if i was guaranteed a five hundred square foot studio apartment i would probably work enough to buy food and have ainternet connection adn a computer so i could read things and listen to music and not do anything else because i dont need a car or a vacation or jewlery or shiny clothes

personally i have a mental illness so that probably has something to do with me not having ambitions, but i find reading and listening to music and hanging out with friends more rewarding than creating value for some other guy

Let's say your highest calling in life is to listen to music and talk to friends. Wouldn't it be nice to have a job, something you like, to make enough extra money to travel and see your favourite band play a concert somewhere? Or to go on a road trip with your friends? Or, you could do some volunteer work and help people. Or you could learn a musical instrument and make some kind of a career out of that, if you're passionate about music -- if you don't risk homelessness or starvation, there's no giant risk if it turns out you can't make money at it anyway. Why just simply give up on productivity entirely?

The unambitious not working is good because we don't need to keep everyone working anymore. It would remove some pressure. Honestly, if I had mincome, I'd stop working to try writing fulltime. It's always been my dream. I believe you'd see a lot of people stop working at jobs they hate to chase their dreams.

Yeah, a friend of mine had a place to live basically paid for, and he was getting disability from a back injury (after WCB tried to gently caress him around, of course) and he basically said "I want to get my loving surgery, and get back to work instead of sitting around collecting government cheques." When I have long dead times between contracts, it drives me mad. I start working on my own projects just to have something to do.

If we had mincome I'd definitely never step foot in my cubicle again. I can think of a ton of other things I'd like to try that currently would be stupid to do in our wonderful race to the bottom in both income and job security and if they didn't work out yes I'd opt to stay home and play games rather than going back to some bullshit office tower full of cubes.

Above a certain point, once they're comfortable and don't need to worry about bills other scientifically trained professionals tend to keep doing what they were doing - studying, researching, and being driven by their curiousity. Granted, that probably doesn't include sitting in a cube writing yet another report on new and improved ways to poison Indian peasants. For every J.K. Rowling who can abuse welfare by sitting at home on her arse writing for two years there's probably a bunch who would only want to improve their lot to the extent they can afford two monitors so they can run World of Warcraft and porn simultaneously. Whatever. I suspect there's a lot of creativity buried at the moment but it might take some time to manifest itself once everyone gets bored leveling yet another night elf.
