought the person was as it isn't really relevant, he spent about 2 loving seconds looking at the kid before shooting & probably only saw the gun.

What he should have done was surround and contain the kid since there was no one in the immediate area, and try to contact him from a distance and for a bit longer than 2 loving seconds. Im way more outraged at his claims that he was responding to "an active shooter situation" than anyone misjudging the age of a person they believed to be a threat.

Yeah yeah yeah. I don't want to get into a debate about the shooting. My question is why would he say he thought a 12 year old was 18? Wouldn't that kill his credibility as an officer, which in turn would make it a lot harder for people to be on his side?

I get the feeling that he's just trying to say he didn't realize it was a 12yo right away. Watch the video, they pull up & he gets out and shoots like, immediately. It's hard to know the age of a person in that short a time span I guess.

Yeah he pulled up and went slapstick action movie on it. If it wasn't a tragedy it would be something out of Paul Blart Mall Cop. I just have trouble believing that he thought Tamir Rice was 18. It isn't like he first spotted him just as he was barrel rolling out of the car.

It's a horrible strategy on his part to say something like that in my opinion. That's all I'm getting at.

If only cops with a JD could summarily decide and issue punishment on offenses. Filling out my law school app now.

Funny thing is most of us would probably issue less punishment and less severe sentences than the court does half the time.

I guess I should clarify for certain charges. People would be surprised how lenient cops would probably be in a lot of cases.

Not for other cases, like the oh you beat the poo poo out of your wife to the point of being in the ICU but we'll give you a deferred finding misdemeanor expunged after a year with no jail or fines because it's your first domestic charge... Nuh uh!
