Well Putin reasoning is based on the Russian superpower of putting up with massive amounts of misery.

Russian thinking can be described by Zizek joke about Slovenians, "A genie appears to a poor farmer and tells the farmer he will get one wish. However
anything he wishes such as wealth or power will be given to his neighbor twice as much. The farmer then asks the genie to take away sight from one of his eyes"

Just like the bitter farmer putin doesn't care if russians suffer as long as he gets the chance to make people in other countries suffer some as well.

Russia’s long-haul truck drivers have disrupted the country’s federal highways for more than two weeks to protest a new road tax (platon in Russian) collected (with a 20% commission) by the Putin-associated Rotenberg oligarchs. The protesters threatened a full blockade of Moscow today unless their demands for a radical restructuring of the government are met. Russia’s riot and traffic police have not been able to halt the convoys, and the Russian government has refused good-faith talks. Putin’s propaganda machine cannot brand three million ordinary citizens as traitors and CIA agents. It can only saturate the news with the “outrage” of Turkey shooting down its fighter jet. The Kremlin is threatened with its own version of a nationwide Maidan.

Considering Russia gave Egypt 25 bil loan for 3% interest, and average interest for citizens of Russia is ~20%, per year, I agree.

They kidnapped lots of nazi scientists as well, which helped jump start their space program.

It's actually really interesting read up on why the Soviets lost the space race.

The Russian system worked well in the beginning when you had the right people running the program like a dictator but
with worse leadership complete control pretty much tanked the program. By comparison NASA got stronger and stronger
over time plus did a better job at keeping the political aspect of the space race aligned to their long term goals.

There was an interview of some of the truckers in a Finnish paper. They called the taxes 'Rotenberg taxes' after https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arkady_Rotenberg and they believed that Putin and Medvedev didn't know what was really happening because someone was lying to them, because otherwise he would help them. Putin is literally the Tsar in the minds of the Russian commoners.

They (correctly) think that as long as you display 100% loyalty to the regime and don't slight the president in any way, you have a small chance of being heard, instead of crushed with shocking cruelty.
